PES 2014 Discussion Thread

I'm taking that preview with pinch of salt but I am alarmed by him saying the game scores against you whenever it feels like it, with nothing you can do. That is my number one reason why I barely play PES at the moment.

I think the player models look great. I like the way the game looks this year. Much better lighting.

It looks the closest a football game has come looking to a real football match.

Although the shoe textures for the security staff pitch side look like from about 1996.

Pretty sure I read the other day that Konami has the Champ's League licence for a while still. Not 1 year. I could be wrong...but I'm sure the person that said 1 year can't prove that either.

I'm a bit confused with Asim's impressions though - not with the content, but the fact he played an early code and wrote some impressions, then played a revised code and said he won't make further comment as his findings were about the same and that other people had released comments. And then he's released these impressions. Was there actually more than 5-10% difference in the codes?

What I'm trying to say is - it doesn't seem like he played a code that had gone significant updates from the earliest code he played and made his feedback known. So there seems to be some misunderstanding as to whether the problems should have been fixed in this code. Either he thought they had been or he should have put a qualifier/disclaimer at the front of his impressions.

An Aussie PES community guy told me he played the game a couple of weeks ago at a convention and it was that good they could release it now. So I think we should all wait and see what we think ourselves but let's hope these issues have been tidied up for the demo code.

Who cares about that?

Comeon. It's only fair that the equivalent of Beckham's hair followers, from the EA forum, would be on here as well.

In all seriousness though, how is it that one impression has instilled so much doubt in the fanbase? How is it that not more than 1 impression agrees with the testimony of Asim, and yet this response is present?

If the anxiety-driven shitstains on my young player's shorts are not crystal clear, seeping through in stages and at least 720p squared, I swear I'm going with FIFA this year

My biggest concern right now is: What does Konami have to hide?.
We're almost two months away and there is only 1 good quality real gameplay video, but several screenshots.

EA haven't released many videos of FIFA either, but I think that's because there aren't many changes in terms of gameplay. What are they going to show? A few new animations and what else? Not much.

But KONAMI have a brand new engine, new graphics, a lot of new movements, and they've made a lot of claims about smoothness, the way the game flows, and how real it seems.

The way I see it, it's like Konami is saying "Look at these images, the game looks very good, look at the lighting, the faces, etc... but we don't want you to see it motion because we're not too confident about the way it looks and moves". It worries me really.

I know we're going to get a lot of videos at Gamescom, but...

Asim's critic pretty much confirms what I spotted about the game not being really new.
The continuity -or confirmation- of the old gameplay formula is what worries me: positional patterns from last years are still there, specially the awareness problem with OTB defensive players, who move away from the attackers intentionally so that three or four players are always clear to receive a pass.
It is a canned behaviour: OTB defensive players constantly adjust to a starting scenery position, always favouring the attacking options. Like in "The Truman Show". The player with the ball is Truman, of course. From time to time, Truman feels there's something wrong with the scenery: the people around him misteriously aligns so that he can find the way. But, what the hell...

Ironically, in one of the most promoted game features (OTB offensive runs) the defensive team gets all the credit (or the blame, if it was real football). This scenario reminds me of arcade racing game like Daytona, where the AI slows the player ahead of you. It is similar to the catch-up bug, only that it is performed by 22 players at once. Let's call it the build-up bug.

This design manipulation is a clear indicator of Konami's inhability to recreate a complex multiple players positional awareness. I have nothing against good scripted behaviour -I reckon games need it-, but this is nothing like it. Seing it present one more year is dissapointing, but I still support PES, and I'm confident PES 2014 will surpass my expectations.

First off, let me say that I don't take any sides with previews as I trust my own judgement when I play a game rather than what other's say about preview codes (no matter how good or bad they make the game to be, it's their opinion, their style of play, and whatever hidden agenda they may have all laced in which may be different from my style). Simple as some people care about the shooting mechanics, some care about dribbling, some put more emphasis on nets, etc. So I will not put too much emphasis on other's opinions without me playing the game first. But with that said, I did enjoy PES more than FIFA last year.

Now that you know a bit about where I'm coming from, I want to say this: It is very normal psychologically that you are all more concerned about Asim's review while many other reviews have stated the contrary. While we all hope and wish for the perfect game, or the return of PES 5/6, we have been hurt and still have a huge doubt within us from the previous years of PES. And with all the broken/empty promises that Konami has given us over the years that produced the dreaded 09-11 era of PES, we still have a feeling that 2014 is still sounding too good to be true. Now that someone has wrote something that we generally "believe", it is easier for us to believe him than others which sound too good to be true.

So before we get our hands on the demo (or the actual game), please let's not turn on each other, and see for ourselves what the game will actually be. and let's all agree that Konami's PR is really horrible. haha

This and proxis post are spot on

I find it amazing that people are taking asims views on whatever code he is playing as gospel. So everyone besides Asim got a cheque?

