PES 2018 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

It's starting to click with me now. . .I think my Pes 2017 approach was half the problem. .I was beginning to think that we were fucked this year . .the demo looked like a mess and I could see what other people were complaining about. . so I started a few games today and after a few of them it started to come together . . the fixed tactics in the demo are preventing it showing it's real potential. . .keeping the ball and the odd dribble is what it's about instead of rushing up the wing and trying to cross . .patience and composure are the key. . .I had some great matches today and couldn't stop playing it . ..Top Player is better than Superstar to play . ..don't get me wrong the faults are still there but tweaking the advanced tactics helps. . .I'm optimistic about the game now and with a couple of patches it could be a really good game.

I barely touch the run button, only to maintain momentum with a forward while defending and for the odd burst to move before passing.

You also have to be careful with how you use the dribble because micro movements can have a domino effect on your shape especially if your to keen to burst forward or close players down in defence.I'm always using the rt tigger to trap and touch before I do pass and my patience is always rewarded by the shielding mechanic kicking in.

There's so much to love in this game.I'm sure in time many will appreciate the subtlety on offer. It shines through.

I agree with above the Xbox Version plays miles better than the PS4 and I'm on the Pro. There is dead zones on the pad and feels clunky onmy Pro.
As well, the 4K looks bad I think nothing special. Not holding much hope for the X in 4K.

You're right. .. I'm just beginning to realise all of this now. .when I say dribble I mean a tiny swerve to avoid a challenge and keep possession . .the right move or holding the ball up can open up avenues that weren't there a moment ago.

- no adv instr
- fluid form
- no dmf position when in possession

That solves the dmf dropping back.

I know in my stream that adv instruction > attack > defensive, then selecting the CMF

was really nice. From there just make sure there were no DMF's in possession. It was great seeing the CMF play like a proper DMF, who stood on the attacking side of the forward - thus blocking them.

Was about to post pretty much the same thing. I was too stuck in my old ways, still playing like I had my 2017 ML team of superstars, ready to annihilate the opposition. by cooling it a bit, passing the ball around, looking for an opportunity to advance up the pitch, the game becomes a lot more entertaining. Top player seems fine, but there is still a bit of a "green zone" effect going on when you get a run up the flanks,
Where the defender sort of backs off and leaves you to make a potentially deadly cross.

I agree Isslander there's way too much space behind the defence from the wings . . .it feels like if they cut in behind you it's goodnight.. . .also the reaction of your defender when turned by a winger . . he's absolutely in no man's land and hasn't a hope of catching the guy who just skinned him. .. hopefully this will be looked at.

Lots of games tonight against inter, boca juniors, top player manual passing.

Very difficult to get through the middle with inter playing a central triangle. Two central midfielders covering the channels and holding position, while a additionally midfielder closed space, chased lost balls and basically hugged any of my receiving players.

There back four was always very tight and I always felt space and time was a precious commodity.

Positionally every game felt perfect against them and any stray pass of mine was mopped up,recycled and quickly dispatched to forwards weaving into space or away from my defenders to receive lofted passes.I had to do so much micro managing with my cursor just to retain some structural integrity off the ball.

It felt almost like the game knew how I played and had a answer for every outcome.

This game for me can be so majestic and while it does have those sudden moments under different advanced tactics, the cpu when it is right is so right.Especially inter that have a great midfield set-up in the demo.

One thing that is really standing out for me now is movement, especially off the ball.I spent a lot of time tonight playing inter with cursor control of my last defender tracking runs while I left my teammate ai to hold the wide position. It was the only way I could stop inter on the break and from getting in behind me on crosses or just enough to win the ball, block or header...Just brilliant!..There movement was just incredible,as was there use of the ball.

Sadly not many fouls by the cpu though.

The camera swings too fast for my liking. But I'm interested as it looks more realistic from a real life player pov.
There's a trick to get the camera not to swing around as much when playing defense. Keep the ball in front of you when defending. Don't let the ball get pass you or the camera will rotate. You get used to it in time.
i'm going to post more videos and i'll show all my settings. I'm liking this better than 2017 with these settings. I want more people to try this way to give input because it's very different than default settings.

