Real Madrid Thread

I do agree with this statement, but at the same time i think forlan has always been world class, he was continually scorin at international level, he just wasnt given a real chance at united. When he did have a run, he scored goals.

Also i think the spanish league is a more attack minded league, so obviously strikers will thrive in that league.
forlan would score some sick goals then miss sitters.... he was never world class at united

What are you talking about? Forlan's a legend. The man got stuck in his own shirt during a goal celebration and then when he finally took it off, he had trouble putting it back on.

If thats not world class then what is?

Forlan benefitted both from the style of play that la Liga encapsulates, playing week in week out in a supportive enviroment and being fed balls from a potent attacking force spearheaded by a real playmaking talent called Riquelme.

Forlan never got a chance at United to shine and besides one or two screamers Forlans goals in the Spanish league were effectively tap ins.

Says a lot that Owen, Englands best striker however is unable to chalk up that kind of individual brilliance and instead relied on feeding off of scraps however.

Forlan had a dismal time at United and he got a fresh start in Spain. He wasn't a bad player.

Englands best striker
unable to chalk up that kind of individual brilliance
relied on feeding off of scraps

In relation to the negatives being thrown at Forlan. Both have played in the same leagues.

And Owen has scored consistantly in both! unlike Forlan who whatever anyone says had more than enough chances for Man Yoo!

General consensus - not my opinion (if it isn't clear I dislike overrated English footballers ;))

Forlan scored his fair share when he was given a chance at the end of the season also - and some of them were really good goals to boot.

Fact is Forlan is nobody special.

But in the eyes of many Owen is.

Yet Owen unlike Forlan has played many, many more times and still he feeds off of scraps crafted by other players - whereas Forlan at least exhibited some individual talent in grafting goals by himself.

I think they are both shit to be honest - i'm just responding to the criticism he has recieved.

Thats like saying players like Linieker or even RVN are crap because they dont score the most spectacular goals! :-s

Owen is class....sad thing was that when he played for us, all our play revolved around him - hence teams worked us out making us and him ineffective.

He think he would be amazing playing alongside Henry in Arsenal - the fox in the box Wenger always wanted. I don't understand why he hasn't bid for him - he'll be such a waste in Newcastle.

I think Arsenal signing Owen would be harsh on Reyes. Unless they did a swap but Madrid obviously dont want another striker.

I think Reyes might become a permanent left midfielder now, pushing Pires out of the team.

Here's my view:

- Owen performed superb last season in Real Madrid. He got the best "goals/minutes" ratio of La Liga. He should stay, he's gonna get a lot of chances this year, because Real Madrid needs to rotate their players so they don't get burnt when May arrives. Zidane cannot play sixty matches at top level anymore, Raul might need some rest too, and Real Madrid cannot afford losing Ronaldo for three weeks (imagine an injury) and having to face Juventus at the Champions League with Robinho and Soldado as forwards. It has happened before, and it cost Real the tournament.

Now Madrid have a well balanced team, Woody's back (why sell Samuel, though?), and both Baptista and Robinho are great players.

Zidane will keep #5 because Real Madrid has already built a brand around Zizou being #5, Becks #23, Raúl #7 and so on... You just cannot change that so easily. Plus, #10 was free, as #8 was when Baptista arrived. Robinho is going to be a great player for sure. Wether it'll take him days, weeks, months or years to get accustomed to the European gameplay is uncertain, but he will rock!

He already rocks, he's a combination of Ronaldinho's skills and Ronaldo's speed and striking power. He reminds me a lot of he young Ronaldinho that debuted five years ago in Brazil... and he's got some similarities with Butragueño also (stop-and-go moves, small, quick player...).

Yeah Robinho has got great skill, but Ronaldo speed and power i don't think so. He has good speed but not near Ronaldo. I've been watching him for 4 yrs and overall he has been very impressive, but the Brazil games allow him lots of time on the ball and is less physical. But i wish him luck.

Pavon is a clown! Okay, he made one good interception, but that hardly excuses his ineptitude elsewhere. For someone playing at this level he should know YOU DO NOT PASS WITH YOUR HEAD DOWN WHILST IN FRONT OF GOAL ENCOURAGING AN INTERCEPTION. lol. what an idiot!

The guy is a joke, his marking is pedestrian and his covering is laughable - but what makes it all the more worse is that the guy isn't humble - he comes across as arrogant.

mental note (circa 1880); NEED. A. DEFENDER. (and apparently Ramos is the man for the job as far as the media is concerned, just need to sell Owen to finance the deal).

First half it looked like old Madrid, the goal came from piss-poor defending so one can't take too much from it, but a sublime finish all the same from Ronaldo.

The important aspect surrounding the game is number one, the defense, and number two the immediate impact taking Gravesen off to bring on Robinho had.

I hope there is no danger of placing too much expectation on his shoulders (and all the rest of it) but I would very much like to see him START the next match in place of Raul (who did not carry on his previous seasons ending-form). It was such a promising alteration to the way the game went. Youthful exhuberance is something we haven't seen a lot of at Madrid.

I will say that the defenders were VERY kind to him however, his reception elsewhere is going to be a lot less fanciful.

I did thought Zidane played well also, his shooting was poor but he distrubted well and linked up with the offense nicely. But what needs to happen is that he drifts to the left, not the right, and that Baptista drifts to the center, not the left.

I think eventually these two might work up a rapport - it's a waste perhaps of Baptistas frame and power, but I think it could work from what little I saw today.

Also, credit to Robinho giving the game some life but it was Ronaldo who both scored and created both goals. He looks good to start the season, the 35 tally probably won't be that far off!

And... Have to give credit to Cadiz, they hankered Real Madrid many times and deserved the goal (though not the win). Their supporters are fantastic too, very vocal something I haven't noticed before in Spanish football.

BTW, I hope this is not out of the question but there is a Real Madrid forum I frequent and I think any Real fans here should come visit for more talk about the club (not to replace this forum, as it can't) - but to compliment it. Check it out: here (It's English speaking forum).
