PES 2011 Discussion thread

There's a simple reason why people choose to use a dpad or an analog stick. It's a question of how closely it fits what you are capable of in the game. The analog stick was mostly aesthetic up to and including PES 2009 because it was giving you options you didn't have - both directionally and in terms of partially-pressing, or 'feathering', a direction... Therefore it felt clumsy and vague. The dpad by contrast was efficient, definitive and instantaneous. What you pressed was what you got.

PES 2010 would only have converted a few people because it's interpretation of 360 controls was utter rubbish and was still far closer to dpad levels of detail. However 2011 is definitely a significant step up from that, even if the beta was still a fair distance short of FIFA levels of freedom of movement. From the sounds of it the Gamescom build and beyond will be another step up and we've heard stuff about some level of speed control based on feathering; if so then there will be no excuse not to give the stick a good go because getting to grips with it will genuinely benefit your game.

Good reaction. He deserved that one.

I didn't meant to be offensive, sorry if I've sounded that way. I just think that you can't fully experience PES 2011 without the analog, and playing with D-Pad in PES 2011 is just pure stubborness and may actually be unfair to those who have to get the grips with manual passing.

Actually an engine may be as small as you want and can be coded in minutes. An engine is the motor, the code that makes something work, a base code that manages data and content with a purpose.

I've used engines even for banners in flash (box 2d and things like that). People uses the word as if it's something very specific when actually an engine is what someone says it's an engine.

Of course, there are commercial engines out there. There are lots of them and for very different purposes, and nowadays a sports game is in fact the sum of different engines, being them bought, developed inside or badly developed inside...

You could say every "department" of a game constitutes an engine, and you could call collisions detection code an engine itself or call engine to the whole "things related to physics". It will all depend on how it's coded and how different areas are split inside the code.

So, don't let taxonomy confuse us and let's divide the game into tangible things we can describe, comment and tell how should be improved. And if someone wants to call "engine" to a part of code, it's free to do so. The important thing is to add deep views of the different game parts and try to talk as much as possible from a technical point, not the simple amateurish "they should make a better engine, end of rant."

I, for once, I'm very very interested in seeing how the mocap data has been polished and integrated into the animation engine (oops, I said the word). Last year there was a terrible implementation that lead to many animations mismatching the position of the player vs the ball, and a lot of "magical" touches to the ball that didn't correspond with what you were seeing. Surely Placebo will remember this as well as his wife works in mocap and I remember him saying she thought pes mocap work was crap.

So, with complete ignorance of how is it really build, but guessnig things, I would say that there was a problem with the data not being properly treated and poorly integrated into an animation engine (ooops, there again) that had a lot of problems with the ball physics engine (aaaagh, another one!).

Surely because the animations engine (ouch) was not finished, they couldn't blend that much the animations and had problems with IK (inversed kinetics) altogether, so at the end they had to mantain long animations without blending which resulted in a more slow gameplay. To adress that you can put a new engine (hi all) or simply improve your own. It all depends on money/time/difficulty.

One year later I really hope they've solved all this because the outcome was very poor and things didn't seem reliable at any moment. The same went for the collisions detection (no matter if they have an engine for that or not).

cant wait for the pes2011 demo, just updated my ps3 and enabled the auto download for tomorrow :) fingers crossed.

I read somewhere some rumours of people having the demo automatically download for them today, dunno how true that is.

So did 2008 , 2009 and 2010 and thats why PES is in deep shit now
It's not exactly in deep shit.. Maybe previous ones, but not this year. They've really impressed and proved they were wrong before and jumped right back on track.

And Seabass never said they were using engines from ISS64, but instead they kept doing things the same way (FAmicon style) since then, meaning they were coding a game in 2008 like they used to in 1998, and they never got used to new technologies.

No? That's the impression I got when he said they were still doing PES the same way they used to do it back on Famicom.

Well at least he did confess something should be changed and I'm glad they did. It's pretty obvious after playing the beta.

cheers man, thats me making a pes 2011 option file , i can add full bundesliga to league B and 18 championship teams to ML division 2 , happy days:BAND:

Bear in mind that PES 2011 is not the result of one year of work with the usual Seabass, but the result of two years of work of a team with 200 guys, + the usual Seabass team.

I know there's still many people here that don't believe the "Blue Sky Team" is real, but well, I do, and it was clear to me once I played the beta, and should be clear (or not) to everyone once the demo is out. And it should become even more clear next year.

Any news on what classic teams/players are going to be in the game? I hope they have put Pele, Zico and co back in the game.

This year ? This year will begin with release of PES 2011 and reaction of customers, sales, etc, so far they are in ds.
We ll see what will bring this year :-)

If you're talking sales-wise then they haven't really been in "deep ****" since god knows when. Both them and EA sell tons every year regardless.

It would seem Konami have put in enormous effort for 2011, I hope it pays off for them, from what I've heard of people that played the beta & played the test versions at gaming conventions it seems that we've finally got the PES we know back :D

Btw, do you guys reckon the demo will have online games or just exhibition vs CPU?

Anyone know at what time there are updates over at the PS network? I'm actually excited just to be watching those vids.

Just offline from what has been confirmed, and offline multiplayer as well.

So, in this Automatic Download for PS3, can you somehow program it to auto download the PES demo? or it just auto downloads PS3 firmware updates?

It automatically downloads demos, game patches, system updates etc.

If the PES demo is released over night (like the RUSE demo) then I'll greet it with open arms when I wake up in the morning.

Isn't the Sony d-pad actually analog? :P

But seriously, welcome to FIFA's online problem. It will be interesting to see how Konami deal with it, and how they have balanced it. I would agree that people playing manual should be rewarded and people playing "assisted" should be handicapped in some way. Sadly EA have neglected the manual crowd, seeing as it's maybe only 5% of the players, if that. Meaning manual online is pointless unless playing against another manual player.

Yes, but how does it know to download PES2011 demo?

Do I have to manually enter the demo's name somewhere so it knows to download it?

I'm confused...

I think the term manual is being bandied about far too freely, much like the total freedom thing, which distorts the image for those people who haven't played the game.

PES 2011's passing is nothing like manual. It's like FIFA's semi-assisted in it's current, very forgiving form - except that if you aim slightly to one side of the player (as you often will), the recipient will take it on their left or right foot accordingly. Oddly I also tried holding L2 and pressing X to manual pass in the beta and the ball was clearly being directed to the recipient. Thought that was odd, as I did have other moments where holding L2 definitely felt like the ball was a bit freer.

There's definitely a lot more to it than standard PES 2010 passing or FIFA assisted passing, but not really enough that a d-pad user would get an advantage.

You cant argue fair points with most on here anymore too many ppl never played the older games or know how konami work.

Anyone who played PES1 and 2 then saw what konami did with a new game engine on the the PS2 with 3 which finally after a few years of tweaking led to the great era of PES5 and 6 WE7-WE9.

Of course a new engine is needed and all it would bring would be a better game why wouldn't anyone want that lol.

Even if you don't like FIFA you can clearly tell the difference when EA introduced a new engine with FIFA 08 to today compared with the earlier games on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
