Microsoft Xbox 360

I didn't think Cores had HDMI connections but somebody above said they did, so you should be okay as long as you get the latest batch (I was told when looking for Premiums that as long as it says LOT: 734 or LOT: 735 on the label on the side, it would be the latest chipset with HDMI etc. - I can confirm that is true, and I assume the same applies for Cores).

I would only settle for VGA or HDMI to be honest with you, I had component for ages and didn't notice anything wrong with it but when I tried a VGA cable... Jesus Christ... It was like I'd been playing with an old man's glasses on. Unbelievable how blurred it was before.

ONLY the new Core Arcade system has the HDMI. The older ones like I had of course dont. Nor do the old premium ones but the newer ones shipping soon will all have HDMI. The Arcade system wont come with a HDMI Cable as standard though.

Well I'll check my 360 (although I'm pretty sure it has no HDMI input) and ask if the TV we're getting is compatible with the VGA cable when we pick it up tomorrow.

IIRC the TV is a Palladine HD Ready 32", obviously it's the lowest quality HD Ready we could find as it's going to be our backup TV, costs $880SG or £294

Model might be this one http://www.palladine.com/products_details.asp?series=majestic
Palladine EPT3230

If you had bothered your arse to look up the technical data sheet you would see it has a PC Input, thus VGA, your sorted mate. ;)

Built-in HD DVD drive for Xbox

Self-described Australian "lifestyle technology guide" Smarthouse is citing "a senior Toshiba executive in Singapore" as saying that Microsoft and Toshiba are working on a new Xbox 360 with a built-in HD DVD drive. "An Xbox with a built in HD DVD drive is critical. They and we are working on it," the unnamed executive told the site, adding that the system might have Toshiba branding rather than Microsoft (Panasonic Q, anyone?). As if that weren't enough, the article also hints at the possibility of wireless networking, an HDTV tuner and and MP3 player dock for the super-system, which would at the point probably have the MSRP of a small house.

This isn't the first time that rumors of an internal HD DVD drive for the 360 have leaked out, and it's just as hard to give them much credence now. The HD DVD-free system is soundly beating the Blu-ray equipped PS3 in sales and the $179 external drive is already serving the smallish segment market that wants high-def movies. Then again, with Blu-ray movies threatening to run away with the high-def movie crown and developers saying additional storage space is a must, maybe Microsoft is finally ready to make a strong move toward the format.

Or maybe not. According to Smarthouse, the new device won't be announced until late 2008 or even the January 2009 CES. We're not holding our breath but we're not exactly ignoring the possibility either.

Toshiba Working On HD DVD Xbox 360?
A pretty convincing rumor reports that Microsoft is teaming up with Toshiba to make a new Xbox 360 to compete with Sony's HD-enticing Blu-ray PS3. Here are the potential proposed specs that would come standard in the new device:

- HD DVD
- 1080p w/HDMI (doesn't sound much different)
- Wireless Networking
- dual HD tuners with program guide (no dvr?)
- MP3 player dock (possibly a new open standard ala ipod...won't happen, Zune is USB)
- Toshiba is also exploring a 40-inch TV that can dock the 360
- This same TV dock could allow for more hard drive or component swappability
- Expected in late 2008 or CES 2009

So we ended up not getting the model we planned to get, we went to a store called Harvey Norman to grab the VGA cable and they had a Sirius 32" HD Ready for $799 (about £235) the panel is LG and the quality really impressed us, got it home and set up now and it looks sweeeeeet, briefly tried the 360 and the game's look so much better than on CRT :)

Specs for the TV we got:

PAL B / G, D / K, I + SECAM L / L" with Teletext

1366 x 768 Pixels Screen Resolution (WXGA)

6ms Transfer Time

16: 1 Contrast ratio

500 CD / sq. Meter Brightness

178 / 178 Degree Viewing Angle

PIP / PBP / POP5

HDMI & HD Ready

NICAM / Stereo Sound System

AV Input & PC Interface

In the 360 settings I didn't find anything to choose like 788p or 1080i or such, all I could find is where you choose the resolution, is that normal?

