PES 2011 Discussion thread

I don't know whether it has been posted here before or not but this is the hands-on preview from GameSpot in TGS2010.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 Updated Hands-On Impressions
By Dan Chiappini, GameSpot AUSep 17, 2010 9:02 am

We pull on the studs and carve up the pitch as England scraps with Brazil.

E3 2010 gave us our first look at this year’s version of the venerable Pro Evolution Soccer football series. Catch-up seems to be the name of the game, and while the runaway success FIFA has experienced over the past few years has made it the market leader, PES clearly isn't prepared to give up the battle and go quietly into the night. During this year's Tokyo Game Show we braved the legions of football fans eager to strap in and boot around on the grass.

The work-in-progress Xbox 360 version we played included support for a chunk of the global national sides, and while limited time prevented us from exploring menus and scoping out all the club level options, there appeared to be a good amount of choice of teams available. Rather than kick us straight onto the grass to pass the ball around, once we had selected a matchup between England and Brazil, we were treated to a bit of preshow entertainment. Beginning our run in the tunnel, we took to the field as broadcast television camera angles captured players giving instructions to each other and warming up. Star players like Kaka got their share of the screen time as the two teams lined up for their anthems. As "God Save the Queen" echoed around the stadium, English players mimed along.

After being introduced in last year's game, full 360-degree ball dribbling makes its return in PES 2011. Without it, sports titles feel more like early '90s arcade titles than current-generation sports simulators. Longtime PES fans may face a short adjustment period, but FIFA fans either dipping their toes with the competitor product or returning to the PES fod should have no trouble making the transition between the two control systems. Dribbling felt smooth and responsive, and even if you're not one to perform ballhandling tricks like feints, simply shielding the ball with your player's body by facing away from the attacker, or drawing a defender to fire off a pass, is simple and rewarding. Ball control is king, and we noticed during our play session the ease with which we were able to pick a gap and lure our opposition to commit a man before threading the needle and stepping the ball around the corner. Passing to team members felt a little bit floaty, while fast-paced ping-pong passing (done away with in this year's FIFA game) frequently set up chances for strikers inside the box.

Physicality also plays a big part in this year's title. Players jostle on and off the ball, and while we played the CPU rather than another human player, the game certainly didn't take it easy. Free kicks were accompanied by slow-mo replays of slide tackles, while wronged players won't just stand there and take it, often held back from fighting by fellow squadmates after taking a tumble in the grass. Things get even more passionate when a player scores a yellow or red card, frequently appealing to the referee and flanked by visibly distressed AI buddies hoping to have the decision overturned.

Emotion appears to have been high on Konami's wish list this year and extends from anger to frustration. Players failing to score against open goals fall to the ground once the ball has gone dead, covering their face with their hands in horror at having squandered a chance to get on the board, equalise, or put their team's score beyond reach.

Will the new features in PES 2011 give FIFA 11 a run for its money? Only time will tell, but from what we've played of both games already, football fans are the real winners here with two titles to suit their tastes. Pro Evolution Soccer is due to toebash its way onto all major platforms later next month.

hi i am very sad because, according to peers can be played with teams in the Copa Libertadores ML BRAZIL AND THE SELECTION OF THIS LICENSE NO and I'm very angry, anyone know if this is true, what of the Brazil team I have a know the other image.

Oh FFS I know where I would like to stick a new engine.........

If anything PES2011 is proof that a new engine is not needed. It still needs smoother and more varied animations to keep the Fifa crowd happy, but the gameplay is all there and as good as it's ever been.

You experience moments in this game that just don't happen in Fifa and for that reason alone I think there is plenty of untapped potential in the current engine.

1+

It's becomming increasingly common now for posters who you have not seen in this thread suddely appear a week after PES and FIFA have been released with FIFA obviously shite this year, as every year imo.

All them having some pop accross PES's bow as it seems it may overtake FIFA as the game to own once again. Engine not right here, too pixely there....

