Tennis Games - General Discussion

Well, not sure if the publisher has anything to do with listening to feedback and implementing fixes... But Nacon is the publisher behind Session Skate Sim (Crea-Ture is the dev), and it's BY FAR the best skateboarding sim out there: it leaves Skater XL, Tony Hawk (obviously) and this pathetic new EA skate (live-service) game just completely biting the dust. The only ones that come close are the (now classic) EA Skate games (1,2 & 3) of the 7th generation.

If Big Ant (dev behind Tiebreak) goes the same way, with a certain amount of time (patches) it can turn out to be a good sim game. One can only hope... Hell, if it's better than the latest Top Spin (2k, one of the most evil micro transaction devs out there), then it's already a win.

There are moments where a player is running across the court to chase a shot and his racket faces the direction he's running in (i.e. sideways from the gameplay camera, rotating like the hands of a clock), and then the ball moves off in the direction of the opponent as if he's smashed the ball forwards. It's nothing to do with video speed-up as far as I can see, the shots just don't match the animations (or physical possibilities) a lot of the time.

But they're making the game they want to make (i.e. more arcadey than sim) and that's fine if it's fun!
Hello Chris.
Yes there are sometimes animation issues, the developpers know that.
But yes, this game is more fun to play than watching it on Youtube.
But like my FC videos, the speed is highter since I have a PS5 pro and I don't know why.

On their discord, we spoke to the CEO, Ross, and the chief developper, Mike, to show with videos what's wrong and what is ok.
But before making a Tiebreak 2, they want to have a good base.
I have more than 500 hours on this game and I prefer Tiebreak than TopSpin 2K25

This game needs better transitions between animations, a better ball physics, more skill to make a winner, a better CPU.
It reminds me FC : with a better gameplay, with all the licences, it could becthe ultimate tennis game.
But many tweaks are needed.

Not only in gameplay aspects, but just the fact of not having an infest of micro transactions that 2k is well known for (NBA 2k is currently a CANCER), it makes Tiebreak already better than Top Spin.

As I said, one can only hope. Although I don't think FC is the best example. The default gameplay on that game is absurdly bad.

I probably should give Tennis Elbow another go, as tried it a few times and just couldn't get into it.
Personally out of everything I tried Full Ace is the best tennis game.

I have tried TopSpin and TieBreak but they are both just absolute garbage.
Agree that i can't, and i tried multiple time, to get into Tennis Elbow. Because the engine feels like a PS2 one to be gentle.

Agree that the latest Top Spin is shit as hell... Not even comparable to Top Spin 4 which is the best overall game regarding physics/animations/coherence and "All in" play, acclaimed by all critics in the world.
You can compare it in term of fun, but not "sim" with a 8 bit game with zero impact of anything else than ball trajectories (tons of players positions not fitting with the ball trajectory), but what's always kill me is that the racket who don't even touch the ball (there's almost 2 or 3 pixels, when you shoot, between the racket and the ball) and just for that it deserves a red cross normally in our super high standard.

That's unfair and nostalgia based.
You can prefers it but even if i take others games from that era, Super Tennis was also at the same level of fun but with not "more control" but "more understanding" about what you're doing. ATP tour, in another style more like like Virtua Tennis.
Please bro don't play the KickOff/Sensible pro guy, it's not because you can only push the ball to advance that it's the best feeling of football you can get on the market. To me it's more unplayable and ugly, but i understand people who like it.

Now i'm a Tennis game fan enthousiath, so i love a lot of games in all generation... Except PS1 lol.
8bits/16 bits - Tennis Ace, "Tennis" (Master system), Wimbledon 8/16 Bits version, Final match Tennis too (of course ;-) ) on the "12 bits Supergrapfx, ATP Tour, IMG Tennis... I must forgot some of them.
Then Virtua Tennis 1 was a bomb when it was out, Arcade or not it was ultra fun, the 2 was even better (you can forget the 3 and 4 lol, they didn't kept the intensity of the two others).
Well i'm done with that talk, just a last paragraph about a game that i think no one talk and it's the sequel of FMT on Snes... I don't get why that game didn't get the same treatment as Nintendo's Super Tennis :

SNES Super Final Match Tennis/Jennifer Capriati Tennis in a certain way "correct" some stuffs from his "12" bits version :: the same but perhaps less fun as it's less fast, but better graphics, better animation, ball shooted on to the middle of the racket etc. but perhaps the ball aim a bit too much often on the pitch? Possible, and input needs perhaps less reactivity? I don't know but to me it's almost the same. I don't care and enjoy it. Super Tennis too is a good rival. Well i forgot many retro games and yes, there was tons of super ugly games but Overall it was the best era regarding Number of them vs Quality.

I just brought this game as i watched both Saturator but also people with a very high level encounter together, and i took it, and if could make you give a try : it's very, very hard to master in comparison to any new Tennis games who tried before (AO even if the 2 was good but not enough, Tennis World Tour, TopSpin2k25, even harder to master to me than Tennis Elbow (Overrated too, and you will see the same issues of animations/physics on it but probably a lot more).

No shhht, It really feels like they're aiming, in the future, to continue in a path "Action-tennis", more oriented Offensive, but there's also a lot of miss. For the moment i like it, and what you've see is, by logic when you play the game, more than an animation/physics conflict due to something they didn't worked on, forgot or whatsoever. Well, i prefers when it's totally real life physics which take the decision even if the game may looks "too rigid" but with a very solid link between animations and physics, even if it can transform some behavior animations pretty weird, but it's quite hard for a first upcoming Tennis game to do it.

For example, the only boxing game available (Undisputed) have been left by the team as they're building a new one. So okay, situations looks the same, punch too, but animations and collision fits totally with physics. From what i've heard, they prepare the 2 and from different underwater source it's not just better but looks like another game as they worked really hard on it, they're super boxing fans and helped by tons of supporters, i think they could make it, at least better than a Fight Night who was a bit too Quick and Easy to master to me. I got a bit hard to come back and replay it, but in terms of immersion no other boxing game can match with. Sorry for the O.T., but we know that best.

Totally O.T. too, but i tried Grand Chelem 2 on PS3 not so long ago, and i was surprised by his level in terms of physics and logic. Now the issues is not that it's "hard to master" but that the timing, the movement changes, i mean controller in hands... Looks like the game got his own logic lol. But it's not THAT ultra bad like the 1st one i tried yearsss ago. And it's rare from an EA game, but the game feels too flat in terms of overall sensations, it's not only speed of animation, power sensations, that's global.

They have added today new sliders to tweak the service with double faults!
Ah yeah i forgot that part, first time i tried i did double fault non stop lol, i don't know if it's me or their service system who is broken lol. Well, i hate the TE4 Service system with the bar going from one side to the other like an old 8pool game or Golf... And there's plenty of those "mini games" on TE4 that's probably why i never get into TE3 before neither. It's not at all "Tennis-like" feeling to me. Just the bar like in Virtua Tennis or older game should be the only standard.
