Manchester United Thread

Yeah I'd be quite surprised if we won.

The atmosphere will be incredible and even the most seasoned of our team usually get a little affected when it's like that. (Think back to the nights in the San Siro against Milan when we've struggled to compete with them and the crowd have been electric).

Gala were very good against us at OT, obviously lacking that last little bit of quality to take a point or three back to Turkey but gave us plenty of problems and were better than us in possession. Playing the youngsters is a risk but given we're already through it's simply valuable experience for them.

Least it'll make things a bit more interesting, our performances in the CL this season have been utterly dire.

Galatasaray is very poor at home. Back in the days in Ali Sami Yen we were even the favorites against Real Madrid, and we beat them 3-2. It will be a big suprise for me if we can manage to beat United, even dough United will play with a B squad. The new stadium is a modern stadium and not a "Hell" like back in the days.

Should be an interesting match. Lots of youth in the United team - this is their first big chance to shine. They'll want to impress Fergie and the fans.

Also nice to see Phil Jones back. Fingers crossed we can actually keep a defender fit for a while - due to his injuries it's been largely forgotten how promising he looked this time last year. Wonder if Fergie will immediately move him into the middle, or if he'll start at right back to give Rafael a rest.

Edit, well Fergie certainly isn't making things easy on young Phil - have a season debut alongside Michael Carrick. Who, as far as I can remember, has only once not looked like a walking disaster in central defense.

----------Lindegaard----------
--Rafa---Carrick-Jones-Buttner-
-----Fletcher--Cleverley------
-----------Powell-------------
---Welbeck---------Anderson---
----------Hernandez-----------

Eeesh.

Gotta give the Gala fans credit - if nothing else they intimidated the hell out of the referee!

Melo = no cards = oddest officiating I've ever seen. He literally committed 5 yellow card worthy offences, and that's by premier league standards. Ref basically set the tone as: I'm going to allow dangerous tackles, time-wasting and feigning of facial injuries. Good luck chaps.

You're really Fener fan bro.

Did you see the match? He had two awful tackles in the opening 8 minutes alone!

The Guardian minute by minute guy (hardly a paper known for their love of United) was hypothesizing at half time about Melo having compromising pics of the ref ;)

Anyway, doesn't matter. The match literally means nothing to United - all I wanted was to ensure no one got an injury. So when I see Melo flying into reckless challenges and getting away with it, it pisses me off.

How this wasn't a straight red, I'll never know:

From that angle that looks a very good tackle. ALL ball and no trailing leg, not even studs up on leg. Let me warn you I got a 4/12 on the ref test

Indeed, look up 'control', 'endangering an opponent' and so forth. Pretty nasty stuff - very very similar to Hangeeland's over the weekend.

Anywho, onto the weekend! Desperately need a win, especially now that the rentboys have decided to self combust ahead of the City match.

That Guardian report doesnt seem that professional or objective to be honest. The guy is just in there having a pop at Lindegaard:

Altintop sends in a cross from the right, which Lindegaard punches only as far as Amrabat on the left of the area. He shifts it on to his right foot and sees his curler ping off Carrick's head and out for a corner. That wasn't especially impressive from Lindegaard, who was poor against Norwich on the weekend

Having seen a fair bit of Anders Lindegaard in recent weeks, I'm starting to wonder if his sole purpose is to highlight how brilliant David de Gea is. The Dane is a bit flappy.

I thought he was probably your best player last night. I dont think he was "flappy" at all, he made a number of great saves including on he tipped onto the bar, but numbnuts in the Guardian didnt see it as a save. I'm not sure how he was "poor" against Norwich, he was only beaten once, by a pretty much unstoppable header. Even last night the goal he let in was probably more the fault of the guy on the line at the corner (or whomever decided to put one of the shortest players on the post defending a corner).

 So glad I support United.

I do worry though how the club will evolve once the manager doesn't have the backing that SAF does, an entire generation of United fans have no idea what its like to see a change in management or the potential of our manager getting sacked, let alone as frequently as our rivals.

