If you’d like to see a version of the video with significantly higher image quality than shown on YouTube (and a closer representation of how the game looks on PS4), you’ll be able to download the 1080p video online soon.
The time of day is accelerated by x60, which is why the video covers from 6pm – 9pm in Chile in just three laps. Accelerating the speed of time is something you can choose to adjust before you race and it’s also why the sunlight disappears so quickly at 1:58. :-)
Design Director Paul Rustchynksy is the driver. He’s using a Thrustmaster “T80 DRIVECLUB Edition” wheel, which explains why his last lap (in first person racing view) is the fastest.
The video was captured in one take from a version of the game still in development. Optimisations to the visual quality of the game are made every day, so while there are lots of impressive details on show you may also spot some things we’re still working on – like improving the anti-aliasing for certain assets and making sure that nothing pops in to view.
We decided to show this time trial event with on-screen display disabled, because lots of people wanted to see this and it’s something you can choose to configure in the game. We noticed that when we did this, the game still plays the sound effects for Overdrives, so we’re fixing this.
The way that we have captured each car’s distinctive audio is evident here because we’ve disabled the in-game soundtrack music, but we’ve actually just made further improvements to the quality of the audio in the game today (and fixed the backfire so that you can hear it properly on the Audi R8 V10 Plus), so it’s still getting better.
All lights illuminate the environment authentically. The dashboard fully illuminates, so you can see the glow of the buttons in the control panel above the rear-view mirror and you can see the reflections in the windscreen and the driver’s window. Similarly, you’ll notice that the brake light illuminates the car’s active spoiler in the first two laps. Hopefully this will draw your eye away from the glitch with the car’s tyre smoke (which is missing) and excessive anti-aliasing on the Audi’s bevelled rear window frame… which we are of course still developing.
The reflector lights (cats eyes/snake eyes) on the safety barriers surrounding the track reflect light authentically too. You can see this most clearly at 02:30.
Ghost cars (and opponent cars) are all fully realised in the rear-view mirrors, but there’s currently a small glitch that makes them render incorrectly when the sun goes down. This will be improved by launch.
The crowds release balloons throughout the race. The balloons should react authentically to the wind and light up correctly at night – and appear less frequently too – but the game is still in development after all.
There’s a tiny portal to another dimension (aka a glitch in the world) at 0:32. We’ve fixed it in the game already.
The sky is clear of clouds so that you can see the stars twinkling up above. This won’t always be the case; you can choose how clear or cloudy the sky is when you set-up a race and it will be uniquely generated every time. On the occasions when the fog rolls in and you can only see the tips of those mountains in the distance… and the cars in front are casting long shadows towards you as the sun rises or sets on the horizon… and you’re breezing through it all 150mph… it’s utterly sensational!
Love their honesty.
Ill check out the 1080p version once its available. I've gone from "yeah ill try it as its free" to "hmmmm that's looking better and better each time I see it".

I am a little bit worried about Kinect.
I’ve just spent 10 minutes being scanned into Kinect Sports Rivals. I’m not sure if it’s working correctly. The only feedback I am being given is from a Microsoft rep to my right. He’s politely giving me instructions when the Kinect (for some reason) stops the scan.
“Take a step forward.”
“Take a step back.”
“Maybe just tilt your head a little bit left.”
After this laborious effort (which I’m assured will be streamlined before launch) Kinect Sports Rivals goes through the process of translating the information into a virtual representation of me. As it does its calculations I ask myself, ‘if this is difficult with a Microsoft representative guiding me step by step, how difficult will it be for a ten year old in the comfort of his or her own home, or parents who’ve never used a console before?’
On more than one occasion its voice recognition, being demonstrated by a Microsoft rep from the US with an American accent, needed three or four repeats of ‘Xbox Home’ to do what a single button press could have done in half a second.
Here’s a summary of the most relevant points:
While being always online is not necessary, a network connection is important to fully enjoy the features of the PS4.