Come now people be sensible. PES2014 is new in every sense of the word based on what we have read so far except Asim and expecting it to be a hit from the 1st try is crazy. Hopefully what we get is not going to be a total balls up but I dont think Konami will pull another PES2008 which at its core was an enjoyable game but so buggy and incomplete that it knocked Konamis reputation badly.

LOL at xavi2009 I bet he licked his lips when he saw asims views and did a little "I told you so" jig before posting

Wish Lami got a chance to play..

Btw, why doesn't he

Beats the hell out of me...

Really doesn't make any difference. I'll be just another guy with his impressions based on his own opinion. What I might not like you might and vice versa. I'd prefer everyone forming their own, since it's your money on the line.

Besides that, I'm not in Europe anyway, neither USA, nor Australia. So the chances me playing any code now is non-existent.

Can't stop smiling at that dictator picture. Every year it's the same with him. I still remember several years back when he got mad a Lami and fired him as a WENB mod. Lami of all people. I quit soon after:SMUG:

Thanks, but no need to bring that up now mate. It was ages ago. All forgotten.

its the last year of their contract, EA will come in with the big money next season and that will be that

From what I recall the license has been secured for another 2/3+ years.

this year planned to buy the original game.
seen what has happened..mediafir.. mega.. zippysh...

I'm honest
repeatedly watching these images .. I do not see much difference graph, is more a mod for previous versions PES, it has absolutely nothing to envy .. in these pictures not antialising
konami happens?

shadow???

Of course they don't have to make everything from scratches.. like stadium.. It was fine, just add extra details, better lighting/shadowing.. then we are set. The evolution is needed on the gameplay and animation part. No mod can change how a player model is animated or collisions are detected ;) .

Current consoles seem to have so so antialiasing.. not only with PES but also other games, but on PC the antialiasing is much better in my experience. If you want all official besides the pitches to be high-quality modeled. Then be brepared with lags..

Even a game such as dirt3, grid 2, have simple crowds.

If I want to slag a game off without playing it cos I think I know how it plays then I will!!!

;-)

On WENB forum i wrote this:
"It really depends on how you play the game imho.
Maybe the players turn slowly because the acceleration of the mass still had momentum to a wrong direction or the timing on the controller was bad.
Also floaty shots can be a result of wrong timing.
This is why so many ppl have different opinions of the preview code.
Hopefully this year you are forced to play football like in real life.
If you treat PES 2014 like a "videogame" (tap-tap-tap-goaaal) or dribble with the ball into the net with one player, you will get punished.
I really hope that!"

So true. I hope, this year people will have to use brain, instead of mashing sprint button. Will be brilliant.

Floaty shots? Who said that?

Shots hit when you're in less than optimal position or body shape should NOT float. I've seen shots get scuffed and bounce on the ground with little pace, skew wide and or high. That's what I expect to see.

I've never seen a shot in real life that floats as if someone had scooped it up with their arms and thrown it to the keeper.

I haven't read about floaty shots in any previews so I hope you were just talking generically...

btw, some of the problems from asims previews were already evident from the gamespot video.

imo it looks like the players and ball are trying to push through a strong wind. football is a slow sport, but it's not unnaturally slow -- as in, when people get on a football pitch they dont decrease in speed and mobility

also -- and this is the real worry -- look at the passer after EVERY pass. watch him for 1 second and see what happens... he gets locked into a 'walking/stumbling' animation. this happens to every player after every pass. FIFA had big problems with this in the past

YouTube - PES 2014 - E3 2013 Stage Demo

I just went back to watch this gameplay footage that was recorded off screen a few weeks back: YouTube - PES 2014

Maybe I'm seeing it wrong but you can see the time gap between the power bar coming up and the ball being kicked...BUT the reason for the delay to me seems natural. It's that the player doesn't have the ball at his feet. Half the time they lose the ball even though the power bar has gone up because they've been tackled or run into someone else but the times when the ball has been kicked look natural, relative to where the ball is.

This might be something different to what some reviewers have experienced and we won't know ourselves until we play it with our own hands. But at least in this video, could it be that some people expect the ball to be kicked as soon as they press the button even though the ball is a metre in front of them. Blame True ball tech lol

Think about real life. When You decide to shoot, it takes a while. You don't kick the ball instantly. Such delay should be normal.

I agree. My biggest concern would be if players can nick the ball away from you if they just hold down the pressure button and you're waiting a split second for the animation. When I play FIFA at a mates place, he would go nuts on the pressuring so I would use the slower run speed and then dodge him. As you can see above, these guys are holding down sprint all the time lol. No wonder they can't hold the ball.

Like I said earlier in the thread, this is just what happened with FIFA 08 too. They want the animations to flow better without all the cutting and adjusting of the animation and player position. I don't mind a bit of delay since it makes you more careful of thinking about the position of the ball to the player's body, but most people want instant feedback on button presses.

FUT in 13 - I agree, it's too fast.
Seasons - ok for me.

Offtop:
Soldado just signed with Spurs. That means, Bale goes to Real. That's gonna be something!