In my eyes PES will beat FIFA as the game to own every year, i have stuck by her through thick and thin and even if Konami ceased to make anymore PES i'd simply stop playing football games as EA would no doubt bully any other developers into a Kobayashi Maru!!

Every game PES brings it just has that something

obviously you guys don't know what a game engine is; retaining the same 'feeling' is 100% possible while at the same time, restructuring the whole source code, make them more efficient.

after all, they're all read as 0 and 1 by the computer... lol

hi guys after playing the demo, realised there is no way to select manual crossing by default? it's like on automatic? is it possible to change it to full manual in the full game? i know they had this in button configurations in pes6. why the hell do they keep taking out things like this?

i know you can use L1 + cross but who will bother using that in online or offline multiplayer modes?!

So why do you think PES desperately needs a new engine, and what will it add that cannot be achieved with the current one?

btw, don't buy the game from a European store, the English Commentary is only on UK copies, apparently.

That's strange, all the copies i bought in the past in the dutch stores featured english commentary. Pes never had any dutch commentary.

Hi Elfie, it was something to do with uk sales i think. Like in previous years people from the uk was buying the euro version, and in turn uk sales suffered. I think this is the reason allthough i stand to be corrected.

Well, i certainly hope not. No dutch and no english means i have to go for french or german?
I really cannot imagine the copies sold in Holland not having english commentary, although i stand to be corrected :P

I suppose you could wait another week like the rest of us.:COAT: :P

jeuxvideo.com gave it 16/20 which has to be taken into the consideration that EA and this site are best friends. They do lots of advertisement on their site

lol, no Mark Lawrenson this year mate ;)

Trance ftw by the way :D
Indeed, for the win!

Dropping Mark Lawrenson was a no brainer, however not installing the one, the only, Chris Kamara as his replacement is a massive shame :) I fear after a few months I'll be shouting "oh f@#k off Jim" as opposed to Mark whenever he chimes up.

"UNBELIEVABLE JEFF" x 1,369,210 even though Jeff Stelling isn't even in the game ;]
Haha!

Champion: Looks like a foul, and the referee is walking over. Does it deserve a card Chris?
Kamara: I... I'm, I'm not quite sure what's going on Jeff !!
Champion: .. Thanks for that... Christine. Robben to take the free kick.

Does anyone know what the default difficulty level for the WE demo is, I presume it is Professional like the UK version but maybe not, in any case I played one game with the difficulty set to one right of the default and "Green Zone" crossing is the same, sadly.

Dude, this green zone issue your having is related to the player switch or cursor, its not fifa pes2011,you have much more cursor control and have to be tuned into this dynamic of the game. With pes2010 and fifa the ai does this for you more and makes certain moments off the ball automatically, but in pes2011 you have more manual player control and have to do a lot more of the player adjustments off the ball(set the cursor to assisted and see the how quickly the cursor changes to make you adjust the players further back or in a position you think is illogical, but it makes perfect sense).Theres a reason for it and one you will grow to appreciate when passing is second nature and not something your solely focused on.It ties in heavily to the defending mechanics of the game but rather then explain i will let you discover this for yourself. It was always like this back in the day but something thats been forgotten by many used to the teamvision ai of next gen pes and the ai of fifa.I prefer the system in pes2011 its more hands on and allows you more off the ball control when you master it.

I had this issue when i was learning in my first few days but now ive mastered the game and had it for a few weeks im finding this isnt a issue now, however, watching it happen to a mate playing the game for the first time yesterday made me see it was something i was doing when learning rather then a fault with the game.

On another note, played fifa11 for 3 hours last night after playing pes2011 for nearly two weeks solid and i have to say what a joke the review scores are for fifa11,theres going to be alot of creditbility lost this year if journos carry on praising this one dimensional piece of shit. Its just a polished fifa10 with the same mickey mouse player likenesses and artificial players, totally devoid of substance, and as my lovely wife said last night, mass market fodder.

I think people have become lazy over the years playing fifa, they dont want to think anymore or give a game like pes2011 the two week bedding in period thats really required to start to appreciate this game.

