Manchester United Thread

I dunno I think we could have done with RVP but he hasn't really proven much in Turkey has he?

Di Maria didn't even wanna be here, good riddance on that one. Hernandez and Januzaj were awful decisions unless Hernandez asked for the move too, then cant really complain.

Nice, big, strong Winston Reid chose to complain about Schweinsteiger pushing him in the chest, oh I'm sorry, elbowing him in the face in the press.

Lo and behold, an FA action! It's so weird isn't it, when things are put into the press, the FA act.

For me, doesn't touch his face. But it is definitely a forearm push off. I think we should introduce red cards for each of those in a match, and the FA should have watch slow motion video footage of every corner and free kick from multiple angles to ascertain what happens when.

There'll be no players left.

He'll get a ban, but watch any Pulis' Stoke mathc on a corner. That happens continually, players hold jerseys, others lash out. Just find it odd that this particular incident is being reviewed.

Fellaini does worse than that 3 times a match. In fact, Fellaini also stamped on someone, not being reviewed.

My point isn't the incident, it's that to get the FA involved, all you need to do is get stories into the media.

I predict some manager will start using that at some point. If there's an incident in the week before their match, some sneaky manager will show a video of it in his press conference to 'highlight' it, and get the FA involved. Such a spineless organisation.

Does anyone know the offside rule anymore? Cross goes in, doesn't touch Mata but he is close to it but makes no attempt to play it. Ruled offside, to be honest mainly because of successful protests of the Wolfsburg players.

But why is the rule so unclear? For me, if Mata is in an offside position, he's offside. None of this bullsh*t interpretation.

Worst thing about this United team? I don't see a single player out there other than Schweinsteiger who is going to try and turn this around in the second half. Lingard, Varela, Borthwick-Jackson, Depay, Mata, Blind, Smalling - every one of them is nice. Gentle. Friendly.

Anyone know if Fergie has some free time from January through May?

One more edit, here are our injured defenders:
Jones, Shaw, Darmian, Rojo, Smalling, Valencia

And fit: Blind, McNair, Borthwick-Jackson, Varela

A midfielder and 3 kids. That's it. Shocking stuff. Oh, actually looks like Varela is now injured.

Ok I've finally had it with LVG. Say goodbye to being in my avatar Louis.

And P. S. Reid acted like a whiny little cunt in the game and to now turn to the press after the fact is just being a a whiny little bitch.

That was my problem with it. Keep it on the pitch. Don't moan to the cameras, especially when you've just faked being hit in the face. I'd love teh FA to ban Schweinsteiger, and then ban Reid for 3 matches for bringing the game into disrepute :)

So back 4 for the weekend looks solid:
-Varela-McNair-Blind-BorthwickJackson-

Proper prem winning stuff that.

How much progress has there been at United in the last 18 months?
"At the moment, I cannot defend myself because we are out of the Champions League and every word I say is a wrong word, I think. When you see the facts, we were further in the Capital One Cup, we qualified for the Champions League group; we have played all these matches and are still in a very good position in the league. The facts are saying that we are better than last year, so that’s my answer because I can only give facts. I’m disappointed that we’re out of the Champions League, of course."¹

So, crashing out of the Champions League Group Stage is actually progress? Astonishing...

:CONFUSE:

He's a fraud.

Points wise, chances wise, shots wise, performances wise and now results wise he's been largely similar to David f*cking Moyes.

We're 4th in the league - a terrible league - and will likely drop out of the top 4 over xmas given we basically have no actual footballers fit and able to play.

He's shown that his philosophy could succeed in turning a relatively lacking Dutch team into champions. Excellent. He has now shown that philosophy does not translate to the English league or Manchester United.

Problem is, our club is run by a man with the footballing experience of a door knob. And the new tv deal means there's no incentive to change a thing. Glazers get the 15m dividends a year, everything is great. He'll probably sign f*cking Edison Cavani, who I can only assume he's been crushing on for 3 years because he thinks he's incredibly marketable to 35-55 year old women across the Americas, and represents a real opportunity in reaching that otherwise unpenetrable demographic.

Soccernomics basically showed that the league finishes by wage bill. LVG is single handedly trying to disprove that theory.

I'm out of words....I've come to the point where there's a replay on tv during dinner last night between Chelsea and Bournemouth and Man Utd vs West Ham (which I missed), and I would rather watch Chelsea than Man Utd...
you can only hope that this loss is a wake-up call, but we're all commercialized now and no one cares about the football anymore as long as we still sell shirts and bring in the sponsorship deals...

Aren't you third in the group?
What is wrong about the Euro League?
Under Benitez Chelsea won it after being out of the CL. After all that is silverware and i would prefer it before both the league cup and the FA cup.