On a VGA cable you can only select resolutions. 1360x768 is what I have on and it's fab, if you can use the one up from that you're a lucky son of a gun (my TV doesn't support it).

"to play this disc put it in an xbox 360 console" - Keep getting this now after just completeing halo3. WTF?

Is my xbox knackered?

Okay, my third 360 is on the blink. First one was banned without being modded, second one started saying discs were unreadable and quitting to the dashboard, third one is crunching discs (honest to God you should hear the noises) and now every 2nd/3rd time I turn it on the screen is covered in rainbow-coloured flashing lines, with the screen jumping on occasion.

So, what do I do? I'm reliably informed that if I take it to Tesco (even though it's a replacement from Microsoft and I have no receipt) they won't ask for a receipt and I'll get an exchange. I'm thinking of asking to exchange it for an Elite and paying an extra however-much-quid, even though I don't need one - I just need something more bloody reliable. This is getting ridiculous.

What options do I have?

Who told you this tesco trick chris? Mine seems to have fucked up now, thinking of doing that if game dont entertain me. I have the reciept from game, i got it on the 31st dec 05. Will they do anything for me? I got it from the bootle one too, they were a lot nicer than the wigan twats. Gonna call them 2moro

I don't know if the chap will want his name mentioning since it's technically illegal, but it was someone on my MSN list who I believe has done it before. Depends who you get though, if you get some 50-year-old bint then you'll get away with it, if you get some dickhead looking to be manager in a month you're screwed.

To be honest, you're best to ring Microsoft, who will replace it and they'll do it for free. Only thing is that you'll either get it fixed (which is great) or a refurb (which, in my experience, will last three months - but you can get them replaced again and again and again for three years from the purchase date, i.e. 31st Dec 08).

So game wont do anything for me? I want an elite now :D.

As it happens its loaded halo again after a few "smacking" sessions, shall we say :)

It will fuck up again though when I try to play it 2moz. Best get it sorted I suppose.

Mine went again yesterday and i fixed it this morning but its gone again

I think ill just get it reballed for £75 which will sort it out

Should I get an Elite or a PS3?

I'm leaning towards the Elite right now because of the better games & Live, but will the 360 be able to stand up to the PS3 spec's in the last few years of this generation of consoles?

You have to find an Elite first.

360 more games. PS3 loads of game out from this week. Only exclusive new GREAT 360 game out this xmas is Mass Effect

Each have strengths & weaknesses. PES smoother apparently on 360 but PS3 region free so you can buy any WE & ANY game released.

They're hard to find then? They've got them in stock on amazon.com

I haven't seen anything on the PS3 that's made me want to go out and get one yet. I don't care about PES cos I'll be playing that on PC anyway.

So game wont do anything for me?
They said to me, if it's over a year since the purchase then they won't touch it, so I think Microsoft is your best bet.

And I wouldn't bother with an Elite to be honest, you can download all your TV shows etc. on the PC, and game-saves will never, ever take up 120gb...

OK So I phoned microsoft and theyre saying its £65 to pick it up and repair it!!!

Fuck that, what the fuck is going on? He said the 3 year warranty is only for the red lights. Bullshit man who do i complain to?

What? That's not right, surely? A three year warranty is a three year warranty...

I'd ring them again and tell them you've got the three red lights.

Well they have given me a reference number...so if I do that they may already have my problems that I rung up about before...and when they test it and get no red lights may keep it till I pay up!

Anyway, after ringing the consumer advice line, the very kind woman sent me a letter to fill in and send to GAME. Under the sales of goods act 1979 they should repair or replace the damaged products :)

well, it finally happened to me - got the dreaded 3 red lights. typical, just as i was about to embark on a pes2008 marathon!

i bought it off ebay, second hand at the start of the year, so i guess i'm gonna have to buy a new one now... :(
