Manchester United Thread

Yeah the two teams are keeping hush but he's defo having a medical, all being well the signing will be announced at a press conference this weekend.

Cheeky Bastards:

'Northampton are cashing in on their plum FA Cup draw with Manchester United by doubling their normal match-day prices for the televised January 25 clash at Sixfields.

The Cobblers will charge fans between £30 and £35 for the encounter, the first time they have entertained United in a competitive match since George Best scored six times in an 8-2 win at the old County Ground in 1970.

Although the Northampton board will justify their decision because of the limited capacity at their new stadium, which holds fewer than 8,000 fans, it is sure to attract widespread criticism.

Home fans are used to paying between £14 and £17 to watch their team in the Third Division, while the small number of United fans gaining admittance to the visitors' section face the prospect of paying more at Sixfields than they do at Old Trafford.

"We can understand why Northampton would want to maximise the revenue from this game but we feel they are being unreasonable in charging United supporters that kind of money," said Mark Longden, press officer for the Independent Manchester United Supporters' Association.

"One of the main reasons we look forward to games like this is that we get a different kind of atmosphere and match-day experience than we do at a Premier League game, including lower ticket prices.

"The prices being charged are more than most supporters paid to watch last year's Worthington Cup final at the Millennium Stadium and more than all of us pay to watch United at Old Trafford."

Good on them, Man Utd have got a cheek to call anyone money-grabbers. So another club is using Man Utd's name to make themselves some extra $$$, don't see the problem.

So you think its okay for a club to double charge their own supporters cos we're playing. Yeah they dont see the problem either

So when we're playing chelsea we double our prices cos thats what they charge, prick, give it a rest.

the only people United take money off are people who support the club, isnt that what supporters are there for, is that why you's have no money up there cos you all support with your mouths and expect a chairman to front the money out of his own pocket, I s'pose that would explain alot.

Supply and demand, Vann. The world of finance is a cruel one. ;)

Besides these are average prices for when we play the likes of Bolton and Leicester - can't see what all the fuss is about! :l

Oh but Vann, you're forever banging on about how good you are, if you're that good then the price of admission surely must be worth it?

It's like Man Utd releasing 40 kits every year, people don't have to buy them, same as people don't have to go to the Northampton game. The Northampton fans will fork out because the money will go back into their club, the Man Utd fans can be as pissed off as they want, it's good to see a smaller club take advantage of them instead of the other way around for once.

And there's no need for insults.

For small clubs, yeh. This is 'their Cup Final' after all.

yeah theres that aswell, there already gonna get a big payday of the TV though and if wasnt United they wouldnt charge, just seems wrong is all.

yeah I know how good we are, its just ticket prices arent usually reflected in the team your playing.

And if it was the other way round there would be outrage, if the tie was at OT Northampton fans would only pay a little more for the ticket than they would one of there own games.

It wasnt an insult just a pet name.....

So they're taking advantage of a money-making situation, just like Man Utd did when they punted shirt after shirt in the far-east with Beckham's name on it, when they release loads of kits each year which parents feel obligated to buy for their kids, peer pressure, etc.

People don't have to pay, they have a choice.

And ticket prices are reflected in the team you're playing, a CL ticket costs more than a league ticket, at least up here it does, I'm sure we're not the only ones.

lol yeah we're the only team to bring out multiple kits, no other team brings out as many as us and people are forced to buy them cos they have no free will.

And although ticket prices are a little dearer for Uefa comps we still pay the same whether its Madrid or Rangers, it shouldnt be any other way.

You've made my point for me, people have free will - they don't HAVE to pay the prices. As you love to point out, Man Utd are 'the biggest show in town'. Why should people be charged the same money to see them as they are for Division 3 opposition?

They're milking Utd and you're furious because it's them who will profit, not Utd. I think it's great.

Damm right we are!!

it seems to have gone over your head but our allocation is gonna be quite small so it effects the home fans more, we're already used to going to shite grounds and paying more than we do at OT just as other teams are used to coming to ours and spending less to watch the biggest club in the world.

Anywayyyyyy........

Real Madrid play in Spain.

Clever boy....

Oh I get it, you seem to have a problem making the difference between, best team and biggest club.

Madrid = arguably the best football team in the world but the overall club is always close to financial disaster cos of the way its run.

United = biggest and most recognisable club in the world of football, far from being the best on the footballing side but its without about the best run club in the business.

Hope that clears it up for you.

£30 to see Northampton beat Man Utd is an absolute bargain!!

hahaha they played okay last night, they seem to have a good attitude towards football....

