Manchester United Thread

Just out of interest, what differentiates us from other 'super power teams' then? Because Tito Villanova is hardly proven. That random ex-player Pep Gaurdiola either. Heynkes has a good track record but I can't imagine many players desperate to join one of his teams. Klopp had a relatively poor record before the current gig.

I like to think joining Manchester United still has some draw.

Personally when I see these clubs I look at:

Barcelona who have been a dominant force in European football for the last 5 years particularly and longer besides and given the fact a 'cycle' of their success has just ended I see a chance to be part of the new cycle at the club under a relatively new manager who was assistant during the recent successes of the club. I see the chance to work with world class superstars, including the man who is considered the worlds very best in Messi, I would look at the club and see that they pay players very well in terms of a basic salary and bonuses, there is the draw of being part of a club who's style is the envy of many clubs through out European and world football.

Bayern Munich, a club that have enjoyed undeniable success for years and have a proven record of producingquality players. Guardiola is just coming into the club, and so I see the chance of being a part of something special, the new boss has a CV that had boards drooling across the continent. The ambition of improvement is plain to see given the £30+m transfer of Gotze recently, being a part of this fresh face lift of a historically honour rich club. The chance to play along side Robben, Ribbery, Neuer and Schweinsteiger is a opportunity to feature in a star laden team that many will jump at. Although wages will still be similar to those on offer at any of Europes team clubs the chance to play at the modern and beautiful Allianz Arena in front of Germany's passionate crowds is in itself a fantastic opportunity not to be missed.

Real Madrid offers itself up as the Galacticos home, a team for had many many years of glorious history and continues to compete at a high standard. Financially willing to pay as much as the highest bidder they've drawn stars in over the years that many idolize for years. In the current crop I could be playing with Casillas, Ramos, Ronaldo, Di Maria, Kaka, Modric and Benzema. They have Mourinho in charge currently, but should he leave they have the chance to employ a top manager ad they please, and as they have for years. Ideally working with such huge egos will as always be a problem just look at Essien more recently being upset as his team mates valued themselves above him, but again the pay packet will soften the blow and the Bernabeu is a fantastic stadium with 90,000+ fans, admittedly they do not represent the passion on show in the premier league and bundesliga but all the same they are passionate for the team and will support me if I succeed.

Manchester United can offer me a team that has dominated the English scene for 20 years now winning twice on the continent in the process. The fans are die hard as England has always produced such hard core football fans. United can offer me stability as a European contender. United can offer me the chance to play along side Rooney, Vidic and RvP as world class talent goes.

What Manchester United can't offer me however is the same wages as other clubs, Manchester United have employed David Moyes who's CV is not impressive in comparison to others his is a story of mediocre stability in comparison to Guardiolas bright burning trophy filled tenure at Barca, Mourinho who has won the league at every top club he's managed, Tito Villanova who prior to his cancer had his team playing football good ejoughh to top the league easily and even Mancini is a success story in his time at Manchester City.
With Manchester United I have team mates who are very good, but only three can be considered world class in themselves, I can see that they have competiton from Money Bags City who have success in recent years in winning domestically and I can see that all they need is a touch up and they'll be consistently plying their trade in European football I can also see that their team includes Aguero, Silva, Kompany, Hart, Tevez, Toure just to name some players who are world class and I can see a team in Chelsea who have won the champions league lastyear and are previous Premier League champions and have a young vibrant team who can count Cech, Mata, Hazard and Torres among their world renowned players, all it would take is the right tactical push and thwyre right up their with the best of them.

So while its clearly a personal preference of mine to criticise united a lot heavier than other teams the draw of other teams is huge, and I hope united can compete of course I do. I just don't see it.

If Rooney ends up leaving, it might actually be one of the better things that could happen to us. He s given us some amazing performances but too much has been made of his importance as being the "talisman" of this team. Chicha, Welbeck and Kagawa will get some much needed room for more game time without his presence. In a way I feel RvP and Chicha complement each other better BC of their different styles. We just need to get some better balls in the box, both from the wings and midfield.
Players like Bale, Banes and Fellaine would bring some much needed urgency to this team. I also hope Nani does end up staying even if this season had almost all the signs of him leaving.

My biggest concern would be old guard players like Evra and Vidic being lured away by big money elsewhere as we need their presence during the coming transition period.

Wow, you want an example of today's footballers? Wayne Rooney just changed his official Twitter account from:

"Manchester United Player" to "NikeUK Athlete".

Classy.

To be fair, he's had that for months along with many others like Cleverley.

