Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Whatever the case, Rooney has time on his side to far surpass Gerrard's career and earn many honours at club and international level.

I hope SAF builds the team around him now, in a similar way that we did when Ronaldo was here and how you guys do with Gerrard, because then we'll definitely get the best out of him.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

You Pool fans make me laugh, so uptight all the time. One of you started it by saying Gerrard was better, then that he was a better finisher, yet whenever something comes back you start all your eye rolling and making out we're talking stupid and being argumentative just cos it's going against what you say.

I know it's hard but try smiling once in a while.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

:D

Hopefully the tabloids wont be using "blast" this season when a manager says something. Thats what I thought when I read about manu and blast, I thought; "Old red nose is at it again".

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Haha Abhi started all this, but it doesn't matter we were only messing, it's just a bit of banter. It doesn't make any difference who's better anyway does it?!

Nice words about Owen.

Haha, it was just a bit of banter.

Just my opinion, Gerrard's a better player now, and it remains to be seen if Rooney can step up when he's the main man in the team (which will be this season).

Agree about Owen. Cunt of the highest order, but he will get you goals regardless. As a squad player, you can't ask for much more I guess. I'd have personally hoped we signed someone similar like Trezeguet as well. Still, we have enough strikers as it is.

Oh, and Real Madrid are gobshites. We can agree on that.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Nice to see Owen score again. I reckon he'll have a great season if he can stay away from injuries. Macheda looked good as well, and he's only 17. He could turn out to be a great striker in a few years.

Tosic on the other hand has been pretty disappointing again. He's like a poor version of Nani, which is something. Only thing he has for himself is that he's left footed. I don't think he'll ever make it at United. With only three natural wingers to pick from (Nani, Park and Valencia), maybe SAF can pull another Michael Owen and get Beckham back for free. :P Seen on the news that he's not getting along well with Galaxy fans.

Yeah I didnt think you were being arsey anyway mate. I've got no problem with you coming in here and saying Gerrard is better than Rooney, I'm quite happy to debate it and prove that you're wrong anyway ;). When Dags does his :BRICK::ROLL: smilies and tries to make out we're just being dicks and Kev says it's no wonder people think United fans are cunts I start to remember why everyone thinks Liverpool fans are miserable, deluded chumps with no sense of humour. :WOOT: ;)

Oh, and Real Madrid are gobshites. We can agree on that.
Yeah I'll give you that.

I didnt see the game cos I was at work but it seems Owen was quite involved and I'm glad he got another goal. I'm hoping he proves all the doubters wrong and has a good season, which i think he will.

The match report on the offical site seemed to say Tosic was quite involved, what makes you think he's so bad? He's been good in the reserves and remember he's only been with us 6 months. Saying that I do think he looks a bit overwhelmed whenever he's around the other lads, especially when you look at Macheda for example who seems totally at home, but I guess they're just different characters.

That's ridiculous considering Tosic has got a much better football brain than Nani. He's a more economical passer, a much better crosser and a useful set-piece taker. We'll have to wait and see if he makes it to the first team but writing him off at this stage is crazy.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I know it's harsh to write a player off after only seeing him play 4 or 5 matches for United, but I can't help feeling this way. His passing has been poor today, though better than on Saturday, and his dribbling was unimpressive against a poor Malaysian side. I can't imagine how it'be like against a PL side. He did put in 2 or 3 good crosses but most of the time it ended up being disappointing. I'm sure he can prove useful though as we don't have a lot of people who can put good crosses using the left foot. He also seems to struggle to keep possession and lost quite a few balls. I was also shocked to see how small he is. That may be a huge problem for him, especially in the PL.