The FA cups all about shocks so who knows.....

Biggest club for me means the club with the most respect, prestige, and history, as well as current standing, and it's not Man Utd.

You seem to have a problem differentiating between 'Biggest Club' and 'Largest Cash Cow'.

well we also do well in the catergories you mentioned aswell as being the largest cash cow so we dont do to bad either way you look at it.

Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand is looking forward to going back to Northampton - for more reasons than one:

Crerand will head to Sixfields for the David against Goliath FA Cup clash on January 25 in his role as pundit for MUTV eager to relive some old memories.

Not only was the Scottish midfielder part of the side which recorded the incredible George Best-inspired 8-2 fourth-round win at the old County Ground in 1970, he also spent 10 months managing the Cobblers six years later.

Severe financial constraints prevented Crerand from doing himself justice during his time in charge but he still has some good friends in the town and he is looking for the chance to chew the fat over the day George Best scored six.

"Northampton is a great place and I still have a lot of friends from my days down there," said Crerand, who played almost 400 games for United, winning the league title, FA Cup and European Cup along the way.

"United have always had a big support in the town, so tickets for the match might be hard to come by.

"The 1970 game was amazing because before the game I remember their manager Dave Bowen saying Northampton were going to lose anyway, so they might as well be adventurous and attacking.

"There wasn't the big gulf between divisions that there is now, so there was a chance we might have been beaten.

"But George had just come back from a six-match suspension and he just battered them."

Crerand could not have expected he would cut his managerial teeth with Northampton so soon afterwards and it proved to be an ill-advised move as the Cobblers were hurtling towards relegation when the Scot was ousted.

"Managers always tend to blame directors for the things that go wrong but I found it hard to adjust," said Crerand, who joined Northampton after a brief spell as Old Trafford assistant-boss to Tommy Docherty.

"The players had to keep their tie-ups, wash their own socks. In the end we couldn't even afford bandages.

"It was a world away from Manchester United but despite that I still enjoyed my time there."

Crerand's only regret is the 7,000 capacity of Northampton's new home restricts the number of fans who will get in to see the game.

"It's a pity the tie couldn't be switched, not necessarily to Old Trafford but somewhere closer to Northampton where more fans could have got in.

"They have waited over 30 years to see United and it would have been nice if more people could have seen them."

Manchester United's Communications Department has confirmed that this evenings reserve game at Birmingham has been cancelled after two of the youth team were involved in a 'serious' road accident near the clubs training ground in Carrington, West Manchester.

Not got full details on this yet....

Vann, your post earlier was put well - the Madrid and United thing. Manchester United ARE the biggest club in the world, fact. It is has been said on nearly every football programe I have watched over the last few years - they are financially the best run, God only knows (and their chief executive) how much they have in the bank and they DO have the biggest following. FACT.

The players in the crash at Carrington are Phil Marsh (flown to hospital) and Callum Flanagan (recovering at home from minor injuries).

See HERE

Here in the US, Manchester United is always at the top of "worlds richest sports team" with the New York Yankees Second and the Washington Redskins Third, I dont think Real Madrid are even in the top 10...... Manu was valued at over 1 billion US...... As for following(from a US perspective), last summer Manchester United sold out every game played here in the United States, but MLS cant even sell out the MLS cup semifinals...... In a country where football is low on the totem pole, manchester united can still sell out 80,000 plus stadiums, with ease....... ANd I hear that the following in ASIA is even stronger....

Yep, indeed you do, not as much as Real though, not by a long way, for me anyway.

This is getting silly now:

Saha on latest developments:

Thursday, January 15, 2004

"The club say they would rather sell me in six months' time but I'm fed up now. Either I leave now or I'm staying at Fulham until the end of my contract which finishes in 2006. If Fulham love me that much, they're going to have to cope with me until the end and then I'll leave them for zero euros. Fulham are not honest. The club's managers keep changing their opinion. One day they say yes to a transfer, and the next day they say no. They think I'm an object. I however feel that the road which leads to Old Trafford is about to open."

"I don't want all this to finish the way it did for Ronaldinho. I still believe the transfer can go through. Bluffing people is good but there is no need to do too much. I know that Manchester don't want to fall out with Fulham but Fulham's managers should also remember they are businessmen. When a big amount is put on the table, they should stop showing off, otherwise they end up with an angry and frustrated player."

Fulham spokeswoman on reports in the paper:
Thursday, January 15, 2004

BBC Sport: "There has been no contact from Chelsea for Saha, it is not true. It is also nonsense to suggest Fulham have put a price tag of £18m on Saha. None of these reports are true."
