There's a simple reason why people choose to use a dpad or an analog stick. It's a question of how closely it fits what you are capable of in the game. The analog stick was mostly aesthetic up to and including PES 2009 because it was giving you options you didn't have - both directionally and in terms of partially-pressing, or 'feathering', a direction... Therefore it felt clumsy and vague. The dpad by contrast was efficient, definitive and instantaneous. What you pressed was what you got.
PES 2010 would only have converted a few people because it's interpretation of 360 controls was utter rubbish and was still far closer to dpad levels of detail. However 2011 is definitely a significant step up from that, even if the beta was still a fair distance short of FIFA levels of freedom of movement. From the sounds of it the Gamescom build and beyond will be another step up and we've heard stuff about some level of speed control based on feathering; if so then there will be no excuse not to give the stick a good go because getting to grips with it will genuinely benefit your game.
