Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

The only problem I see with the idea is that I can imagine him being one of those players that will develop under us and when he's the huge superstar he can potentiall be, he'll say he wants to join Real Madrid.

Ah, but you see, you run the risk of this happening with signing any great player. The reality is you cannot expect every player to have a secret dream about playing for United. To show as much passion and desire alike the fans - To love the club as if it was their own local club

The truth is players coming from abroad from another footballing culture, may very well dream of something else different than United and Manchester later down the line. To some, playing for a club is just to make ends meet to take care of the family or is just a journey through the path of their life - a mere stepping stone, to further glories.

Furthermore, you can buy their skills, give them their fame and provide the stage for them to perform - However you can never truly buy their deepest dreams and aspirations or desires which always fluctuates between one's lifespan. The only thing you can hope for, is that the club can make an impression ever so great, to convince them that they can live in another dream, one beyond any amongst their wildest they've ever had.

Yeah but somehow you wouldnt get that feeling with a player like Messi. I cant exactly put a finger on it but there are some players who have a certain quality where you feel he'll be around for a long time.
Evra's one of those for us. He seems to understand what it means to be a United player more than most of the guys at out club.
Balotelli seems like the opposite for some reason. But other than that, he seems like another Ronaldo in the making. IMO, he's showing more promise as a striker at his age than Ronaldo did as a winger at the same age. And Mario has the physique and everything to back him up, just like Ronaldo does.
On second thoughts, the idea of him linking up with Rooney might be deadly.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

He'd be awesome across the front-line playing on the right or left in Europe.

Anderson and Hargreaves are so important the latter I have close to zero hopes for and needs replacing or we hold out for Pogba. Anderson I think just needs time, I think SAF sees him as a modern day Scholes replacement (im not entirely sure on it) from deep. I think for the league our "4-4-2" is fine for know and the future but when going 4-3-3 in Europe we need that extra creative spark desperately.

You only happen to see that with Messi because he is at a club and country he loves and its returned ten fold back by fans and representives at the club who appreciate his value. Messi also appreciates what the club have done for him as they were the only club willing to pay for his hormone treatment medicine. when he was playing Argentinian club Newell’s Old Boys - neither they or his family could keep up with payments of 150,000 per year. Only Barca were willing to take the gamble and give him the opportunity.

Compared that to Balotelli where is at a club and country that treats him like scum and doesn't guarentee him first team football or select him for the national team. Do you really expect him to be repaying his club with any loyalty or affection if they are always criticising him for his reactions to racism?

It's near impossible to jugdge on whether any player will settle and stay loyal at any new club. Considering you have to take into account a new lifestyle and culture change that they have to adapt to. That's not to mention if they have family who are either satisfied or discontented. It's never black and white and we shouldnt be concerned in whether he'll be a die hard United fan come the end of his stint. Should he sign, of course.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I like this new shirt. Looks like something I can wear out.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

If Hargreaves was fully fit, I might not have been so worried about next season. We only need one signing and from the looks of it, we wont be getting it.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Not only that but had Carrick had a good season last time round, we probably wouldn't feel short in that central midfield area.

Can only wait and see what unfolds.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

He's said nothing wrong and he didn't rule out making a signing either. we personally only need 1 player IMO and were only 15 days into the window so theirs a while to go.

Players like Obertan, Macheda, Cleverley, Welbeck need games and should play their parts and our the core future of the side.

My take on it is with no signing this current lot are good enough to win the league but not good enough in Europe but with 1 signing that could change

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Don't think we need a holding midfielder, despite all the injuries we still had the best defence in the league last season, if there's one thing we need it's someone to create openings for us in tight matches and give us an extra bit of magic in the final third.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Tbh I thought if it wasn't for Carrick's poor performance last season we would've gone far, probably won the EPL and CL. His mistakes has cost United badly. If he goes back to perform as good as the seasons before, then I'm with you, but we can't be so sure based on his last year's performances.

I quite liked Uruguay's Perez, think that's his name. Quite solid.

