The PC Building Thread

To be honest I'd seriously consider ordering the build bsmaff just posted. Some cracking prices there (particularly the CPU and HDD) and that build will serve you well. :TU:

The PSU at 730W is probably overkill but the price is very good. A PSU in the 550-650W bracket will more than suffice.

Also consider you need an operating system. Windows 7 OEM is around £70 or you could get the free trial of Windows 8 and buy the license when it runs out. You may also need a wireless adapter if you can't hook the PC straight into the router. The one I've got only cost about a tenner though.

The PSU was abit over the top but it was cheaper than the 650W one so I thought why not.

Yes, when are you planning on ordering?

Still doing some research but it will be before PES13 comes out.
I take it the build you recomend will be ok for PES14 and the fox engine??

Also its easy to put a patch on PES right? please tell me so!!
thanks

The PC will easily run PES14.
And not sure how easy PES is to patch but sure it is pretty straight forward, no game is difficult to mod.
FIFA 12 is really easy to mod, so PES cant be much different.

That system bsmaff built looks great, wish I could afford it - I'd order one now if I could!

Sure did. Just amazing. Can't recommend them enough. Although I'm sure my i5 and 8gb ram must help too when using the computer on a daily basis!

I've installed Windows 8 on my MacBook Pro to see if it will run the PES 2013 demo!

Will post results in here tomorrow night when I test it.

Well I caved and tried it tonight... It runs PES 2013 demo perfectly fine!

I've got a BenQ XL2420T monitor arriving today, heard so many good comments about it and the 120hz is supposed to make fast gameplay smoother still.

Just waiting for Nvidia 3D Vision 2 to drop in price or turn up second hand somewhere.

Okay so everyone is going to laugh their tits off at my post, but here goes with a really, really noob'ish, silly question as I know nothing about PC's at all ....

Basically, when you play a game with ramped up graphics on a PC, say, on ultra settings, can you only really see the added detail in the graphics when playing on a monitor with a crazy resolution?

I'm planning on learning how to build a PC but am worried that I may be wasting my money if I build, say, a PC that could comfortably run Battlefield 3 on ultra settings but then miss out on half of the benefits because I was playing it on my 40" 1080p TV rather than some crazy monitor with a resultion far in excess of that. What I'm asking is whether a 1080p TV might not be able to show half the added detail, or at the very least look a lot worse than if you were playing the exact same game, with the same settings, on a dedicated monitor with a far higher resolution count. Hope that makes sense.

Probably a ludicrous question I know, but I know NOTHING about PCs at all when dealing with anything under the hood.

Anyways I'm toying with the idea of building a PC that would be in excess of the next gen consoles coming out, something I could just build and keep for a good length of time, and something that could play the likes of Battlefield 3 and Crysis 3 on top, ultra settings, provided I don't venture into crazy territory regarding costs.

On top of the question I asked, another thing holding me back from getting a PC though is the multiplayer side of things. Even if I get a PC I want to use my xbox 360 controller, as I absolutely detest using a keyboard and mouse to play games with. Yes, it's faster, yes, it's more accurate, but I HATE using it. I want to lounge in my living room, control pad in hand, and use my PC on my TV. But the problem is that, using a controller rather than keyboard and mouse for online games, I'll get absolutely slaughtered by the vast majority who do use keyboard controls. It's a major stumbling block to my buying a PC to be honest.

It is a silly question, everybody knows that the bigger the TV the better, if you have a 40" TV the only way a monitor could be better is if it was 50" YEEHAA!

The bigger the better, it's a rule that works out all throughout life....except if you are a Jockey....or a contortionist....or Bobby Ball....

You can buy a 360 controller for the PC - I dont think anyone uses the keyboard!

Yeah but doesn't a monitor with a far higher resolution, by definition, is able to display a lot more information? Sure a large TV is bigger, but that doesn't always necessarily mean more information is being displayed. I mean people used to have 40" TVs a few years ago that couldn't display HD.

Besides, some people I'm sure buy gaming monitors that are absolutely massive. I'm not sure if using a TV will take advantage of the ultra high resolution graphics PCs can provide these days. TVs only go up to 1080p, whereas I thought monitors could display far higher than this? Might be wrong, but is worth asking before deciding on whether to build a PC or not.

Ah, that sounds good, some mates of mine claimed that people playing online shooters etc still used gaming mice and keyboards because they're ultra fast to aim with. I thought playing against such people with a joypad would see me at a much bigger disadvantage...

Bigger is always better, Same goes for building your own pc, I would get a room your house and just fill the whole thing up like the computers in the 70s/80s, have a whole room and a computer you can only play 'Pong' on! and the biggest TV you can find....that is the way to do it.

Ok, a few things to consider:

- The size of the TV doesn't matter if its resolution is 1080p i.e. 1920x1080 pixels. The same number of pixels is displayed regardless of whether it is a 32" LCD or a 60" Plasma. If you sit close to the TV, bigger displays are pointless.

- 1920x1080 (1080p) is the most common resolution used by PC users.

- You can buy monitors that display higher resolutions, for instance 1920x1200 and 2560x1440 are more common. But, the higher the resolution, the more pixels the PC has to render so it is more demanding on the graphics card.

- The benefit of a higher than 1920x1080 resolution is a sharper image that requires little or no anti-aliasing (jaggie reduction). AA can be demanding on the graphics card too (depending on how smooth you want the image to look) so it's a trade off between the two.

- Most console games don't run at 1920x1080 so running at this resolution at a smooth 60fps is a huge upgrade on console graphics by itself.

So, what I'm trying to say is, if you have a decent 1080p TV then it will be perfectly fine. It's what a lot of PC gamers use (me included) rather than dedicated monitors. BF3 at ultra @ 1080p will look stunning, far beyond the 360 version. It is, however, one of the most intensive PC games out there at the moment so you will need at least a mid-range graphics card like a AMD Radeon HD7850 or a Nvidia GTX 560Ti, or an older high-end card. Depends on your budget really.

Regarding 360 controllers.... get one of these and it's just the same as playing on the 360:

I'm assuming that if I can run the PES 2013 demo on my MacBook fine then the PES 2013 full game should also run fine...?

If you want to play online games and don't want to convert to using mouse and keyboard you will get your arse absolutly handed to you.

Also there isn't many graphics cards out there which will let you play BF3 at 1080p on ultra settings.

And Jamezinho is right consoles don't run hardly any games at 1080p or even 720p, they use lower resolutions to keep the frame rate up.

PES definitely moves smoother and seems to play better on the PC with a PS3 Pad. A mate of mine has done that for the past few PES's on PC. I use a 360 pad for the PES Demo.
