The Movies Thread

I now have a job in a cinema :).

Get to watch any film for free and take a guest, free film posters once they've been taken down, and there's just been an IMAX screen opened which I can also get in to for free.

Anyone been to an IMAX before? I had a training day where some guy flew over from Canada to show us a presentation about it, in which it was made to sound like as big a jump ahead as the difference between VHS and DVD :P, it was basically to teach us hyperbole salesman talk I think though.

Think I might go and watch Hunger Games on Friday - not read the books and don't even know what it's about but I've heard it has similarities to Battle Royale, and I enjoyed that film a lot.

I've recently read the first Hunger Games book and really enjoyed it, got high hopes for the film.

I used to work in a cinema while at university, great times. I could have 4 free tickets a day back then and watch any film. Also they had a screening just for workers late at night a couple of days before the films came out (If they were good films).

I used to give my free tickets to friends all of the time while I was working etc and we also had about 15% off of the food etc.

Because it was in Edinburgh we were a huge part of the film festival there and I used to work in the private bar and served lots of famous people a highlight was Heather Graham :)) she was lovely Jubly!
Yeah that's pretty much the same as I get - 20% off concessions and we have the early staff showings, although we can't talk about the films to anyone until the actual release date.
I can't get the tickets and give them away though, I have to be present for a guest to be allowed a ticket.

I was never really a massive filmgoer, but I might as well now I suppose it's free :P.

You ever seen Battle Royale Dags?

A LONG time ago. I remember really enjoying it, I've not read the book though and that's supposed to be even better. I should get around to watching it again.

Hunger Games is similar to Battle Royale in a way, not as gruesome. Some similarities to Twilight and Running Man too, I guess.

Moneyball - 9/10

Love Baseball so knew the story, read the book etc and the film was awesome. Loved the way they mixed live action in with the actors and the whole thing was well done. Couldnt really do too much 'cheese' in the action sequences due to the real nature of it.

Shame Paul DePodesta wasnt in it as the 'Peter Brand' character, bit odd. But other than that, highly recommend it, even if you not a fan of Baseball (not a lot of action in it).

Harry Brown - 6/10

Not a big Caine fan and this was just a depressing mess of a film. Hate films with over the top bad language in and it just stood out like a sore thumb.

The Hunger Games IMAX - 7/10 - Bit slow to get going and was a little cheesy/chick-flicky at times, but I still enjoyed it.

IMAX didn't really enhance this film greatly, but some of the trailers looked immense - that part of the MIB3 trailer where he jumps off the building literally made me flinch it looked that real! Takes up your whole field of view and the picture quality was superb, the sound system is pretty damn good too.

The Dark Knight Rises should be great on the IMAX, especially considering over an hour of it was actually filmed with IMAX cameras - with most films they just film it as usual then send it to a team who upscale it but TDKR will have a lot of scenes shot in the optimum quality.

Still not sure I'd pay nearly £15 a ticket though, even the £8 for a normal ticket is a bit steep.

Its true to life though in these kind of areas

I watched Immortals last night 5/10

A few good action scenes but the film just looked fake throughout and the story was the same old same old

Yea I know, which is why I found it so depressing. Would hate to live anywhere like that.

The Social Network (BD) 8/10

Finally watched this, good film.

Just watched Tintin The Movie, thought it was superb. Although I am bias, I used to love the books they had. Brought back plenty a memory.

Toy Story 3 (BD) 6/10

Disappointing, in general this series is overrated. The Incredibles is superior in every possible way.

Got round to Drive at last.

Not bad - wasnt what i was expecting, but had it moments. Shame they tried to make it too arty and the story could have been done and dusted in 10 mins if it wasnt for the long silences and awkwards stares.

Ah well, 7/10.

Inception - 8/10 (BD)

This one is hard to rate as it clearly deserves a 10/10, because it is simply stunning from the idea over the whole story till the end, one of the best films I ever saw.

BUT: I wouldn't call it my favourite and that is why I has to rate it that "low" behind other screenplays I mentioned in this thread earlier. I rated F&F 5 and Vantage Point both higher, but you cannot compare these films in any aspect, Inception really isn't worse than these two, it is "different". Inception is intellectually by far the most challenging film I ever witnessed, but as long as there are other films with more (imo) interesting aspect I sadly cannot give a high rating.

And btw, (Caution, spoiling the end right now)

anyone noticed it doesn't have a happy ending?

The Next Three Days (BD) - 7/10

Decent film but definitely too long.

What I thought aswell. Didn't think it was good at all tbh (5/10), and seems to be getting good reviews based solely on the fact they have slowed down the dialog by 50% to create some arty atmosphere and added some Tarantino esque violence.

Mission Impossible 4 (IMAX) - 7/10
Amusing fluff action movie with the Dubai bit with IMAX being really good.

J Edgar - ?/10
Not sure about this, was hoping it would get interesting, but with 30min. to go (having watched 120min) I fell asleep. Can't be bothered to watch the rest atm, anyone else seen this and knows if it gets somewhat better?

it's disappointing and boring ..

American Pie: The Reunion: 7.5/10

Nice funny flick to go see with mates, like I did. :)
I have watched the first American Pie a dozen times, so all the re-marks from that movie were quite funny to see.:)

Avengers

By far, the best Marvel movie: fun, great action and it made major efforts to be faithful to the comics and that was not easy.
Also, the 3D was pretty good.

9/10

The Fighter (BD) - 8/10

Excellent film.
