Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

I just heard a little story on MUTV from one of the commentators, Paddy Crerand (ex Man Utd player).
When the team went to Asia, the MUTV commentators went too and as usual, upon their arrival, they were greeted by many Man Utd fans.
Then apparently, Bayern Munich arrived at the same airport and Paddy Crerand saw loads of Man Utd fans crowd around Ballack and they all asked him "so, when are you coming to Man Utd?". At that moment, Ballack started laughing as if he'd never heard about any of the rumours.

So I think at the moment, the Ballack deal isnt happening.

Anyone have any concern that Owen will have spent 10 years of his football life hating man united? I know he's the 'model professional' but being at Liverpool thats just ingrained into you from when you arrive, and for him that was at a very young age. Has he ever actually expressed any desire to be at Old Trafford?

That doesnt matter to proffesional footballers, Ian Rush was gonna move to OT when he left Juve in 88, he wasnt arsed about his LFC connections he admitted himself that he would have joined us in a heartbeat.

Bayern confirm United talks

Bayern Munich have confirmed they have held talks with Manchester United, but not over Germany international midfielder Michael Ballack.

The Red Devils have been linked with the 29-year-old with Kleberson tipped to leave Old Trafford while Roy Keane is nearing the end of his illustrious career.

Bayern and United shared the same accommodation in the Far East and when their paths crossed Ballack's name was not mentioned by the Premiership giants.

Ballack is being tipped to leave Die Bundesliga and move abroad, although the experienced campaigner has not ruled out seeing out his career with Bayern.

"While in Japan, Manchester United shared the same hotel as us and this led to interesting conversations," explained manager Uli Hoeness.

"But not over Michael Ballack. They did not even make an enquiry."

Ballack has just 12 months remaining on his deal with the Allianz Arena club and could sign a pre-contract with interested parties come the New Year.

Bayern are determined to retain the former Bayer Leverkusen star and are awaiting his reply after offering him a new lucrative long-term deal.

"We've made our offer," said chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "Now we're waiting for an answer. "The talks with Ballack and his advisor were very comfortable and fair. We are putting no pressure on him."

United rule out move for Owen
Manchester United have no plans to sign Michael Owen from Real Madrid, well-informed sources close to Old Trafford have told The Daily Telegraph.
Despite fevered speculation that a deal to link up Owen with Wayne Rooney was inevitable, United have joined Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in ruling out a move for the unwanted England striker.

Speculation that United might make a move for Owen heightened at the weekend following comments by chief executive David Gill that if Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to buy a leading player then the money was available.

That was interpreted as a green light for United to buy Owen, but sources close to the club say it was a general statement indicating that the new owners, the Glazer family, had not put a block on spending.

Owen clearly wants to move from Madrid. He has not established any long-term roots in the city, does not speak the language and the arrival of two new Brazilians, Julio Baptista and Robinho, means he could now be the fifth-choice striker at Real, a long way behind the front runners, Raul and Ronaldo.

Last season Owen made only 26 starts, coming on as substitute in 19 other matches, and scoring a total of 16 goals. With the World Cup coming up he needs to be sure of a more regular place.

Even before the end of last season, approaches were made on Owen's behalf to English clubs about a possible move and Chelsea were one of the clubs sounded out but showed no interest. Arsenal's Arsene Wenger is an admirer but has said he does not consider signing Owen a priority and, in any case, might not be able to afford him.

While Real might sell Owen for around £10 million, providing them with a £2 million profit on what they paid Liverpool last season, there are Owen's considerable wages, which are believed to be near £5 million a year, to be taken into account.

Such an outlay would be a deterrent to any English club, even United where it could upset the wage structure and cause complications in the ongoing efforts to persuade Rio Ferdinand to extend his present contract, which runs out in two years' time.

There has been talk that if no English club are interested in Owen on a permanent basis then the only possibility of a return to the Premiership would be a loan to Liverpool. Yet this, too, seems unlikely and Rafael Benitez, the manager, last night declared he had no intention of exploiting his club's option to re-sign their former striker.

"I am looking for a centre-back and not a centreforward," said Benitez, who wants cover for Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia and has already spent £7 million on Southampton striker Peter Crouch. "He [Owen] is a good player, a nice boy, but only he can talk about his future because I only prefer to talk about our own future."

Benitez also fiercely defended his club after Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said that Steven Gerrard would live to regret his decision to stay on Merseyside.

"Steven will win more trophies here, maybe soon," he said. "I like to hear Mourinho talking about us. I don't like to talk about other clubs but when people talk about us it means we are important to them - we'll be a more dangerous team next season."

Even without Owen, who now faces another miserable season in Spain.

BERLIN -- Germany captain Michael Ballack has not agreed to join Manchester United and is still weighing his options, his agent told German sports agency SID on Tuesday.
British newspaper The Guardian said earlier that United had lined up midfielder Ballack, named Germany's player of the year for a third time last week, to join them next season.

