Manchester United Thread

Van Nistlroy pretended to have been hit by Vieira and got him sent off, that is a pretty pussy thing to do? Raking studs down players on purpose is worse than diving, it's violence and abuse.

Arsenal & United fans arguing about the likes of Van Nistelrooy before a big game at the weekend, i'm feeling so nostalgic, it's just like old times!

Let's talk Keane & Viera next...

I saw this article n the arrogance of Mutd :)) I think Moyes will serve humble pies to the club.

I remember that. To be fair, I'm sure that the player told him he was joining - it's not like United would just make that up and put it on the official website.

I know he came, toured United and Carrington then we sent in the big guns to convince him: Gary Neville. And then he joined Arsenal. There's a lesson there.

;)

Where was SAF ,dealing w Ronsldo and RM? We must say Ramsey made the right choice , he had a bumper contract at the start of last season . A time he really didn't deserve it from a fans perspective . I think footballer career is a hit or a miss really. We must say giving a player belief n confidents and sooner or later they will stand n deliver. I wouldn't mind Nani n Chicharito at Arsenal :) they can be a Ramsey sort of a player. I honestly don't see anything special in Ramsey, only his desire to win the ball n score.

Yeah, Van Nistelrooy was an ultra cunt. What he did, leaving the studs on Cashley Cole, that was assault. Super dirty.
And then getting Vieira sent off like that, for me it's the exact same thing as diving, if not worse because it was sort of off the ball situation. Not quite the tough guy he thought he was and, in that respect, his offences were not very far from some by Joey Barton really.

And yes, he was a diver. Maybe he didn't dive as often as other known divers, but he did it when it was the most convenient.
When missed that penalty that shouldn't have been, that was one of my favourite Premier League moments.

Well, let's not try to ignite the bad memories and feelings for the Sunday game and just hope for good football, eh? :)

EDIT: It wasn't Van Nistelrooy who dived for that penalty, as I thought initially.

I love all the memories of Van Nistlerooy being so evil for getting out of the way of Vieira's kick and getting him sent off.

Here's the incident, you can see innocent Vieira just shaking a foot at Ruud, no reason that should be a yellow card.

If we're honest, Ruud should have stood still, been kicked, and then gotten on with it.

And Keown didn't even get a card for that action against Van Nistlerooy. Can you imagine if he'd done that to someone like Suarez? Luis would still be holding his face, 5 years later.

That's my point, I know he was (rightly) disliked by Arsenal fans - I've no problem with that - but I seriously never thought of him as a diver. And no one seems to be able to give great examples like Young/Nani/Pires/Suarez.

Anyway, assuming Gotodelli was on the wind up, success - bravo sir!

Not on a wind up at all. He may have toned it out of his game but he did dive alot earlier on in his Utd career. He had a bad reputation for diving at that point, I don't think anyone - at the very least - could deny that.

RVN wasn't even central to my point anyway. I could pick other players. If I didn't really think RVN was a diver, why would I derail my own serious post in that way? I wouldn't. I didn't.

You not liking/agreeing with something doesn't make it a wind up.

Seems weird arguing about this almost 10 years later, but I do honestly think what Vieira did shouldn't warrant a yellow. He didn't hit him, and it was a half hearted attempt if anything. The way I see it, he was on the receiving end of a rough challenge and he reacted with this hostile gesture (which he shouldn't have in fairness), but still it was little more than a gesture.
What Arsenal fans disliked about the incident is that Van Nistelrooy made a meal of that, just after attempting to climb Vieira's back. I really think he made a big deal of absolutely nothing (what Keown did after the final whistle, on the other hand, was obviously something worthy of note and deserved some punishment).
But the incident itself was a bad call by the ref because he didn't consider the whole context: the rough foul on Vieira and the fact Van Nistelrooy could have avoided hiting him in the back with both his feet. Almost anyone's blood would boil in such circumstances.
However, I reckon the biggest villain there was the ref, because players will do whatever (fairly or not) to get opponents in trouble. And the ref should be the one reading that situation rationally - who did what, who started and if they're purposefully looking to get an opponent on a 2nd yellow (which might have been the case there), etc.
Anyway, I remember that ref and really hated his guts because Arsenal never got decisions from him. :P

Can't disagree with that. But - you see things like Beckham being sent off against Argentina for the same thing, and a wonderful Scholes red card where Alonso held his jersey for about 5 minutes, and Scholes eventually swung a punch - missed by about 2 feet - but was red carded anyway.

