Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

And what are you basing that on? This clip here?

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

I'm with Rune on this one. We've always had a player like Smith in our team. Not the most skillful but will work all day and their aggression will lift the crowd. We had Hughes, Keane, Robson and going way back a personal favourite of mine, Joe Jordan.

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

That video pretty much sums up Alan Smith to be honest.I am reserved on this one.I still cant choose between the two.If I had the luxury,I'd keep Saha and Smith because I think they could really compliment each other.I cant recall a game when these two started and one of them scored. Can you help me on this Rune?

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

have they ever played WITH each other??? like together on the pitch at the same time (both being strikers)...i don't think so...

but you can say that i'm dumb, but i still think that Smith deserves to be in the Utd line-up more than Saha...(even though in WE, Saha's speed comes into better use than Smith 80% of the time! lolz)

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

I'd take Smudge over the glass man Saha any day of the week, lifts the crowd and the players, given a run in the team will also score goals for us too.

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

I think Saha is more talented in terms of physical ability e.g. finishing, pace, dribbling but Smith is a harder worker and mentally a tougher player.

Took the words out of my mouth. What made guys like Keano, Robson and Hughes so good? Its definately wasnt technique or finishing or anything. But they were fought for the team in every game they played and the fans loved it.

The second leg against Roma.

I remember a Carling Cup game where Smith scored a goal from a nice assist from Saha, so yeah they have.

You have to remember that we dont need players who are so technically gifted cuz we already have so many of those here anyway. We need more players like Alan Smith who will fight for the team. Just look at Gattuso at Milan. In terms of technique he seems so out of place in that side yet he's still a fan favourite.

Its a shame with Saha if he could keep fit and get on form and carry it on another striker wouldnt be needed in my eyes, he has good control of the ball, decent in the air and his finishing at times can be clinical, clip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xqQzyJZ4EA

Although alot of things let him down - sometimes he doesnt look bothered in a game, injuries and his 1 on 1 finishing is appauling!

you sure they both started against roma... whoa whoa now son, smith fights but its not very effective, he has a hot temper and will wreck a player every once in a while, but usually he just fouls people, gattuso is an amazing tackler and ball winner, smith isnt, so the comparison isnt the same. We tried smith at DM and he failed miserably, he couldnt tackle, he couldnt pass the ball upfield and he really didnt do much. I do like smiths hold up play and he can finish usually when he should. But i just think for him he would be better off in a side like everton, portsmouth, etc... He is never going to be a regular for united and i think he has the potential to be a great fit for another prem team

Gattuso is also a thug when he wants to be, remember the elbow in Giggs' face a few seasons ago. We need a thug sometimes or we will end up like Arsenal getting bullied every week.

I think the question was if either of them started a game and scored, not if they started together.

Of course it isnt the same, Smith is a striker, Gattuso is a midfielder. And I wasnt comparing their ability to tackle people, I was talking about fighting for the team. You can buy all the technically gifted players you want and thrash all the smaller teams with a 4 goal margin every week but the moment you come up against a strong and organised team like Milan (or Liverpool/Chelsea on their best day), you're in for a reality check. After signing Nani and Anderson, we dont need fast and skillful players or players similar to Saha. We need to start thinking about what we would do when we play a team that's tactically smarter or physically stronger than us. Until we do this, we'll probably never win the Champions League.

We tried smith at DM and he failed miserably, he couldnt tackle, he couldnt pass the ball upfield and he really didnt do much. I do like smiths hold up play and he can finish usually when he should. Again you're basing this on a player who has had serious injuries and a lack of first team football. Before Rooney came into the team, Smith was brilliant. Since then he's been moved to midfield or not had many games up front. Saha has had more than enough time to establish himself. And to be fair to him, he did well. Just not good enough by our standards.
And to add to that, Smith turned down many opportunities to join another club because of his determination to play for us. He even turned down an opportunity to play for England just so that he could train with our reserve team. If the club and the fans appreciated him as much as you do, our players wouldnt have worn t-shirts saying "For You Smudge" before lifting the Carling Cup a couple of years ago.
And to sell him without giving him a chance in the side will be like a slap in the face and would make them lose a lot of respect for the club from me. The last time I was this bothered about someone leaving was when Beckham left.

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

one fact remains, Smith can score 1 on 1 chances, Saha really can't

Saha's brilliant at converting incredibly difficult chances, bur simple ones? Not a chance

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

Nani is playing for Portugal (Under 21s) on Sky Sports 2 now if some of you want to check out your new signing. :)

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

He was shit, but so was the rest of the team. Our coach sucks. :(

Regarding Nani hes played for senior Team vs Belgium the flew to Kuwait to play. Came back had a medical with us the played tonite.

Who wouldnt be tired???

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

Its in the news that apparently Atletico Madrid will spark a transfer scramble next week by confirming that star striker Fernando Torres will be in the summer sales.Thie is great news for us and we have to move fast to capture his signature.I cant believe it that Atletico are announcing this.Their failure to secure a UEFA spot might be the cause of this announcement.BRING ON TORRES!!!

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

BRING ON TORRES!!!

 I'd drink to that (it's only tea though)
If he was the only player we signed this summer I'd have been happy... I'm not complaining though!

Fingers crossed

He's completely entitled to his opinion,It's not a racist comment, nowhere does he say anything derogatory about the french, let's not get all over politically correct in here.Personally i couldn't give a flying fuck where a player's from as long as he's good enough to wear the shirt.

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

wow...Torres...really never thought that Athletico will announce that he is for sale!!! now...if it follows through and he comes to Man Utd....wow...think of the line-up problems!!!

Liverpool will go in for him also mate.

Also remember Anderson may not get a work permit so we may have the money for Torres anyway

If i was Torres i will be thinking who would i want to play for & with?

Ronaldo, Rooney, Nani, Scholes, Giggs, Rio even Hargreaves

Or Steven Gerrard

Also managers no matter how good Rafa is, who has developed Roanaldo into the monster of a footballer he is now?

And who has shown the most intrest in him?

Easy decision for me

then why didnt he say, I dont want Trez? He said I dont want another frenchman... clear as day, why not? Why else make a comment like that unless your going to generalize about someone, why lump trez as "frenchman" unless you have something against frenchmen...
whats the point? And not only is he an idiot for saying he doesnt want another player cause of the country he is from, but he is and idiot for not wanting a top notch hold up forward like trezagaol...

this is the same guy who said ronlado and pirlo were shit

ive watched torres on a regular basis, he is a similiar player to rooney but not quite as good at finishing, im not sure about him..

Re: Manchester United Thread - Champions 2006/07

Torres is better at being the target man, the lone striker etc.

If Man Utd get him it would be unbelievable. Torres is simply awesome, I'd love to have him at Milan. Looks like we wont go for him though, its Eto'o for us.