Two weeks in and totally different game now,any niggles i had are gone and i fully understand and applaud this years effort from konami.....OPUS game.

Hi Expander.

I'm not sure that's what he's referring to as "green zone" - and if it is, then disregard my comment.

What I think he means - and that's something I've been experiencing a lot, lately - is that, even in the hardest difficulty setting, if you attack through the wings, if you get really close to the goal line, there you can cross at ease, because even if you have a defender chasing you, he will not try to intercept the cross, he will not put his leg out to stop you. I feel that 9 out of 10 times we can always cross if you go near the goal line, on the wings.

Also, one thing that is bugging me now is that sometimes, when we are running towards a loose ball, I cannot prepare a pass or a shot before the player actually touches the ball. I know that this should have been expected for the first time they actually stop the passes from being "on rails", but it still is sad. Sometimes I'm running towards a loose ball and so is a CPU defender, and I want to shoot it first-time, as soon as I get to it, but the player ends up ignoring my command and trying to dribble the ball, just for it to be then intercepted by the CPU's defender.

Can anyone else confirm these behaviors?

Asides from that, can't wait for the full release.

Regards,

Paulo Tavares

Konami made a fantastic job with PES 2011 combining freedom and individuality and finally offering an animation-engine that flows well. Having played the Fifa 11-demo for hours and the PES 2011 demo for hours I can say that PES 2011 feels much more like a real football-game, the whole asthetics, gamespeed, inertia, pitch-size, ballphysics, animation, footplanting... it imho feels much more real than Fifa 11.

Fifa 11's iceskating (since Fifa 08/09 it got worse) and over-physical play as well as the cartoony look and small pitch, this all together make it feel unrealistic.

But there is one thing that Fifa does better besides an extraordinarily good english commentary and nice atmosphere and that is its active AI.

I'm not talking about general AI, the offensive AI and defensive AI, ie. the team-AI, are both much worse than in PES 2011, its attacks are highly predictable, its defense is poor, but there is some thing its AI does better imho... and I'm searching for a word for it.. maybe I should call it awareness-AI or action-AI.

In Fifa 11 my players are always active in motion, they try to go into spaces, they try to shake off their covers and when the situation changes they adapt quickly and seamlessly.

In PES 2011 the players follow the set tactics and strategy very well but they don't react to changed situations, they aren't as aware to what is needed in the very moment. In reality players actively adapt and if necessary make something that leaves their preset tactic/strategy if it's necessary at that very moment if it's useful and then they return to their tactic.

So if there is one thing Konami should improve with PES 2012 it's an introduction of an individual awareness/action-AI so that the players become a bit more alive, other than that they are much nearer to a perfect simulation of this sport than EA's interpretation.

For PES 2011 they should get rid of the exploit-bugs ASAP as well as of the xbox360-stutter!

I was listening to the radio earlier and they had a fifa 11 competition and they mentioned that some Gaming magazine (think they said GamesMaster) rated 94% for FIFA 11, I mean WTF. They also said it was "the best football game EVER" - what an absolute pisstake.

Pjft

Theres definetly a issue in the demo on top player of the opposition players just shadowing you down the wings rather then trying to win the ball in the demo, but in real football this happens alot when the opposition is behind the ball they wont always commit, however some stating thats its a easy cross and goal because the defenders in the box dont react is false.

Not having a issue with players responding to my commands though.

There seems to be real exploits and it's not just that on the cornerline the defense lets one make an unchallenged cross.. from the reports it seems one can also walk with the ball along the cornerline into the goal-zone unchallenged... that is as long as you merely walk, as soon as you hit the run-button the defense reacts.

If confirmed, and some on kitanamedia have confirmed it, it is a serious bug that needs patching ASAP.

The other serious exploit is the ability to make easy goals with manual passes instead of using the shoot-button. The goalkeeper reacts mostly only to shots and not to manual passes, so obviously the goalkeeper-AI is scripted.

That exploit is also a bug that needs to be patched ASAP.

That and the xbox360-stutters.