Certain referees won't put up with any agression - mostly because they're weak and it's an easy call for them to make. I believe it was Mike Dean that sent Vieira off, could be wrong, but he's the most spineless, pitiful excuse for a man I've seen referee a match.

Say what you want about Howard Webb, but at least he referees like the players' equal, not some snivelling coward always running away from things like Dean.

I haven't seen the Scholes incident you mentioned. But I was thinking about that Beckham red card in the World Cup just the other day. Something utterly naive of him, but at the same time Simeone would go down with a blow there if he had to, such a cynical, dirty bastard he was as a player. It's a case of refs being conned by "smarter", "streetwise" footballers. A little more ridiculous than those cases was Rivaldo pretending he got hit in the face when a Turkish player kicked a ball at him - which amazingly enough resulted in a red for the Turk. These cases fall into this category of cheating that I absolutely despise. It's just as bad, if not more, than diving during open play.

The ref that sent Vieira off wasn't Mike Dean, it was that Ed Harris lookalike. Another twat, equally feeble.

Another thing occurred to me - if I'm not mistaken (I think that was season 03-04), had Van Nistelrooy scored that penalty, Arsenal wouldn't finish unbeaten that season. Wow!

The picture of the Vieira, Van nistlerooy was at an angle where it looks closer. From what i remember there was some distance from both players which made it even more ridiculous.

I wish there was a video or something? To see for sure but I remember at the time seeing a side on replay and literally for Vieiras leg to have touched Van Nistlrooy his leg would have been twice as long.

Anyway it doesn't matter. There were dirty Arsenal players and diving ones, but it is true if the player is one of your best, fans will always find excuses and deflect away from their cheating much more than if it is a player not doing so well for you at the time.

What about the Rooney dive that ended our invincibles run? That is a case of a great player for you diving in an important match.....I don't remember many utd fans that were angry with Rooney at the time? I just remember Man United taking the piss :PP

Hmm so not to go totally off topic ..but what are you guys' opinion on Leroy Fer? Been impressed with him on the intl and club levels for a while now, and again today against West Ham.

Good enough for Utd, or no? Still has a raw side, and not the greatest of touches but I like his explosiveness, skill on the ball and overall composure and reliability in the middle. Plus..his large frame doesn't hurt.

Was just about to post it.

My biggest childhood heroes encapsulated in one film. I love United because of these guys. There isn't anything more relevant to my interests on film than this.

So, after all that, some actual football to be played.

My bold prediction: if Rafael is fit and starts, we'll have a score draw, maybe 2-2.

If he's not fit, Arsenal are going to win.

Amazing watching highlights of the 8-2 earlier: that team is more or less able to play tomorrow, but so few have gotten better. Anderson was excellent, Young could have been MOTM with two incredible goals. There was so much youth and promise in that team, but we haven't really improved since then.

Similarly, almost all the same faces at Arsenal, yet this season things seem to be clicking.

Football form is so strange.

Really frustrating to watch how often our mids are way too slow to spot rvp s runs

That yellow for Jones is one of the dumbest cards I've ever seen a ref pull.

Been more like a classic United-Arsenal game, and definitely more like the old United.

Shame if Vidic has to go off for two reasons. Him and Evans have swallowed everything up and Jones has been fantastic in the middle of midfield.

Still, stick Januzaj left, Rooney in midfield and stick Kagawa behind RVP and absolutely go for it. Can't rest on a 1-0 lead.

Yeah would like to see Januzaj coming on. I figured the Vidic out and Cleverley on thing would cause instability. How massive has Jones been today thus far tho? Good stuff
