Manchester United Thread

look at it this way. We're 1 goal better off than we were on saturday morning so we've actually increased our advantage at the top.

You are getting confused here again. The reason I mentioned football ability is because for example 20million on a midfileder is not going to mean he is as good or going to put in the same performances as someone like Ronaldinho who would cost the same. Of course players ability, age and requirements is going to come into it when a club takes interest in a certain player. The point is how much it is going to take the get that player from the club which involves negotiations. If there was a fixed price based soley on a players ffootball ability on the pitch and how he is going to be compared to someone else who cost the same price, then there would not be any negotiations between the clubs of much they are willing to pay. You seem to think that a player who cost 20million must perform like every other player who cost the same amount, i.e your comparison to Hargreaves with Ronaldinho,RVN and Rooney.

hurray... you nailed it... minus Ronaldinho and Rooney... i rate them higher and frankly i don't think either of their respective clubs are willing to let them go for any price... I'm not talking about a fixed price because there is no such thing as a fixed price when measuring talent...

How do you think bids are formulated? Do you think that the club wanting to buy the player looks at some imaginary stats then says he is worth x amount, then Bayern look at it and accept the bid? Its always going to change due to different circumstances and the fact is there is no true worth of a player, nobody knows how much a player will cost. Bayern Munich are a big club and only a big offer is going to tempt them to accept as they do not need or want to sell. That has nothing to do with Hargreaves ability on the pitch but rather Bayerns valuation of the player and how far we United are willling to go to get that player. A couple of seasons back when his contract was running out we could of got him alot cheaper, does not mean he is a a average player ability wise because we would have spent less? No it means that because his contract was running out, Bayern would have needed to sell the player and at a reasonable price to attract buyers, otherwise he would leave on a free. Different circumstances, different prices.

ok then where does that valuation come from? a little table that reads big club to big club transfers no less than 20million? and where does that reasonable price stem from?

The money paid for a player is not a true reflection of a players ability, is that so hard to understand? Bayern would not raise it to 50million because its a unrealistic figure and would simply inflate the transfer market.

yes you are right, because teams can over estimate or under estimate a player's ability, what that player can bring to the team. but it does reflect players ability or else everyone would have a transfer fee of 5million... why are some players worth so much more in transfer fees?

If teams had to buy midfielders for 40-50million then I'm sure they would make us pay that amount because that would have been the standard price in the market. For example back in 1999-2003 players were going for silly money and most big clubs had to pay the same large sum for players. Mendieta from Velencia to Lazip 28million, Vieri Lazio to Inter 31million. CrespoParma -Lazio 36million. Figo to Barcelona-Real Madrid 37million. Man Utd had to pay Lazio 28million for Veron in that period, Rio went for 30million from leeds. If you look in this period of time, many midfielders who play for big clubs have gone for around 18-20million. Diarra Lyon to Real Madrid 18million, Essien to Chelsea-24million. You cannot tell me any of those plyers is worth those extortionate figures based on their football ability its just the amount a player cost to prise them away from their club and relates to the transfer market. If any of those players played for a smaller club maybe those prices would not come up so high and a player would cost 10million. If they are lower in price does not necessarily mean they are any less of a player than someone who cost double that

if ur asking me... i agree... i don't think they're worth that much... but Real and Chelsea do think they are worth it or else they wouldn't pay for them... you think they just throw money around for fun? who the hell wastes 25million just because they feel like it? that period of 1999-2003 is too big of a period to recognize any pattern whatsoever... there's going to be signings with large sums in every year... you can still extend that period to 2004 when Chelsea payed 24million for Drogba and 2005 when Chelsea again payed 25million for Essien...

Maybe we can wait till the summer maybe we cannot, but its better if we get him now just to make sure we are covered appropriately. If carrick or scholes gets injured we only have fletcher as a genuine cover for central midfielder. Anything can happen in a short space of time where a few injuries can hit us and the next thing you know we are having to play players out of position. Look at cheslea, no one predicted they would have a injury crisis and most people thought their team was well equipped, most pundits tipped them to win the title over the likes of United, arsenal and liverpool for their supposedly superior strength in depth in their squad. Another thing is we don't have a real defensive midfielder, Carrick can play there yes, but in my opinion he is more of central midfielder like scholes who gets forward and creates openings. 20million is alot of money but that is how much he is going to cost if we want him, its that simple. If we win titles and he plays well in his position, the price will be forgotten. Why are you so concerned about the price anyway?

heh that's the question isn't it? its not so much i care what United do... its the aftermath really... I'd really hate to see this signing inflate everyone elses transfer fees with the mentality of "o Hargreaves went for 20million, maybe we can gouge other teams for almost that much with similar talent" because frankly, i would never pay that price for Hargreaves, i find that you lot were unfairly billed for someone of his talent, or lack there of in terms of price... like RuneEdge pointed out, 15million sure I'd be willing to make that move, but 20million really is a little over the edge...