If we're looking at creativity in the middle, who do you think can take up that role? As in someone United can afford and make full use of.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

We do need a Fletcher backup since im not convinced Hargreaves will play again unless we feel Carrick is good enough for a season and Pogba can make the jump 1 seasons down the line which would be optimistic. But more importantly as Jumbo said we need a creative spark from into the final third.

a few have been mentioned such as Ozil, Sneijder and Pastore, I think SAF doesn't agree with us though and I reckon he's more interested in getting a forward.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

SAF said yesterday that he's going to unleash the next crop of youngsters this season, so we probably won't bring anyone else in - unless it's a smokescreen.

I think we could only afford Joe Cole (as he's free!), unless he's greedy on wages, though he looks likely to go to Spurs. As Sneijder is a no-go, I'd be happy to see Meireles or Coentrao come in. Meireles could be that spark, and Coentrao would push Evra, Giggs & Nani...

If nobody comes in, then I think Olly Norwood, Corry Evans & Magnus Eikrem could play a role in midfield.
Ando is due back in September, and Obertan & Macheda should feature more.
Smalling will probably start the season on the bench in place of J.Evans, as he'll be filling in for Rio if he isn't fit.
Rooney is likely to be rested for one, if not a couple, of games, so it'll most likely be Berba up top on his own(yay...) with Kiko & Hernandez in support. I'm not counting Owen until he's back on the pitch. In the meantime he goes into the magic cotton wool padded hiding place with Mr Hargreaves.

So on that note, I think we have a decent chance again this year, providing we can avoid another injury crisis. Not sure about the CL though...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

On the Balotelli subject, I've heard on the news that he isn't interested in both Man Utd and City's offers and wants to stay in Italy to continue his studies in University.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I can't see any of them playing a part in the first team, maybe Eikrem who impressed in the reserves early on last year but I doubt any of them are good enough to make the grade. Midfield wise I think Pogba looks a real stand out talent and with his physique could become a squad member at 17/18. Petrucci looked good in the academy but needs to do the same for the reserves where he only played a few games. I expect big things from Anderson next season as I think our midfield hinges on it for the near future, at the least rotating constantly with Scholes this year and ready to start from the off next.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah I was expecting Norwood to get released this summer but I suppose they're giving him another year as he does have some good technique on him, I just don't know if he could cut it for us. Eikrem I'm not sure about either, he's got a decent shot on him but again not sure if he's first team potential really.

Cleverley is the most likely of the current crop to play regularly I think, he scored in that friendly against Valencia preseason and looked good and really impressed on loan at Watford so with his new contract I think out of all of them (bar Kiko etc who've already played) he'll get the most game time. He could even be the answer to the creativity problem?! Stranger things have happened!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I wouldn't bet against that - you could be onto something seeing as he played on the left wing quite a bit for the reserves last year.

With our young midfielders they've got a chance. Look at Gibson. I know he scored in the CL, but at times I thought he wasn't quite ready. Eikrem seems quite tidy, but seemed to trail off a bit at the end of the season.

Keep an eye out for Josh King as well. Could be our next secret striker...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah he's another that looks good and has already had a chance in the Carling Cup so I definitely expect to see more from him.

While we're on the subject, what kind of Gambian/Noggie name is Josh King!?!?! He sounds like he's from here.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Lovely finish from Berba. Hope there's more to come.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

A Berbagoal, 2 Berbassists and a BerbaMoM performance.

Scholes would've stolen the show if he'd played in the second half as well though, same with Giggs, they were both majestic.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah Berbatov was brilliant but he's done this before while then getting bombarded from pillar to post by fans. Obertan impressed me but he still needs to work on finishing/crossing along with Welbeck who was impressive in his cameo.

What about that first half backline then, If things go as they meant to (with football they never do though) then "Fabio--Evans--Smalling--Rafael" Will probably be their for the next 10+ years. Smalling looks a talented kid but has some silly mistakes in him which he'll get slated for but generally looks a good talent.

What worried me (and made me also realise what a genius we have) is the first half with Scholes and the 2nd half without him, Sensational player and we really need Anderson to step up whenever he returns.

I think its evident to see that our youth is very impressive and hopefully they continue to improve. :))

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I thought Smalling played well. The penalty was harsh, the forward made such a meal out of it and went flying down after Salling brushed across his arm which kinda ruined his debut for him. He looked shaky for a bit after that with a few panicked hoofs upfield when before he'd been bringing the ball forward and playing it into the midfield. I think that's why SAF left him on until the end so he didn't feel like he'd be taken off for the error.