Now, I hope that he proves me wrong but at the moment he's nothing more than Carling Cup material. Like one of the commentator repeated (don't know his name, I don't usually watch MUTV), it didn't happen for him today. I just don't remember when he ever showed glimpses of raw talent.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

well I won't write off Tosic yet....as Jumbo says, he has just been with us for 6 months...

but I do agree that a lot of his crosses were poor, and the way he does those step-overs again and again to the point where the Malaysian defender just knew what he was gonna do will not help him at all in the EPL. I'll say that he'll be Carling, FA Cup used mainly and some league matches for rotation or injury purposes...

But seeing the humidity of Malaysia and how most of the players are still out of shape, not much can be said but i do admire Rooney's determination to score...don't mind shoving anyone in the way for that matter...and Owen's willingness to run even to help in defense before even carrick got back....

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

That last effort from Owen in the clip summed up exactly what we've been missing for years. Way too many times have seen crosses and passes fly into the box without someone attacking the ball like that.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Nice one for getting the highlights Bing.

Looks like Owen's already having more luck than he had in four years at Newcastle.

Nice to see Kiko getting a goal as well, but it's interesting, if that'd happened in a Prem match, would he have taken the touch? Did he know he had all that time against Malaysia, or could he simply not hit it first time?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

If only we had Owen and Ronaldo with us...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Seriously lads we need to stop mentioning CR9 (;))) HE'S A MADRID PLAYER KNOW!

Anyway. I think Owen's started well, he seems very eager to impress which is great. I think the Audi Cup should be good. We'll see probably the team that will start on the opening day and it will be against a top side like Boca and Milan/Bayern.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Tosic had some very nice crosses. With his ability and Owen's finishing, we could be seeing a lot of goals from those two alone.

Macheda's goal was also well taken, good to see the young lad kept his cool and didn't rush it.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

@what Matherto was saying about whether he would get away with the extra touch in the Premier League or whether he knew he had the time.
Maybe I'm underestimating him but at his age not many people could judge that he had as much time as he did. If you ask me, he probably took that extra touch cuz he needed it, not because he knew he'd get away with it.
I may be wrong and maybe he really is as good as the finish made him look, I dunno. Thats just my opinion.
But either way, he looked cool and under control even though he knew he's under pressure. Personally I think its harder to overcome that than bad control or finishing. And remember, he's still 17.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Great interview, And on Ronaldo returning one day? You never know :))

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2...-alex-ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he plans to use Michael Owen as little as every 10 days as he confirmed he was looking to employ the striker as an impact player at Manchester United.

Owen has begun his United career as well as he could have expected, scoring twice in two games during the champions' tour of Asia, the second coming in today's 2–0 win here over a Malaysia XI. But Ferguson indicated he saw him as support to the existing strike pairing of Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov. "We can carry Michael Owen. I won't ask him to play every four days, I might ask him to play every 10 days," the manager said. "We can do it because I always rotate my squad."

Ferguson hopes Owen might have the same influence as Henrik Larsson did in the early months of 2007, when he was brought on loan from Helsingborg. The Swede was not a regular starter but was pivotal in United's wresting back of the title after four barren years.

"They are similar players in terms of movement in the last third," said Ferguson. "Larsson was always on the move. That is a great asset to have and they don't try anything different. Larsson never did and nor does Owen. The ball comes into the penalty box and he is always there.

"It's worth the risk. Sometimes you have a punt, a bet or a gamble but there is a little bit more to him than that, having spoken to one or two players about Owen. I first tried to sign him when he was 12, so we have been waiting for this."

Like most at Old Trafford, Ferguson accepted that sooner or later Cristiano Ronaldo, whose shirt Owen now wears, would go to Real Madrid but he holds out the wistful prospect that the winger might end his career at United. The man who eight months ago said he would "not sell that mob [Madrid] a virus", spoke with almost paternal pride of what Ronaldo might achieve when reflecting on the £80m move to the Bernabéu.

"His best is yet to come because he is just 24," Ferguson said. "I will be very proud when I see [him at his best] because we had a part to play in it. He came to the right club at the right part of his career. He could have gone to Real Madrid or Barcelona as a boy but he came to the right club and he appreciates that. And he may come back, you never know.

