The Movies Thread

I also watched the hangover this weekend and thought it was utterly boring. I didn't have any laugh with it, gags are primitive and gross and in my oppinion it's a bad mix-copy of "Very bad things" and "Bachelor party" without any of the good things of both movies.

There are definitely some good idea but for me they were totally ruined by specially poor dialogues and jokes about sex. The oriental guy was abysmal by the way.

Overall I would give it a 4.0/10, below zombieland.

Why was the oriental guy abysmal?

Most of the stuff he says is quote worthy and they way he says it is very funny

I was crying with laughter at some points in the Hangover. I loved it.

I agree though, the oriental guy was a bit shit in the film. But the scene where you first see him is very funny ;)) IMO

Horses for courses guys, we all like different things. :D

Bruno 4/10
Placebo's post just reminded me that I watched Bruno last week but I thought it was pretty crap to be honest (further highlighting my point above ;))). It wasn't a patch on Borat and some of the 'acting' by the 'public' was beyond crap and what they were saying was clearly not real and was just silly which ruined it for me (the bit where the mum says she'd give her toddler lipo for the photoshoot is one example). Some bits were funny but I just felt let down big style.

Speaking of the hangover, I couldn't stop laughing when he pushed the Chicken away. There was just something about it that made me find it stupidly funny. :D

I know I will probably be in the minority here, I'm very very picky with films (and studied filmmaking when I was young, at the same time I studied programming even if it sounds weird to most people, my parents included).

I found that the first apparition of the chinese had some fun element (only the first 2 seconds when he "jumps" out) but later on his role is absurd and the performance so overacted... Plus, all his plot doesn't make any sense:

Getting the "wrong" Doug is just a pathetic twist in the script you could see coming from miles away. Plus, how does the chinese find the "wrong" Doug in some hours when there's nothing pointing at him? It's just nonsense.

Other secondary characters are horrible, specially the "ugly" girlfriend of one of the friends. All the jokes about sperm and sex were primitive.

There are other holes and too simple things in the story that I couldn't bear:
The "right" doug is in the terrace and can throw a bed away but can't shout out loud to be found? He's 36 hours there and does nothing to escape? I just don't buy it.

The whole scene with police officers playing with tasser guns in front of the childs is horrible. The way they convince them of letting them free was truly uninspired.

The way the "stripper" falls in love with the dentist; I mean, I didn't believe anything of all that crap. I know it's a comedy, but when a comedy totally loosses bonds with reality then, to me, it's just like watching clowns jumping and shouting for no reason. I had no empathy for any of them, and the way the stripper acts when they meet her and she recovers the baby is very poor as well as her lines in the script. Come on, there's no punch anywhere!

Even though I didn't like it so much, "Very bad things" is far better for me. All in all, it all comes down to oppinions, as always, and I watched the film because one of my workmates told me it was so great, and it's the oppinion of many people from what I suspect.

I thought The Hangover wasn't that great either but my expectations were huge on this, thanks to most of you guys
also when I saw it was from the same director of Old School, one of my favorite movies, I thought The Hangover would be equally funny and it wasn't.
Pretty good but not Old School level

Avatar 2d 6/10

I have no idea how this film is up for 9 Oscar nominations where as films like Inglorious Basterds or District 9 aren't even getting half the nominations.

I wasn't a fan of Avatar either

People seem to be grabbed by the visuals and not the story with is poor imo

I also thought Avatar was nothing really new. Many elements seemed to just come from older Sci-Fi films. For example Sigourney Weaver was almost the same kind of character as in Aliens.

Avatar / the Last Samurai / Dances With Wolves / A Man Called Horse / ?

there's a great scene in 'A Man Called Horse' where the indians skewer the paleface, John Morgan, with eagle-talon hooks in the chest. he is then hung via these hooks and twirled for several minutes, as an initiation rite. graphically nice for a 70's movie. :)
