Manchester United Thread

The only people that can sensibly want him out must believe something about RVP that I don't.

Namely, that RVP is happy to stay, and is going to be able to start 80%+ of our matches.

Nothing in Robin's history suggests we can rely on that. When he is injured, if you let Rooney leave, we have Hernandez and Welbeck. That is simply not good enough for us.

So you have to replace him. This is a proven 1 in 2 goal-scorer who has basically led to a goal a game in every match he's started in the last 4 years. Who in Europe is that good? Cavani? Falcao? Suarez?

None of those types of players are coming in, with a transfer and their own exorbitant wage demands, at less than what it will cost us to keep Rooney. It's not a perfect situation, but it's by far the best choice available to us.

Plus, like him or not he's a huge brand, and when he knuckles down he's still one of the best players in the world. It's very 'hip' to say Rooney is overrated, and isn't a shadow on strikers who are in top scoring charts in the past 6 months. It's been happening for 10 years. Bottom line is that no other player has contributed more goals in the past 5 years in the premier league than Wayne Rooney.

Imagine if you heard United were signing the player from Germany with that accolade, or Italy.

I think you're going down a steep slope once a single player gets that kind of treatment.

I'm not sure it's a wise investment in the long term either. I'd be surprised if both Rooney and RvP are still here next season.

Although if I had to keep one, it would be Rooney but not at that cost. Better off keeping van Persie, moving Mata central and using the Rooney money to rebuild other areas of the squad.

I agree one of the two will go, but Rooney is younger, has a better injury record and is clearly a Moyes' favourite.

It's a valid point. Take a player like Januzaj, I don't know what he's on but I would be surprised if its more than £30,000. Is he worth one-tenth of Rooney in terms of wage? Well maybe at this moment in time it's ok, but if Januzaj continues to develop then surely he'll be able to command more than 10% of Rooney's wage. If there is any semblance of a wage structure then giving him (around) £300,000 could lead to massive cost increases in terms of other wages.

Yeah I don't think anyone is jumping for joy however I think in our current situation we kind of need to keep hold of him.

I personally prefer Van Persie as a player but Rooney has more 'value' in terms of age and has showcased he's brilliant as a '10' or '9'.

A player the age of Januzaj should still be playing for glory and much less for money...
Football wages are ridiculously high, even at the foot of the pyramid...but most of us would do the same as Rooney.
If there is one United player who deserves that amount of money, it's Rooney. He is becoming a club iconn i've said it countless times: a very unselfish player who is seriously underrated and now already one of the alltime great United players..

Yeah he's a brilliant world class player, anyone saying different is being silly, however where do you draw the line with him, better player's have left and we've managed, however I definitely understand why that type of confidence isn't around at this moment.

Apparently Van Gaal is looking to work in England.

Rumors are the deal being held up ' imagine rights'. That seems to be every players battle to have. Once a player has his picture flood the sites and such he starts having ideas. In a local mall in Orlando they have Rooney/RVP/Chicarito on huge banners it advertise bulova watches or something like that .

To be honest, I can the Rooney thing going both ways. Yes, it'd be great to keep such a quality player in the squad. What he has done for us is incomparable to anyone else in the current squad and with him happy, it can only be good for us.

Now if we sold him, it'd also show that no player is bigger than the club. It might be also good to show that Moyes has the control of the club and no matter how great a player may be, if he doesn't play to what the manager wants him to do or tries to hold the club for ransom, he'd be gone. That is one thing which made SAF different from other managers and Man Utd different from other clubs as it needs a team, not just star players or just to make money.

Difference is though, if SAF sold Rooney I'd have no problem with it, I now long term we'd be better off, if Moyes did it though, I'd question so many more things.

So in that regard its definitely best for Moyes to hold onto one of our best players.

Really ridiculous they're going to give Rooney these wages after all the games he has played with United. He's not going to get better, if anything he'll only decline. This only works short term.

yeh it is a bit weird, he's definitely past his prime and even in his prime years he was never world class, £300,000 a week is fucking mental..

It's about 60k a week more than Yaya Toure, and I'd imagine there are players at both City and Chelsea who are now on more than that.

No one would blink if Aguero had been offered that by City when he signed. (not saying he is, I've no idea).

It's also about half what Ronaldo and Messi are on. And who knows about Zlatan/Falcao etc at the other petro-clubs.

Modern football is a bitch. Even if Rooney is the first player in England to breach the 300k boundary, he won't be the last.

And what choice do United have? Get rid of their most effective player, possibly for not a ton of money, and have to replace him as well as build an entire new squad over the summer? Obviously we'd all like Rooney to be like Scholes, come into a room, see a new contract, sign it, walk out again and thank the club for what they've given him. But that generation of players is over.

Well said. Even though I agree with some of the complaints that Rooney toyed the club, I'm just glad this is virtually a done deal. Like him or not, his departure would ve done a ton of damage to the moral at the club in this condition. Holding on to Rooney is more symbolic in many ways than anything. Now let's hope this flexing of financial muscle pays off over the summer transfer window.

No-one at City or Chelsea are on 300k, tho, after Rooney's contract, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them are having words with their agents now.
Aguero was given 170k when he arrived and is still on that or has recently gone up to 200k with his extension, depending on who you read.
Yaya is on 200k

Is Rooney worth 50% more than those two and Suarez? Not for me. Not by a long stretch

Good for Rooney :APPLAUD::APPLAUD::APPLAUD::APPLAUD: take Mutd to the cleaners :BOP: . You can say this could happen to you if you join Mutd! Think about it , no one else wanted to come last summer they might now.

Is he worth 50% of Ronaldo? I'd argue yes.

You're just picking certain players.

Rooney is the most marketable player in the premier league too. (I don't like the guy, but look around - he's in airports, malls, and so forth).

So apparently Januzaj will not play for Kosovo in the upcoming friendly....strange.

Not surprised , his father said "he won't play this 1st kosovo nt match but that doesn't mean he won't play for Kosovo in future", I really wished he would have com for first match, it's really important for whole Kosovo but maybe he'll com in future , I believe he'll in near future I just hope he play for Kosovo/Albania or even Belgium , but not England that would be bullshit!

I think a big part of the Rooney criticism isn't so much the amount, but more that he has managed to get two bumper contracts by handing in, or threatening to hand in a transfer request. I have the same with Suarez, they are discussing a new contract after the crap during the summer, I'd rather they sell him for 70-80 mil in the summer tbh. And the Rooney contract will probably only make it more likely as I cant see Liverpool paying him that much.

Weird match so far (at half time). We've looked really good, played with almost all the ball in CP's half, but, Crystal Palace are mimicking Fulham with the patented 6-4-0 formation. Just impossible to break that down really.

Given the way the season has gone I expect us to concede from their first hoof up the pitch though.

Fellaini has been excellent in midfield, but missed an open goal essentially. Nice to see him back and working though.