"I don't see it happening if things go wrong at Real Madrid necessarily, but he loved Manchester United so it may happen. He loved the club. If you look at the six years he had with us, he never missed training and he was never injured. He always played. He was fantastic.

"It wasn't easy to see him leave. I had a good chat with the boy about it but he had made up his mind. Last year he was begging me to let him go but this year it was a sensible discussion.

"There is no doubt it is a huge loss. It is a challenge for us because it won't be the same without Ronaldo. He is the best player in this world of ours – by absolutely miles. He is streets ahead of Lionel Messi, streets ahead of Kaka. Look at his figures. They are unbelievable. The attempts he has had on goal, the attacks in the penalty box, his positions, his headers, his shots."

None of which will now benefit Manchester United. Ferguson has spent a quarter of the fee he received for Ronaldo and was prepared to spend almost half of it on Karim Benzema, but the weight of Madrid's money told, with the France striker also moving to the Bernabéu.

"We tried for Benzema because, at 21, I felt there would be an improvement there," said Ferguson. "He is tough, with a good physique and goalscoring record, so it was worth going a wee bit extra for him because of his age. But when it went to 42m euros, it was beyond his value. We went to 35m and I think that was fair.

"We explored signing Franck Ribery in a nice, quiet way when [the chief executive] David Gill was at one of his meetings with Bayern Munich in March. They told him: 'Absolutely no chance' and the one thing you can say about Bayern is that when they say something they mean it."

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

That interview made me smile and the best thing is...unlike most of our players that left the club,Ronaldo left on good terms, especially with Sir Alex.I mean, when was the last time the Boss heap so much praise for a player that was sold off? Would be great if he wanted to end his career at Old Trafford because thats where it started.

Huge rumours linking us today with Sergio Aguero and David Silva.Either one would join us apparently for a sum of around 40 Million. It has been revealed that we did tabled a bid of 35 Million for Benzema,I am sure that another 5 Million for a player the team really needs wont hurt.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I'd go for Silva. I dont think we need Aguero.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I'd go for neither to be honest, Silva is vastly overrated. On the other hand Aguero is the best young player in the world but we don't need a CF in his mould.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

If hargreaves is truly going to be fit soon(ish) and Fergie is confident, I don't see where we need to splash out, so we'd be better off sitting on the dosh.

CF: Rooney, Berba, Owen, Macheda, Welbeck
WF: Nani, Valencia, Park, Tosic
CMF: Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes, Hargreaves, Anderson, Gibson, Giggs
RB: Rafa, Gary, O'Schnizzle
CB: Rio, Vida, Brown, Evans
LB: Evra, Fab, O'Schnizzle
GK: VDS, Foster, Thomas

I wouldn't mind us getting a CB as 5th choice, but then, who would join to be 5th choice? Similarly, another WF would be nice, but you can't get a $20m player to sit on the bench (or you shouldn't anyway).

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Although I do not like shorty forwards...Aguero would be perfect, playing to the left or the right of our centre forward...kinda like how Tevez used to line up for us.

Sir Alex's public backing of Kiko Macheda should spur up the youngster to make the big leap this coming season. He is a hero in the making according to the Gaffer himself.

Nah we're fine at centreback I think. Rio, Vidic, Brown and O'Shea from the first team then there's a couple of kids who could step if need be (like last season). We had to sell Pique due to this so there'd be little point shelling out a load of money just for the sake of it. What's the chances of us having another injury crisis in our defense again this year? Seems an unnecessary expenditure to me.

Interesting to hear from the boss that we were interested in Benzema AND Ribery. Those kinda signing always sound like summer paper talk, although neither would look out of place at OT.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Remember that Anderson, Rooney, Obertan, Ljajic and Giggs can also play there.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Have we officially got Ljajic yet?

And are people seriously expecting him to light the place on fire?
