PES 2018 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

Your understanding of PES is ace mate.

One of the most difficult things to do in PES is the turn defence. Once you are on the back foot it's a massive slog that try and get back into defensive structure. I am all for it but wish I improve my control over my retreating defenders sprinting backwards and trying to close down a ball carrier at the same time as I concede 90% of my goals online this way

I find getting goal side then trying to disposses is so much better than the previous years of tackling through the back of players unfortunately it takes a while to unlearn previous bad habits.

Yeah goal-side is always the best way to defend. Even in real football, backfooting is really for when we've messed up and trying to patch things up. A lot of backfooted defensive plays in reality ends up having the defender making a foul, or aggressively tug the shirt and concede a yellow. It's just not ideal to let a guy get goalside of you.

Only in a video game we can redeem ourselves in the defensive mess we sometimes create.

In reality, it's best to face-up and contain the guy you are tracking. In real defensive play you really only get one chance to dispossess the guy. Extend a leg at the wrong time, you've basically just planted both legs and it's easy to dribble around a guy frozen up like that. But the PES recovery speed (plus the minor catchup speed boost) makes it possible for second chance redemption.

And not to mention how fast players get up from the floor, after full sliding tackle on the ground lol (like the guy got up from the ground quicker than I can walk away):

I think defensive detailing is one of the biggest thing still missing from the game. Body checks don't get called enough. Stomping on feet (XX tackles clipping the leg and missing the ball) don't get called. A lot of mis-timed defensive decisions don't get punished enough. And by punish, I don't just mean I want fouls. I want to see the guy freeze up when they plant their weight wrong.

I still think PES would really benefit from having a 2 tiered defending control system (the 2 tiers being: tracking + ball winning action)

It was a little before and after this post that I mentioned what I thought about it. Still think it'd make the game much deeper to play against other humans: https://www.evo-web.co.uk/threads/pes-2018-beta-discussion-thread.77680/page-26#post-3222208

I think PES needs an extra shift in terms of acceleration. Tapping R1 (or RT in my case) isn't enough.
In this particular case, FIFA is very good because it has about 5 different types of ball control and speed. So you can have a very close control, a looser one, sprint or speed burst for counter attacks in which players push the ball forward a lot more than they do in PES.

Also, I'm SURE than the first builds of PES 2018 that fans had the chance to try, individuality and dribbling were a lot better. They definetely toned them down for release. Such a shame though.

I would even go as far as saying that the little contextual animations when you have the ball (like little feints and body moves that you can do by just pressing the left stick) were toned down after the first update.

What I really need to see from this new patch is a variation on how the CPU plays, it’s light years away from previous versions.

Thanks a lot!
Unfortunately the ShadowPlay didn't record it with the NVdia control panel's color settings I was using when playing it on my 4K TV. It looked SO much more lifelike!

Super cancel is absolutely essential even for defending because of how your player moves, look at this video;

This guy explains in quite some detail, should be timestamped at 15:28, when you super cancel then your player runs in the direction you point the stick and loses much less momentum, as soon as you see an opponent setting up to play one of the balls over the top, get control of the defender and super cancel into a position where you can either intercept or back off and contain if you won't get there first.

Also look at 18:47, where he uses super cancel, releases R1 to go into jockeying and snuffs out out the winger trying to cut back.

That channel has lots of videos explaining game mechanics/tactics etc.

Wouldn't Wednesday be a better day to call it "midweek"? When does the week start in Ireland?

Just kidding.

Chuny I believe you're enjoying Fifa now .. what's it like? I couldn't deal with the choppy animations and slow shots which the keepers let in most of the time.

Like a lot of people I have been away from PES for a while awaiting the next patch to iron out some annoyances so tonight I decided to start a ML with Ascoli on SS level see how it goes and huge thing infuriated me I was fine that my team were like controlling 11 dump trucks at 47 TS when trying to change their usual tactics I was even ok with the AI spamming high balls or my new star signing Biabiany was being out paced by 64 rated fullbacks with 67 pace hey great I like a challenge fine..

But the fact the CPU would make a simple 8-10 yard pass by me go in the TOTAL opposite way I aimed only to set up the AI to score is bollocks it happened in my second match luckily I still won 3-1 then next game vs Bari im down to 10 men after 8 minutes ridiculous red card but I go 1 nil up and hold on brilliantly defending solid until the 74th minute when im down to 9 men and give away a penalty for chopping their ST down as he goes to shoot into an empty net I had to do it.

I save the penalty yes! 90th min concede a corner clear it to my RB I then have my RW free further up the counter attack is on I position my player facing towards the touchline, aim, press X pass and... he passes the other way across his body across the area to their CF who breezes past my 2 cbs who are having to suddenly turn and retreat in panic too late 1-1 all that for nothing then no glorious win gained catenaccio style just a bitter taste of being cheated by coding

Yea thats football but in this case the CPU struggles to break me down so are using cheap tactics to score really just another thing that puts me off this year to enjoy PES

good advice, but i think that the most of common players never tried training mode in their life, the skills training should be the first mode to understand how play in the proper way , and the same should be done anytime you change your pass/shoot mode/assist . The Help button explains a lot of hidden things that the most of the players don't know, (i.e. try to press it over the gameplan).. that is also due by the poor 'game manual' that every year the KONAMI release

And theres no scripting in Fifa? Which edition of sliders are you on now?. . no.7? . . I'm sure when the sliders are sorted by may next year it will be perfect. . .but then again on day 2 it was called "awesome". . "best soccer game ever" . ."looks just like my favourite team on sky sports"

The thing about learning the skills kilay is that they go out of the window in the heat of the moment. . .keep promising myself I'll learn a few of them but so difficult to execute and remember the combination when under pressure.

