The PC Building Thread

Seems to be running OK now, I think it's a lose PSU connection inside (I hope, havent tried in my room yet)

Isn't it just because it was overclocked?

Now running on defaults you would expect I to behave

Give me a shout tomorrow evening if you still got probs

Just re-formatting some old HDDs on it.

I hope it was a dodgy PSU. Bringing it back to my room tomorrow and will see what happens...

So I moved my Games for Windows Live from my SSD to my HDD. And Windows had a short cut placed in the Games folder by default where the pre-installed Microsoft games are. But when I went to load the program from there, I got the Windows can't open this file thing. Like a prick, I accidently selected a program so everything opend Games for Windows Live.

I fixed it thought, but the only problem I have no is on the "Search for programs and files", Games for Windows Live does not have an icon, yet it does on the desktop and in the folder it was installed. Maybe a uninstall/re-install could fix it?

EDIT: Got it fixed again. Now is there a way to add and delete short cuts in the default Games folder where all the games are like Solitaire? The Game for Windows Live one in there doesn't work as I moved its location.

I am thinking the same as Jamez that the problem seems to be it has been overclocked.

The best thing to do is remove the CMOS battery for a couple of minuter and plug it back in.
But the problem with this is if he has installed Windows using a different BIOS configuration the computer could blue screen.

Where bouts in the country are you from Kevano?

I'm in the North West (skem(, but I travel to Alderley and Leeds on a daily/weekendly basis too.

I just can't fathom how it's working properly in one room and then I move it to another room and it wont work.

I made sure I left it on in the other room, rebooted about 5 times to make sure all was working.

Even plugged in my other two sata drives and formatted one of them.

is everything exactly the same.

power cable, the usb's and other devices plugged in exactly the same ports?

i would deffo do as suggested above and reset your bios to defaults and go from there.

Yep nothings changed.

If I do that, I don't want to risk blue screening windows, as I'm buggered then arent I?

I will try it tonight.

Fyi I got home today unplugged everything out of mobo plugged all back in...worked first time in my room...leaving updates running now but fingers it's fixed

Old HDD in, all set up in my room and typing on it as we speak.

WOW it's FAST!

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll keep my eye on the heat levels and see if I need some fans

Glad you're in business.

Yeah, download some system monitoring software such as CPUID Hardware Monitor or System Information for Windows (SIW). Always good to keep an eye on things.

Like I said grab a couple of fans to keep your system nice and cool. They cost peanuts, are easy to fit and the power draw is negligible.

Will do.

Man alive now I have another problem.

"COM Surrogate has stopped working" when I try and open a photo. Apparently a common win 7 bug on 64 bit and is something to do with thumbnails...

Any ideas? Google doesnt offer many suggestions other than re-format..

Edit, updated gfx driver and seems ok now..

You should try crystal diskmark with the setting above and see if you get the real advertised speeds? :)

Better late than never...

Woops! Now I'm glad Ebuyer didn't post my bad review and that I didn't go through the hassle of sending it back. Thanks for the info.

No worries, still undecided what to do or which drive to keep, I did some tests on bootup and shutdown on both drives and unfortunately they were identical 41 seconds from choosing which drive to boot to the last item loaded in windows, 3 times with each drive and 41 seconds every time!

PC's are a fucking nightmare sometimes. Always something needs updating.

Tell me about it.

The speed at which this computer runs though makes life a breeze.

Everything seems to work flawlessly now.

It even made the PES13 demo play good! ;)

is it possible to build a pc for £200 that would play fm2012 with english league only and play movies. hes got a hdd and dvd/rw he wants to take from an old pc any help appreciated.

I don't think you can build one new for as little as £200. You need a CPU, Motherboard, PSU and case, so even sourcing the cheapest components would push you over budget. Do you have a copy of Windows as well?

Best bet is either pick up a second hand system or buy second hand components. If it's just for FM then the pc doesn't have to be very powerful. I don't think you even need a graphics card for that game (or do you?).

without a monitor, keyboard and OS its easily doable for playing fm2012.

i spent just shy over that on a linux server that could easily play fm2012(4gb dual core intel sandy bridge, and a case).

How many components do you already have?
If you just need new mobo, cpu and ram it is possible.

Get yourself an Intel Quad Core 9550.

Apologies if I'm asking this in the wrong thread but it's kinda along the same lines.
A desktop PC is out of the question at home so I am looking to get a new laptop. I want to get a good gaming system with a view to running games like PES and BF3 via HDMI onto my HD TV but I'm unsure what kinda spec to be looking at.
Ideally I don't want to be spending more than £500

What should I be looking at Processor wise (should I be looking at dual or quad core?), RAM (I'm thinking 8gb), graphics card etc to play these kind of games?

At the moment I'm looking at:

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5755G_1204252.html

1. Is the graphics card good enough on this laptop or should I be looking at 2gb?
2. Only dual core! Is this enough?

Hope you guys can help