The paper said United had agreed that he would sign a pre-contract agreement at Old Trafford in January.

Ballack's agent, Michael Becker, told SID that United had made an inquiry through an intermediary but that he himself had not talked with United about Ballack and therefore not discussed any possible move.

"Michael Ballack is facing the most important decision of his career. Why would he prematurely sign in England if we haven't even spoken with the Italians and Spanish?" Bayern Munich declined to comment on the report. The club are encouraging Ballack to sign an extension to his contract which runs until July 2006.

Bayern chief Franz Beckenbauer urged Ballack to sign an extension as soon as possible.

"Ballack has all the trump cards in his hand. I would seize the chance now and not wait too long.

"Who knows what will happen in a year? Perhaps you get an injury and cannot play in the (2006) World Cup that everyone's watching," he told Bild newspaper.

Bayern's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said Ballack would be ill-advised to move to United.

"(They are) not the Manchester of before. If I were a player, I would laugh about it," he told Sport-Bild magazine.

So yesterday, Owen & Ballack! Today, neither! Yay!

...

As with most summers, you always get this.

With Ballack as good as he is he's only got two three years at the top, Fergie should have (okay he tried) to address this years ago, for me we should go for Jenas, he's a class act.

I'd really like to see Owen at OT but only if the team gets balance, theres four very good strikers at the club at the mo with Ole (hopefully) returning in October.

Heinze Makes Long-Awaited Return

Gabriel Heinze completed an impressive 45 minutes for United's Reserves against Wrexham on Tuesday night - his first appearance for the club in three months.Ricky Sbragia's side, which also included Phil Neville, Liam Miller and Kleberson, won 3-1 at the Racecourse Ground for Kevin Russell's testimonial match.Heinze got his first start for the club since 24 April, when an ankle injury against Newcastle ended his debut season with the club prematurely. The Argentine full-back did not travel on the team's pre-season tour of Asia because Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to give the defender an adequate rest following his involvement in the Confederations Cup in June. The 27-year-old's performance on Tuesday night did little to suggest it was his first game of pre-season. The quality and whole-hearted determination that saw him voted Supporters' Player of the Year shone through in a comfortable win for the Reds.Gerard Pique, a player very much in the mould of Rio Ferdinand, and Phil Bardsley, gritty and strong in the tackle but also comfortable with the ball, both impressed in the centre of defence.Giuseppe Rossi fired United in front with a sweet strike from the edge of the box. Liam Miller then made it 2-0 with a simple tap in after some excellent work from Rossi's strike-partner Kenny Cooper.Danny Williams pulled one back for the home side just before half-time, scrambling the ball in from a corner, but United were always in control of this game.Fraizer Campbell, an 18-year-old striker who was top scorer in United's Academy last season, came off the bench to complete the victory.

Starting line-up: Steele; P. Neville, Bardsley, Pique, Heinze; Heath, Miller, Jones, Kleberson; Rossi, Cooper.

Jones on loan move to Preston
Wednesday, August 3, 2005

"I spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson when I came back after the month break and he was keen for me to go on loan somewhere this season. Preston is the perfect club for me. It's is a great club and I'm delighted to be here. Beckham has come here before and, hopefully, I can do what he did. He did well here and went back and had a big impact at Manchester United. The club did really well last season and my dad followed the club as a kid, so I know a lot about them. I hope to improve individually as a player and give the team some success and hopefully get Preston into the Premiership."

Jones is one of the better ones to come thru recently, hopefully this loan move will give him the chance to improve.

big kenny is coming along okay, have you seen his goal from the half way line, literally from the kickoff!!

I think Rossi will beat him to the 1st team though cos the lad is talented.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Phil better stay. Too good to let him leave. We made a mistake with Butt.

I see Butt has gone to Birmingham for the year. It seems that these players who have been at United since they were kids, do have a hard time adjusting elsewhere (possible exception:Beckham?). Kind of feel sorry for them, but not on 20-30 grand a week.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

United won 6-1, conceeded off a 'dodgy penalty'. Ruud got a hat trick, good stuff. Bad news, Ronaldo and Rooney both picked up knocks on right ankles, no one knows how serious though. Better not be a big deal. Apparently we demlolished them, but they're young and inexperienced, so not a great win by any means. All comes down to this time next week...wonder where I can find the game on TV.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

I'm happy about Ruud increasing his confidence. A goal is a goal for a striker, no matter who you score against.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Ian Rush has apparently said that Owen should move to Man Utd too. This is a transfer just waiting to happen. Sir Alex would be mad to turn this down.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread - Owen wants move!

Fingers crossed for Owen then :)

Owen and Rooney- could be great for United and England, mind you- not that likely they'll be up front together, at least "officially" (by which i mean Rooney is everywhere- and not in a bad way!)
