Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

United States national team coach Bruce Arena claims Tim Howard has been made a scapegoat for Manchester United's goalkeeping problems.

Howard started the season as Old Trafford number one but was abruptly axed from that position in September after mistakes against Bolton Wanderers and Lyon.

The American has not appeared in The Premiership since, with Roy Carroll having been given an extended run in the team.

But Carroll's costly gaffe against Milan on Wednesday refuelled the debate about who should be United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's first choice.

Howard's international boss Arena feels his charge was treated unfairly when he was dropped and has been forced to shoulder much of the blame for the goalkeeping plight at Old Trafford.

"It was clearly the easy option to blame the American goalkeeper," Arena told the Daily Mail.

"Instead of sticking by him and building his confidence, it was decided that Tim should be out of the picture. Tim quickly became the scapegoat.

"Let's face it, if somebody was going to be stood down from the team or sat down for a talking to, it was hardly going to be Roy Keane was it?

"It was easier for it to be Tim. What he needs is some experience and support when things are not going well. It didn't happen."

Arena believes Howard should have been allowed to stay between the posts until Rio Ferdinand had returned to the team after suspension.

Ferdinand's comeback, soon after Howard was dropped, coincided with United's defence being shored up, and Arena feels his keeper would have benefited from playing with the England international ahead of him.

He added: "Tim was unlucky that he did not play behind a team that had the best defender in the world in it.

"Everybody knows that United's defence statistics were way worse during the time that Rio Ferdinand was banned.

"I still believe he will become United's number one for a long time and I know he will be the American number one."

I didnt see it that way at all, they closed us down when we had the ball and did it really effectivley, they also broke well but we're composed in attack sometimes having the ball in our half knocking the ball around for fun, they always had an extra man...

did you watch the same game??

Yes, I did. But during the second half Milan weren't going forward much and were pretty content playing with counter attacks, which I see them doing even the Serie A.
I think the excitement of the match may have gotten to you dude, I can see that from the way you've describe the match, but to be honest it was pretty exciting facing AC Milan. :)
Anyways, I don't want to get into any arguments. I'll just say that I disagree with you.

Why dont they ever take the easy way out and just sign a great goalie right away? A 16 year old is no good until hes atleast 19. The problem is now, not in 3 years.

I personally would United to go for Ivan Pellezoli (sp?), Roma's keeper. That guy is amazing, plus he's young. I think Roma would be willing to part with him if offered a good enough deal, I think it's a realistic purchase that Fergie could pull off.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Lumlum sorry but Pelizzoli has been dropped to 2nd keeper of Roma. Hes been terrible this season. Their new GK is Curci or Zotti. Goalie to watch is Amelia of Livorno, hes 20 i think and has been having a solid season.

Pelizzoli has also been cut from Italy by the way.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

If united are after a new keeper. Shay Given is the answer, for mind he is the best goal keeper in the world, on his day nothing can get past him.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I don't think Pelizoli has been terrible, the defense he's had this season haven't been doing too well. Although I have seen him make more mistakes this season, like the Mahalovic's 2nd goal against him.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I've just seen Pelizoli's record this season, not good :(
Didn't think he was doing that bad.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Shay Given for me!

He will win nothin at Newcastle so y not!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Id give my vote to Shay Given or Paul Robinson. Would love either Casillas or Buffon but never realistically gona happen.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

United Signs "The German".
Ron-Robert Zieler has been paraded by Manchester United after completing his move from Cologne. The young keeper agreed a three-year contract with The Red Devils in August as earlier reported and will bid to make a name for himself at Old Trafford."It is a great feeling," said Zieler recently. "Something entirely special."The chance to play at such a world-class club comes along very rarely."I have already been very impressed. I saw many pros like striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and also coach Alex Ferguson."I will be in good hands. I have the ambition, the discipline and, in addition, the will."Money played no role in my decision. I only want to play football." United scouts have informed the German media that they rate the 16-year-old as the best keeper of his age group in Europe.Zieler will have a pal from his homeland at United in the shape of midfielder Markus Neumayr.

I'd go for Given too, and whilst we're at it snap up Essien and Juninho from Lyon as well.

Essien and Juninho PLEASE!

Shay Given might just happen as Newcastle wont be in Europe!

Juninho is a must for me as we need cretivity, how do u think hes worth?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Hes weak but is really good, and has potencial.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Many of the goals he conceeded were touched, hes quite weak. He does however have very good reflexes and shot blocking at times.

Frey isnt a keeper for big clubs, he was a flop with Inter. He was like air.

I don't agree with that statement. Frey is worldclass and he has matured a lot since his inter days.

I think at a big club his reputation could even exceed the reputation of Buffon.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Ok now now that also is incorrect. Frey has inproved, but makes a couple of mistakes.

Who doesn't? Schmeichel and Seaman made loads of mistakes but will still go down as goalkeeping legends.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Well that was good enough, just. Pretty poor performanace except for Rooney, who was fantastic. He's definitely settled. Ruud looked out of form, though it always amazes me taht any balled played into him seems to stick like glue, the control before setting up teh second goal was incredible. O'Shea, after actually impressing me in his last couple matches, got back to his usual awful self. Lots of poor passes and terrible touches. Also couldn't actually tell Giggs had come aside from the free kick. I guess its good to give smithy and ruud games to get back into form, hopefully they'll both improve over the next couple weeks. Lets see Chelsea keep losin!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

i dont see why scholes was taken off instead of sheasy. i guess it really doesnt matter, but my heart was beating for 25 minutes after oneill's quite spectacular strike. we've got palace away next so i thought maybe we could start the big guns (and take them off near the end) and rest them against the fourth worst club in the prem at the mo. i honestly thought we should've pressed for a second before the half, but we didn't, and as palace did on their visit, pompey struck quickly into the second period and we were basically shellshocked.

brown and silvestre looked a little dodgy at times, but with the stable wingplay of heinze, the final result looked favourable to us. ruud turned provider this time as his great run opened things up for rooney's volley and his pass was direct and he packed a lot of zip into it, allowing rooney's perfect turn to result in a goal.

must hammer palace and head into episode two of milan-united on a high note... CMON UNITED!

ps PETER CROUCH! WHAT A MAN!!!!!4 UP NOW! 4 POINTS!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Man i hate it when lesser teams like portsmouth who have absolutly nothing to play for;come and give United a hard time. Its an important result to get morales back up.

United now need to realise that they have to close down players outside the box quicker.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

it's stubborn, but for some reason, that works. it's the ugly wins they're after, after all, there's little for them to play for (like you said alucard) or like you said milan, they pack in the midfield and destroy any sort of pretty football the other side wants to play

it's a good thing we got the three points at home anyway