PIPA is surprisingly spot on IMO (Im kidding :P)

The more I think about the Moyes appointed, its very 'safe' and just trying to keep the machine going without trying to reinvent it.

The players are already 'winners' with a great mix of young and old.

I doubt Moyes will need to add much to them, if anything that winning mentality will probably rub off on him, I doubt next year if its 1-1 with 10 minutes to go we won't be banging on the door to get that winner and likely get it, that's already ingrained in this lot.

his test will probably come in 3-4 years time when this cycle ends and Moyes will have to build his own from scratch, hopefully by then he'll have a few league titles and some European pedigree to his name.

Some people are not happy

"It isn't, and will never, ever be time to rally behind Moyes. The man shouldn't be in the job, and probably won't be after his first season.

Moyes will have been appointed with the league in mind, which is sensible, in that it should be the sine qua non of any United season, and that United neither have the players nor money to compete in Europe in the short term. However, Moyes doesn't strike me as a manager likely to replicate Fergie's ability to out-perform higher spending managers at an elite level. He has spent 11 years settling into comfortable mediocrity, at a level where out-managing wealthier and more profligate clubs through consistency and hard work is easier.

Then there's Everton's colossally poor cup and big game record. It's appalling. Moyes, whenever confronted with a team superior or equal to his, reverts to two deep sitting banks of four, a defensive midfielder sweeping between them, and a lone striker to whom the ball is hoofed up to. Whatever else one says of Mourinho and Benitez, they are exceptional managers tactically, have excellent records in isolated matches (note how Mourinho gradually worked out and conquered Pep), and have good cup records. Moyes has none of this, and will increase United's growing inability to win against direct competitors. For a club which considers itself as big as any other in the world, this is not acceptable.

His transfer record is scarcely encouraging either. He uses foreign players to add elan and flair to a nucleus of physical, functional British players, which is acceptable (if very 1990s), however, his record is scarcely encouraging. Bilyaletdinov was an awful signing, Yakubu and Beattie equally poor, and Pienaar and Mirallas are hideously over-rated. Christ alone knows what he'll do to Kagawa, but I'm confident it won't involve playing him consistently as a 10 behind van Persie or Hernandez. And realistically, United desperately need high-class transfers this summer. Nani and Anderson are done at the club, Young is terrible, Valencia now in a slump of Torres proportions, and Cleverley and Welbeck notably failing to develop. At least two exceptional players are needed, and I cannot conceive of James Rodriguez, Lewandowski, or any other player of their calibre, being excited by the prospect of working under David Moyes. Five years ago, United played in an exciting, ground-breaking formation, with exciting, young, international players (including a Ballon D'Or winner), and dominated Europe, notwithstanding Barca. Now we have a mediocre Scot who will scour Europe's minor leagues for bargain players.

And in terms of formation, Moyes loyalty to 4411/442 is simply another reason not to appoint him. Tactically, the world is changing again. Three-man defences are increasingly in vogue, pressing is being done more selectively, and there is a diversity of tactical options across Europe (Montella's Fiorentina are a joy to watch). Persisting with one of Fergie's salient weaknesses, his tactics, by appointing a manager from the same traditionally 'British' school, is obtuse. United, with diminished resources, need a manager able to out-think the opposition, and that doesn't involve a Mike Bassett style four four f***ing two, muscle-bound hulks in midfield, and obdurate defensiveness.

If United wanted a manager to promote youth, whilst remaining consistent to the values of the club, they ought to have looked to Klopp. AVB would have made sense, although been expensive. But United have wasted a huge opportunity in appointing Moyes, and favoured mediocrity over a chance of excellence".

Couldn't disagree more. That is a super biased post from a Liverpool fan...a Liverpool fan who forgets that Everton lately has better reslults than Liverpool and that on a much inferior budget...i wonder what this says about Dalglish and your current manager (and IMHO Rogers is a fine manager).

You talk about mediocrity in that post ? IMO Moyes is overachieving.
Everton had a bad Cup record ? Who cares about cups ? Wigan Athletic and Bradford...
Did Man Utd had such a fantastic Cup record lately ? Spurs ? Arsenal ? All mediocre teams ? Don't think so.

Kevin Mirallas is a massively overrated player ? Isn't it a bit early to conclude that, IMO he did reasonably well in his first season although he was injured a litle bit too much. I heard somebody on the Football Weekly podcast say that Mirallas could be considered as one of the transfers of the season. That is exagerated but apparently i'm not the only one who thinks Mirallas can't be considered a bad transfer.
Bilyaletinov ? Was he that bad ? Ok.
Now let's look at a couple of transfers from Ferguson: Djemba Djemba anyone ? And the Portugese guy he bought last season ? His goalkeepers ?
Does Ferguson has a bad transfer record ? Obviously not, what i'm trying to proof is the fact that you can make everybody's transfer record look bad by picking out some of the worst transfers.