The PS4 will initially act as a stand-alone web server for the PlayStation App. In the future there’s the possibility of this to be expanded through the cloud, with the PS4 and PlayStation App interacting through the cloud, allowing cooperative play between multiple players.
The secondary chip for ultra-low power operation will mostly activate at night from 1 to 4 AM and download any required update automatically. It will also activate when software is purchased through external means like the PlayStation App.
Power consumption will vary greatly depending on the performance of the game played.
The noise level of the console during operation is generally much lower than it was on the PS3.
The PS4′s cooling fan has a low noise level and stepless speed control (meaning that it will increase its speed to match heat smoothly and not in sudden steps like the one on the PS3).
Since the Blu-Ray player is 6x instead of 2x (like the one on the PS3 was), the spinning noise is actually louder. Ito-san feels it’s not annoyingly louder and it will be countered by caching data on the hard disk drive. It’ll be mostly audible during the initial spin-up.
The Audio/Video performance (for movies and music) of the PS4 will target PS3 levels at launch, but will be improved through updates, for instance with the addition of 4K, as Sony is also an Audio/Video company.
The theme of the PS4 is “Personalization”, meaning that it will offer an experience tailored to each individual.
We’re really happy to confirm that two PlayStation 4 bundles will be launching alongside Killzone: Shadow Fall in Europe this November.

Next-Gen Opinion:
Looks:
Out of the two consoles the XBOX ONE IMO def looked a lot better than the PS4, the XBOX looked like it would look really nice placed under the TV and does look pretty good, the PS4 though looks like a really cheap piece of matte plastic similar to the PS3 slims, it looked damn awful.
Controllers:
Dispite looking really ugly the PS4 controller was very nice to hold and felt it was a very nice controller, IMO it felt the best of the next gen controllers. The Xbone controller felt pretty much the same as the current Xbox controller, but was slightly more uncomfortable, but then this might be because I think the current Xbox controllers are probably the best and most comfortable controller ever released.
Graphics:
I went to the game show with 5 people and all of us thought the next gen systems were disappointing graphically (and no unlike me they are not PC players).
AC4 was better than the current gen, BF4 looked better but wasn’t breathtaking, most games looked better without ever making us go wow. Watch Dogs demo looked only slightly better than current gen PS3 games, I think this was due to maybe the games are just being quickly ported over to the next gen so they are out in time for launch, but why won’t consoles ever start using AA it makes an absolute massive difference.
I would put this down to the fact that the games I saw and played were just rushed ports to get the games out in time for release.
Forza 5 was probably the best looking of all the driving games I played, but TBH it didn’t look much better than GT6.
Games Played:
FIFA 14 Next Gen:
I only played 3 games of FIFA on the next gen systems, but I thought it was better than the current gen game. The game felt slower than the current gen, first touch of players was massively improved and player impact actually looked like it was present, I defienetly felt the game was better than current gen. The only downside to it though was the AI of your players was still as completely piss poor as current gen.
The graphics were also much better than current gen and the 3D crowd looks a lot better than the iron boards in the current version – This is def a day one buy for me as it played a lot better than the current gen.
Watch Dogs:
I have very mixed feelings after watching the 15 minute play through of Watch Dogs, first of everything is pretty much hackable and looked like a very over the top Person of Interest.
The multiplayer element to it though looked pretty kl, when your playing the game there are other characters like you who will join your game and as your playing the game they can track you down and hack you and then you have to stop the hack and try and track them down.
But it felt like this game is either going to be one the best games ever released or a complete pile of shite, as just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should.
Assassins Creed 4:
Played this on both PC and PS4 and it felt pretty much the same as every other Assassins Creed game. In the demo you had to raid a castle so you started on a ship, so I got to try the new ship combat system which has been added to the game this year, during this it took a while to get used to it but after dying on my first attempt, 2nd time round I got the idea of it and was pretty simply after that.
I also stood and viewed people playing lots of other games on current gen and next gen, including BF4 on next gen.
The next gen version of BF4 looked better than current gen, but the biggest improvement on BF this year is that the next gen players get the PC game and not the god awful current gen game.
