The Movies Thread

Watched 'The Fog of War' last night, it's a documentary about Robert McNamura (General secretary) and focuses on America's involvement in the Vietnam war. I found it very intriguing, if you're interested in war then it'd recommend it.

Drive - 8/10

Really well done, although a little too slow at times. Very stylish and some great tension and great moments.

Watched it years ago and I remember advicing it to people here as well! It's one of those works everyone should see to understand how things work in high politics. McNamara may seem a good lad, but his actions meant death for thousands of people. Great documentary that shows the controversy on ruling and taking decisions at that level.

Though docs like "An inside job", "The corporation" and "Client number 9" are much more popular, this one is much better in my oppinion, mainly because it's the main actor who speaks.

I wanted an easy-viewing film so I watched The Change Up with Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds this weekend.

WTF - this film made me laugh out loud on my own on a Saturday night. Nice cameo by Olivia Wilde too (nips). I like this kind of in-your-face humour.7/10.

Last week I watched the following:

Contagion: 6/10 - meh. Not much character development (too many characters) and lacking depth. Too much going on. It should be more like "Blindeness" with Julianne Moore.

Beginners: 8/10 - loved it. Very moving film that depicts human sadness with strong acting and interesting story.

Moneyball: 8/10 - enjoyed it and Pitt was great. Wish there was more game scenes and a bit more science in it though.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - 9/10 - Brilliant film. Good acting, great story and very nice art direction.

Lakeview Terrace - 5/10 (TV-SD)

Average to me. Found it too linear all the time and with way too less characters it wasn't so hard to figure out the end.

So how do people like MoneyBall? I haven't seen it but want to and have heard very good things. I see Mila rates it as 8/10. Anyone else?

I love Sports Movies but the fact that this is about Baseball (Pretty much the only sport I DONT care for) makes me less excited but it's not so much about on the pitch stuff as off of it and decisions made based on statistics etc from what I understand anyway, so I still wanna see it.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo = 8/10

For once, Hollywood gets a remake correct.

A suitable tribute to the cracking Swedish original.

I knew the twists and turns along the way so it didn't shock but if you haven't seen the original, it more than matches and would justify a 9/10 from me if it was my first viewing.

District 9 - 8/10 (TV-SD)

Good movie, entertained me very well for two hours, although the movie has its lengths until the second half begins, when it gets faster every minute.

Bad Teacher (BD) - I'm glad I didn't pay for this, awful.

Agreed. I watched The Extra Man last week and found Kevin Kline to be pretty funny in that film. He's a very good actor.

I also watched Avatar: The Last Airbender, and surprisingly really enjoyed it. No idea how it's rated far worse than garbage like Eragon or the Golden Compass.

Take Shelter 9/10

Loved the plot and Michael Shannon was brilliant. It's about a guy who starts having apocalyptic dreams, so starts building a shelter for his family... but no one knows if he's going crazy or actually predicting the future.

Warrior was my favourite film of 2011. The ending was pure perfection.

Agree with Take Shelter too, Michael Shannon was superb. Awesome film!

Saw The Descendants on Tuesday. Though it was good and while Clooney performed well, I certainly don't think he was Oscar worthy.

Also saw Chronicle last week and totally loved it - it was classic 'popcorn film' brilliance.

i thought warrior was awesome, then i found out it was fake, LOL. The entire movie i thought it was based on a real story, like the fighter, but it wasnt, hahhaaha

Source Code (BD) - 7/10

Decent film, Jeffrey Wright and Vera Farmiga were wasted in limited roles though.

Things we lost in the fire - 8/10