well, Ronaldo was played out of the game, and for some reason it looked at all times like they had 6 players playing just in front of our defence

we didn't play well, and Arsenal may well go on a big run now

will we drop 12 points though?

doubtful, obviously.

im happy if we take third and chelsea dont win the title again. i think we should atleast take third over liverpool.

yes of course you will drop 12 points. Arsenal are going to win the league this season. this is the beginning of the total system meltdown of MU I've been talking about all season. Ferguson has lost it as a coach. After they went up 1-0 a mate of mine at the match who is a lip reader said he put his binoculors on the head of Ferguson and read what he said to his assistant. "Build the wall, i want to switch to a 5-4-1 defensive here, put on Heinze and take off Ronaldo, lets all sit back" is what he said. Surely not what you want to hear from your manager at this point of the season, the wall is crumbling down. Rooney also said he wasn't sure if his heart was in it anymore and Neville said that bringing Laarson in has ruined the chemistry of the team.

You paid the price for sitting back and wasting time after you went ahead. It was a fairly even match but I thought we played much more positively than you after you scored and probably deserved the win. Had you been less negative and actually tried to win I don't think you would have lost.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Our fault really. We were clearly going for the 1-0 win and even when you equalised, we took Ronaldo off.

SAF says Carrick stood out the most??? I think Vidic stopped Adebayor a numerous of times in the air and fast breaks

SkySport News said:
Ferguson drew further consolation from the performance of Michael Carrick, who he felt was the best player on the pitch by some distance.

"I thought we had the best player on the pitch in Michael Carrick," he concluded. "He was magnificent."

Maybe next time Fergie will realise that Giggs, Ronaldo and Rooney as good players they clearly are would be much more effective if they played in their natural positions.
Too many times Ronaldo or Giggs cutting back to their natural foot and allowing defenders to get back rather than whipping in a quick cross which Larsson could have thrived on.

I wont let this game ruin our wonderful season so far.You are right Dermot,Fergie has lost it as a coach which is why he is still our top manager ever.Carrick,Vidic and Evra stood out last night.Evra ran his socks off but too bad he couldnt block out that cross from Eboue which lead to the winning goal.Heinze should be there by the way.I think Neville has to be blamed for both goals,we conceded.Crosses to the back post should be dealt by the centrebacks but if they fail to do so,the fullbacks have to provide cover.Neville failed to do so on both occasions, first letting van Pierse slip through and then Henry. We paid the price really and what we always do to other teams will always be twice as bitter if its done to us.Thats the winning goal in extra time.I'm sure the lads will move on,its still Arsenal we're talkin about here and they should be given credit for havin a go.Call me bitter but we are still on top, still 6 points clear.

can't exactly say we're better than united... we just match up well against them... all we can hope for now is for them to drop more points :)

well overal united are better but when matched by arsenal, we are better. we beat them twice this season

We used to do it to Liverpool, but they used to do it to all the other teams and we didn't. That's Arsenal's problem.
I don't care if you beat us 10-0 home and away as long as we win the league.

If I were a United fan (shiver) I wouldn't be too worried. Ok you lost to us home and away but you are still 6 points clear and should still win the league. I would gladly swap league positions with you ;).

What a debut by Rossi! http://www.zshare.net/download/parma-v-torino-zip.html

I'm pretty sure hes gunna request for a permanent stay in Italy in the near future. Hes been complaining about it for over a year now.

Its a shame but I have to agree with you, I dont think hes going to make in the premiership at least at this moment of time. But hes still young so theres still plenty of time left for him, I think a loan to maybe a championship side would have helped more in the process of making him suited to the english game.

He scored a couple of goals like that in the reserves here. No one has ever doubted his ability. He just doesnt get any games here, sadly. And how could you when you have Rooney, Saha, Smith, Solskjaer and Larsson?
Personally I would have sold Saha, moved Ole to midfield as backup for one of the wingers and Larsson would move on anyway, leaving just Rooney and Smith up front with Rossi and another decent striker being brought in.

I think the Premiership maybe too fast for Rossi's style? He will fit in well in Serie A I feel. Good luck to him.

As for yesterday, well done Arsenal - they were fantastic and it proved why the English Premiership is the best league in the world. At the beginning of the weekend if you'd told me United would be 6 points clear on Sunday evening I would have taken that. Also, it spices up the title race!

VIVA LE PREMIERSHIP!

So because United beat Manchester City & Fulham (who BOTH defeated Arsenal) we are a better team? It's rubbish. The best team finishes higher in the league table. That is why we have 'leagues' - to determine a team's strength, depth and character over the course of many games not just one or two.

how the fuck does that prove anything, but that it's the same teams every year who fight for the title? I love united and the prem, but that certainly didnt prove its the best league in the world.

the prem. has world wide attention why does the CL has 4 EPL teams? o.k. still it has clout...why in the US they show all prem. matches than any other league? Fan bases determine the outcome not the probability....take it easy csaunders
