The PC Building Thread

The fan speed is controlled by the BIOS so would spin slower or faster depending on CPU temp.
If your like me though it is easy to configure the fan % in the bios, as because my fan is silent I have the fan blowing 100% when the cpu reaches 45c rather than 60c.

Where abouts in the BIOS is this? Im not experienced with this atall so I don't want to screw things up.

My case has the option to turn the fan speed on high, the only time it starts to get warm, well, warm air coming out from one of the holes on the top of the case is when I'm playing on Dolphin (GameCube Emulator). And its only on the front hole nearer to the front of the case. The back hole is just standard. But thats surley a good sign that air is escaping correct.

New PC should be here Thursday.

My PC decided today that it won't switch on.

I left it on over night but it was too loud, so tried to turn it off. It rebooted like 3 times then turned off.

This morning I can't turn it on. I've took it apart, cleaned it and can't see any problems.

Also tested the PSU lead and the fuse hasn't blown.

Could the PSU be dead?

Has anyone come across any good sites/tips for getting their RAM running at correct clock speeds? I have the Asus M5A97 motherboard and my RAM is 8GB G.Skill DDR3 1866MHz but by default it's only running at 1600MHz so need to do some tweaking to get it running at stock speed, not adverse to overclocking my whole system but want to test it all for stability before doing so :)

You can't run at stock speeds if the rest of the system is not in sync with the ram speed. You will need to over clock your whole system to get it running in that stock speed. If you have a i5 or i7 of some sort, it is a easy to oc.

What psu is it?

Yeah that's what I was thinking, and no I'm AMD all the way :)

Great thanks, will do!

Software query: I'd like Windows 7, MS Office 2010 or above inc outlook, a newer version of Paintshop Pro or equivalent and also a program for newsgroups.

I have all of these now, and they were free.

Is it still possible to get them free this day and age?

I can send you the info of someone in selling Office 2010 Professional Plus keys for $8.50, they're legit and working I have one on my PC and just bought a second for my wife's laptop :)

This sounds good, if my first option doesn't work out I may take you up on this. Thanks.

Roger that, I have some Amazon vouchers I'll use up and pick some up, thanks.

I think I'll leave Overclocking for now.

It should be arriving tomorrow :).

With regards to these fans, should I buy the one you showed me or do I need to measure up on the new system to make sure they fit?

Submitted my support query to Kingston, they asked for an ATTO benchmark which isn't good because that actually shows speeds similar to the published specs, it's all other benchmark apps and any real world tests that show the Kingston failing to perform.

I tried to think of some real world tests to compare the two SSD's, not sure if this could be considered a constructive test or not, but anyways I tried the following:

10gb MKV, moved it from a standard HDD to the SSD, then copied it from one folder on the SSD to another folder on the same SSD, the Kingston averaged 58Mb/s the OCZ averaged 130Mb/s.

So I got a reply from Kingston:

AS SSD is not suitable to benchmark a drive which uses data compression such as the SVP200 (and all SandForce drives).

The ATTO benchmark shows some good write and read speeds, even better than the Vertex 4.

Concerning the CrystalDisk Mark, you need first to use the following option as shown below in the screenshot before to run the test.

The changed configuration is:

crystaldiskmarkall0fill.gif

And now when I run the bechmark on my Kingston it shows this:

So obviously the drive is fine as they're good benchmark scores.

I ran the same 0 fill test on my OCZ and the results are:

oczall0fill.png

So seems the drive is fine it's just flawed end user testing on our part!

So now what do I do? Keep two SSDs? Is there any benefit to doing a raid with two different types of SSD?

OK got it today and opened it up to see what it looks like inside. Looks good but there are loads of cables!

I want to plug in my two other HDD's from my old computer...is it just a case of connecting the cables in the right holes?!

I have the same SSD and get similarly slow speeds unfortunately. I posted an unfavourable review of it on Ebuyer, oddly enough they decided to stick with all the 5 star reviews instead.

You should try crystal diskmark with the setting above and see if you get the real advertised speeds? :)

Yeah, you want a SATA cable from each to the motherboard and a power connector in each from the PSU.

thanks.

So my old PC died after switching itself on, then off after afew seconds...it did this often before it died.

My new pc is doing exactly the same....HELP - ive tried 3 different sockets in 3 different rooms...

If anyone is on MSN or skype and can help, please pm me asap

Yeah that's what it was doing. Have tried in another room and seems ok at moment but it's saying the overclock failed. I am in the bios system doing a memory test and it's stopped on 13% wtf

Ah right, did the PC come pre-overclocked?

You're probably best going into the bios and loading the default settings and go from there. I you do this make sure the hard drive mode is on AHCI for the SSD.

My PC was boot cycling after I put it together but it would start after two resets. It was a memory profile causing the problem I believe. It didn't like turbo mode so I knocked it back to normal and it was fine.

No I can't do anything, it just boots up and then about 2-3 seconds in shuts down.

Then it tries again. So i unplug it coz I dont want it to keep trying.

unplugged psu from inside and put it back in and it's loaded again with that overclock thing failed.

Have set to defaults saved and rebooted and its working for nwo

Look up how to clear the CMOS on your motherboard (or check the manual if you've got one). If you get a situation where it won't boot at all then it's worth clearing the CMOS as it resets the defaults with the PC switched off.