It seems Van Gaal is not the right man for United.
He did fantastic things with Ajax, AZ and Bayern. What he did with the Dutch national team in the last WC is IMO overrated. IMO the Dutch were very Lucky, even in the (fantastic and impressive) win against Spain. When it was 1-0, i think that it was Silva who missed a fantastic chance to 2-0. When that is goal the match is played. They had also luck against Mexico and Costa Rica...never impressed me at all...

Still think United can become champions...

Sigh...

The reality is we probably have justifications to get rid, not qualifying from that group is unacceptable, however though I don't think the grass is greener unless we got Guardolia which we won't it seems.

Ancelotti is a good coach, maybe better suited to us (he coached an exciting Madrid side so understands similar demands) but im not sure hes 'better' than LVG.

I'm fine with the Europa League, I don't share the view where it is useless or the scheduling makes it even worst, I actually like it and think its tough to win as well (But of course, I'd much rather stay in the Champions League).

With that said though, I'm just disappointed in the way we play and how we play. Sometimes I'd rather we lose beautifully than win ugly....And I really don't see how we may challenge for the league like this...

I understand that United fans are disappointed about the Euro League, but it is a trophy.

IMO the devaluation of the Euro League/UEFA Cup is one of the most disappointing things that happened in football the last years.

I often watch Euro League matches and the matches are often better than in the CL.

Take for exapmple yesterday's 8-0 thrashing of Malmö by Real Madrid (and not because it's Real Madrid). Malmö did fantastic to qualify for the CL, but that is overshadowed by that monster defeat...they don't deserve that. The worst thing is that when you compare the budgets, 8-0 is a normal result.

Now a club like Man Utd can afford to miss out on the elimination rounds of the CL, because they generate a lot of revenu. If Chelsea? Arsenal an d Man City miss out on two consecutive CL's, they are in trouble...

LVG is a strange one. He's a great coach but seems a shit manager. I mean he's so slow at fixing things.

Last year he
-Stuck with 3 at the back too long
-Kept Herrera out of the team too long
-Kept Mata out of the team too long

Once he fixed all that Utd looked like they could become a formidable team but as soon as the good run stumbled he ditched what was working and hasn't returned to it since.
And this season it's like he feels compelled to use 2 DMs because he's stacked in that department squad-wise.

I'm not convinced he has made Smalling into a top CB either tbh. He seems to have improved but how much of that is down to the overly defensive setup? Stick him in our setup, one that basically says 'haha you're a CB? fuck you!" and how would he fair?

Got to say tho that I've never been more wrong about a player as I have De Gea. I remember saying on here a couple of years ago that he'd become a very good shot stopper, like a Shay Given, but he is just a top GK in every sense.

LvG confirms Darmian picked up a hamstring problem tonight while Smalling [probably] a groin issue. Both considered doubts for Sat #MUFC

probably the worse timing ...

Dylan Samuels. May he rest in peace.

I think we're entering Arsenal of 8 years ago territory. None of our players are winners. Or, very few. Most of them seem nice, good professionals. Have some fun, do lots of charity visits. Good eggs.

But to be at the top you have to have a few players that are driven. Who rise up and over-achieve on the big occasion. Ferguson was the master of somehow turning ordinary players into winners. Players like Fletcher, Fortune, O'Shea, Nevilles, Butt, Park - none are nearly as talented or skillful as players at top clubs, but all have won more medals.

I had thought LVG had some of that power. He does not.

Given how nice this lot are, I really think Ancelotti is our best bet. He seems able to foster a really positive team spirit, and his players seem to love him. Maybe love is the answer?

One thing I will give LVG - last night was not dull. Really fun, especially the mental 2 minutes when we were through, then not.

I was watching the game so had the sound turned down, but did Van Gaal really sub Mata off for Nick Powell? If so it seems a very bizzare thing to do. I think he's a spoofer but who could you get in to replace him? At the end of the season there might be some options (e.g. Mourinho) but as someone else pointed out the whole squad (apart from the keeper) isn't quite world class anymore, there are still a handful of very good players, but it seems like he's padded out the squad with average (or aging) players. Blind, Deepay, Darmian, Scheniderline, Herrera, even Schweinstiger (given his age) - are they really in the absolute top bracket of players?

Depay can become a world class player.
Herrera and Schneiderlin are not world class players, but they are players that would be irreplacable in every world class team, unsung heroes (Neeskens, Breitner, Keane sort of players).

Not saying much given last night's result, but plenty of players have done better in the Bundesliga than in the premier league.

Franco di Santo had an amazing run, and he was one of the worst strikers I've ever seen in hte prem.

Hernandez in LVG's system would be a total and utter waste, sadly. And I love him. I'd rather have Hernandez than LVG, actually.

Yes, but to be fair to LVG, Ferguson did not use Chicharita that much, he brought him on as an impact player usually.

But i agree, he should have stayed, just like Januzaj (who doesn't play much for Dortmund).