Mate i mean the skill free training, when you attempt some trial that explain you different attacking and defensive situations , the most of casual gamers never tried that (i.e advanced shooting use an inverted axis than the basic shoot).
I'm also poor with dribbling skills

Sorry bud I've a few on board. . don't forget the feedback I gave you last year when you were starting your tactics on Pes 2017 which were great by the way .. . . . go easy on me. Do you remember "Kilay there's nobody past the halfway line man"?

Of course you helped me a lot to arrange my tactics last year, and the 2018 version over my youtube channel are a bit outdated, and too much closed, anyway also this year the tactics settings form Konami are again wrong... i've yet sended at least 5 different inquiry about that, plus tweets and what they should need. Advanced tactics are broken (we can't customize them fo CPU using edit mode). That regards also the same style of play that lot team use that is written over the core db and you can't change that, so if you replace Cunturipa with a Classic Milan 90-93 you have the same tactics pattern .
Check it , the most of the teams have just two defensive adv tactics highlighted when they play... only patnerships teams (and not all) have custom advance instructions (like Barça, Liverpool, Arsenal and some others)

I didn't know that about the CPU tactics kilay . . thats ridiculous. ..if you sort out tactics after the patch put them up. . cheers Kilay . . I'm off to bed if I can find it.

Good rest, and btw also past year was the same , just they used a better tactis (the Real Madrid one) as default settings for the common teams

FIFA has a lot of positives and very little negatives.
The thing is though... FIFA needs the caring from their community as much as PES does. Although FIFA needs it in other areas.

PES out of the box is kind of garbage. Until you get a decent option file and you start messing and editing every possible team tactics and strategies (in order to reduce the gap between midfield and the rest of the pitch, and increase the battle for midfield a little bit).

FIFA needs mods in order to make it feel smoother. You need 3 or 4 different patches from Fidel (from the Soccergaming community) and then also mess with the sliders (I couldn't find any set of slider that made me really enjoy the game so I started messing with them by my own until I was satisfied). Once you're done with all that (which in my case took only two days) it feels great. As I explained in this post FIFA vanilla on PC with a good monitor wasn't cutting it for me. It took some mods and playing it on my 4K TV plus Nvidia's control panel Color settings in order for me to feel it believable and to let myself feel comfortable with what I was expieriencing in order to start enjoying.

I have been playing FIFA for a week now and I'm really into it.
Today I went back to PES, started a simple Champions League mode and got really annoyed with it for the first time since it came out.

Still... PES graphics (player models, faces, pitches, color palette, licensed stadiums, etc) are stunning and miles ahead of FIFA's.

Don't be too defensive Deco PES has always been my game over FIFA and I wouldn't shit on it from such a great height unless I had genuine reason too. My post history in regards to FIFA shows the frustrations I have with that game and clearly im not going to post it in here when theres a comparison thread

I am 100% correct in what im saying about PES this year its a stunning game with potential ruined by the fact they rushed it out and took shortcuts its happened before ie- the low shot exploit by the CPU in 2016 was by design because it was a quick way of making the AI able to score same with this years high chipped balls and impossible to defend unmarked runs by the AI. The game will only improve when people voice genuine disgust for lazy work if you are pleased with your lot great but I want more from a football game than they are currently giving

Playing PES LEAGUE is impossible. Why isn't it possible to choose Level 5 Network Restrictions. I feel like it's a lottery where you have to hope your next game isn't laggy as hell.

I agree with you and you're right what you have said. . .. I'm not exactly over the moon with the game and it's faults.. it's just that I haven't given up hope yet while waiting for the patch . .didn't mean to offend you Saintric. .you sound like a reasonable man .. .I do tend to lash out a bit especially after a skinful while watching the soccer .. no offence intended buddy.

So i uninstalled this weeks ago because i was so disillusioned with the latest update 1.02. Yesterday i decided to reinstall and give it another chance. But little over 24 hours later its just a travesty.

I honestly don't know what you guys see in it. It was mildly playable before 1.02 but its just so sluggish. They've reduced the speed and its wrecked the ball physics and the passing. i play manual passing and it takes me a good 3 seconds to get a pass off and then the ball is so slow moving across the turf. Everything has a delayed reaction. then you get a whipped in cross and the keeper dives in slow mo and catches it. And if i see another chested cross instead of a header ill scream, its been in the fucking series for the last 7 years and it wrecks my head.

You also can't get any distance on defensive headers, they are all weak. I just don't understand this game at all.

If this upcoming patch doesn't fix its issues Konami might as well bin the series off because I've had my fill of disappointment with this series. It does so much right but has absolutely maddening and glaringly obvious issues.

Oh and i haven't had a penalty since i bought it and managed two free kicks. Since september. Utter joke.

^ Phew..

Distance from headers come from how much power u can put into it, depending on your body shape. Super cancel is your friend, reshape your body and pull behind the ball a bit more.

Two 2v2 manual games from today. Had a lot of fun.