Let's look at it the other way. Who was the most expensive signing Moyes made for Everton ? A certain Fellaini who came from unfancied Standard. Liverpool accidentally bought another player from that same team (which should have eliminated Liverpool from the CL if not for the ref, by the way): Jovanovic... Now that was a huge success compared to Myes' poor signing of Marouane Fellaini.

Moyes will be out of job after one season ? Well i'm old enough to remember Ferguson as manager of Aberdeen. He won the Cup winners cup with that team in a final against Real Madrid and afterwards came to Man Utd. In his second season he won the FA CUP and if he hadn't won that he would have been sacked in his second season.

IMO Moyes can only be judged after 3 seasons (something Liverpool should have done with Roy Hodgson instead of sacking him and appointing Kenny 'Andy Caroll' Dalglish) and not earlier. Imagine what would have happened if the United board would have sacked Ferguson at the end of his second season ???? Maybe even Liverpool could have won an EPL title...

IMO Moyes did marverlous with Everton...and just give him a chance. I admire him if only for the guts to take over from Ferguson, because it takes guts to follow in his footsteps...one thing is certain not a single manager will do as good as he did....

I don't think Man Utd will become a club outside of the top 4 after Fergusons retirement. Next season they might face a difficult season, but they might also win the EPL...

I'm quite interested as to which type of players Moyes will go for when you look at some of the past/present players for Everton (might be forgetting some)... Jagielka, Baines, Arteta, Cahill, Fellaini. They are quite good players who in their peak would get in many top clubs.

If United can keep the same squad, all be it I do reckon Rooney will be off. I think at least domestically will still be very, very solid. However I can see Europe being a different kettle of fish

It would be silly to look at who he's bought at Everton as a barometer to what kind of players he'd bring in at Manchester United.

I think in all honesty, he might consider 1 or 2 from Everton (which were being linked with) in Baines and Fellaini to maybe have someone who he's familiar with while possessing the qualities to play at a top club (even if I'd rather not have either to be honest!)

I expect similar signings to SAF to be honest, the scout's will bring him the reports of whose impressed and he'll make a final decision.

Do you think midfield will get a look at? I cant really think who the the last CM Fergie bought? Anderson was it?

Yeah, I think so, I think were also in for a crazy Summer, I can see some high profile exits with some hopeful high profile arrivals too.

If we can keep most of the team and add some real quality to CM and on the wings we'll be OK, but that's without mentioning we could be losing a lot of quality in Rooney and Nani.

It's too early to say what we'll look like on September 1st.

@ gerd,

Goalgerd's posts are quotes from the 365 mailbox made by utd fans. Its a fun read, as they are showing both sides, pro and against Moyes.

Just signing a new central midfielder or two should be enough for Moyes to get his own statue outside the stadium. ;)

guys is Adnan Januzaj any good ? did you guys see him playing ? and when you think he can get his chance to play for 1st team ?

I've seen a fair amount of Januzaj for the reserves this year. He's really impressed - at the start of the season (and last year) he was still in the youth setup, but was so far above that level they moved him up early.

He tends to play as an outside forward, and sometimes (because we literally have don't have a single reserve striker) as the centre forward. I'd say he most similarly resembles an Iniesta-type player. Obviously not at that level, but he has great technique, decent vision and moves the ball on quickly. He also kind of glides.

He reminds me most of Ravel Morrison at youth level. Uh-oh.

Still not fully recovered from the announcement to be honest, still feels like a very weird dream.

Moyes will get my backing though, he would of been one of my choices anyway, as I've mentioned before. Much preferred to the likes of Mourinho, who would potentially bring short term success then a spell of instability when he inevitably leaves.

Agreed, it's going to be weird for anyone else to be in the dugout. For a lot of us he's one of those things we can relate all the way to our childhood, watching Manchester United led by our manager Sir Alex Ferguson was routine for the entirety of my life.

Regarding Mourinho, I don't think he has much left to accomplish really, I think the National team job is it really.

You'd think SAF is a glutton for being honored. Grandstand at Old Trafford named after him..check...Scuplture unveiled few months ago...check...winning league ...check...dramatically retiring...check. Wtf are we going to do now? Rename Old Trafford to Old Fergie? 5 minute Stadium? Put an image of his face in the club`s crest?

Scholes is calling it a day too, again! :P

What a player, and unlike the SAF retirement this ones been on the cards. Will be a memorable game tomorrow.