Overall I've seen the demo as a step back, to the extent that I'm worried about the full game. I might have to wait and see whether the positioning and the player awareness is fixed in a patch - right now I'm seeing too many passes are just allowed to run through to an attacker, whether it's aerial or on the floor. The passing in general is way too heavy on the back heels and flicks, in particular the CPU passing is galling with it's no-look backheels and instant throughballs to unleash wingers who simply aren't tracked. And most of all I'm finding way too often that the positioning of my teammates is as guilty of eliminating any midfield battle as the jacked-up CPU passing vision and accuracy.

There are definitely some positives - the dribbling is way too powerful right now (again, it's the passivity of defence causing it) but it does feel like a joy to control, and there's a looseness to how skilful players carry the ball and change direction at speed which is really reminiscent of real life top flight forwards. The bounce and bobble on the ball feels more natural and believable, and the extent to which ground passing lifts up off the turf when you charge manual passes up is delightful.

My biggest concern overall is that, whereas with the beta I really felt like I could defend with my entire team and create as much of a midfield battle as I wanted, a handful of key changes have really hindered this aspect of the game for me. I can still see a lot of the positives from the beta but a lot of the nuance and subtlety has gone due to certain tweaks being way off. I'm hoping this is easy to remedy, at least as a day one patch. I guess for now I'll wait and see.

I scored this early on, game 2 or 3 (hence the lumpen passing) - I thought I'd set the game to Superstar so I was really worried the game was too easy. Turns out it was still on Regular.

I love the slight swerve on this shot. This is the level of natural movement the shooting needs far more regularly.

What frustrates me as a fan of the game since day one, is how we always, seemingly unanimously, do this.

We say:
...so we all agree with the lack of fouls, the lack of working stats like (passing, shooting, tackling, etc), lack of aggression, too accurate passes that bypasses midfield, a bit too much space, defensive line too low, CPU doesn't like to close down players and back-peddle too much.

And players ignoring the ball and letting it run by them . ..also cursor picking the wrong player a lot.

"But other than that it's great, love the game, love how-" No, wait. What?

I really don't think any of the "moaners" expect the perfect game. But for us all to agree that the above is the case but still support the product...

...man, I know it's the best 17/18 football game and that there's not much choice, I totally get it, I do. But we deserve what we get, don't we? Don't you think?

All I'm saying is, if you love the game and you're sick of people moaning, I know, it's annoying, but we've got to kind of understand it.

keeper can stop a speeding bullet but not a flick shot. Proof of scripting. My keeper couldn't even stop a soft flick just in the box, it bounced off his hands he fell back and in goal.
And now tell me ur excited abt this game
It's not scripting though, is it? It's goalkeeper logic that's been tuned/applied to A) stop too many rocket shots going in* and B) reduce the amount of palm-outs*, but the logic that creates keeper confusion when you perform "soft flicks" and "strange" shots is unaffected. So you're left with a bag of strange reactions.

*Though they still exist in spades.

It's a plaster (band-aid) isn't it. "Too many long shots are going in!" "Okay, make it so that the keepers save more of them." The goalkeeper's other decisions aren't affected by this, so you may find that even terrible goalkeepers can pull a rocket shot out of the air like they're catching a speeding bullet, but then close-range they palm every shot into the net.

I don't like seeing "scripting" mentioned so often. In the Master League it's there, thanks to the "team spirit" system which has such a massive effect on your ability to even pass the ball. But in a demo? I don't see it.

People can moan away to their hearts content ..I can understand why. . .I highlighted what I did in the hope that coming patches can sort some of it out. . .I know that the game in it's current state is not acceptable and I won't buy it until the faults are sorted out .. .Pes 2017 was slated as well and now it's being lauded as probably the best we've had. . who knows what way this one will turn out. . .could be shite could be great . .have to wait and see. One other thing Chris there's justifiable complaining and then there's nitpicking and never seeing any positives. .it's a thin line.

Completely agree, I also get the feeling our concerns never really get listened to because well, we support the game and the series regardless. I've already decided I won't buy the game unless I know the AI isn't going to be like in the demo. that's the bare minimum for me.

If the game isnt tightened up come full release I may purchase the PC version in the hope the great modding community it has can pull a few strings to improve the gameplay because overall i like the base of 2018 it has a lot of potential but almost feels like the AI are not switched on? Starting to wonder if they just added an even easier difficulty level rather than a new harder one so this years superstar is basically top player (and legend is 2017 superstar)