Will be strange. :ANX:

Don't see much wrong with it either. The fairy brigade will be out to slaughter it though. I'm a crap tackler but never been one to cry about somebody diving in at me as long as they go for / take the ball. If they don't go for or take the ball, they'd probably get the local handshake but for christ sake, I wish people would stop crying about every single challenge nowadays.

There's shocking tackles and then there are ones like that gif. That gif isn't that bad now is it? Not to me anyway.

I think the difference is Professional Football and Sunday League have very different rules, whether people like them or not.

In Sunday league the entire Premier League/Serie A/La Liga teams would be labelled 'The fairy brigade'.

were discussing 'Professional Football' and in that version of the game its a clear red card.

I don't play Sunday league and I'm not talking about Sunday league either. And different rules? News to me.

Was he sent off for it? If not then it obviously wasn't a clear Red.

Yes, that's some clever logic right there. Refs are infallible. Show me the Hangelaand tackle over the weekend from behind and it will look identical. It's almost a carbon copy. Both got the ball. But both were off the ground, out of control with both feet.

The difference between these 'fairies' and Sunday league players is that their livelihood and the industry as whole depends on other professional players not endangering each other for 90 minutes a week.

It comes down to what you like about the game. If you want to see true skill, pace and attacking magic than you're going to have to accept that players need protecting. If you'd rather see rugged defending that is occasionally mistimed (but well intentioned of course) breaking a leg each week, go sign up to the Lee Cattermole fan club.

The sport has evolved from 20 years ago in terms of officiating and protecting the players. Sometimes the fans have to remember that.

No offence but I'm a total football type of guy but there is nothing wrong with a hard tackle. The tackle we are on about was hardly that bad. It's a mans game and tackles like these are going to happen. Sometimes the fans have to remember that! And who said anything about endangering anybody for 90 mins?
I'm no tough nut at all but I laugh at some of the stuff I read on here. Over the top cry baby comments at times. I don't want to see anybody go out and do somebody but some of you need to stop exaggerating things so much.

As for the logic, well that's the ref, myself and another person who think it so like I said, it wasn't a clear red.

so...why are we playing Lindgaard and not De Gea?? is there something that I missed?? I understand for the remaining champions league games as they don't matter, but EPL as well?? He's really not that great...

*edit* yet another proof that Hernandez needs to come on as an impact sub to be effective. Not as useful from the start for 90 minutes.

Someone put a fork in Scholsey - cause he's done :(

Every time United have lost this season (except the reserves against Gala) has been a 442 with either Scholes or Giggs in the middle.

If only there were some pattern here.

Scholes comes off, a midfielder who can actually move is put on and hey presto, we look like a football team.

How many games does Fergie need to get the point?

Scholes has still got a lot to offer this season but only as an impact sub when needed against a tiring team.
What baffles me is to how Rooney keeps picking up these man of the match awards. Constantly gives the ball away with on or two great passes here and there. He is and always be just a striker..does not have anywhere near the skill and talent to play as a creative mid permemant basis.
The less said about fergusons team selections and tactics the better. No surprise that united were more successful with either Kidd, McLaren or Queiroz by his side.

Beach knows better than Ferguson as usual.

You armchair managers make me laugh.

Man Utd sit top of the league because of Ferguson. Scholes is allowed to have bad games. He still has a season left in him.

Yep, just me, every fan and hey-ho the manager himself saying we were poor until Scholes came off.

I'd love to be wrong, but Scholes hasn't been good yet this season - and worse - he's been giving away chances with his lack of agility. Last season he was very safe, this year he's giving the ball away in dangerous situations at least once a match.

I'm 100% sure Scholes and Giggs will go at the end of the season, possibly with Fergie (eeeeeeeeeeeeeeep)

You could put Fergie's statue in that midfield and it would do a better job of tracking opposition midfield runners than Scholes.

Just stick Cleverley and Anderson together in there, Fergie. I can't think of another title chasing side that chops and changes their midfield as often as us.

Ay Fergie's been a tinker man for years but I do think it has its benefits, I just think when a certain player is in great form he needs to let them continue, with Nani and Anderson in particular, both could be in great form and find themselves left out, only to return and put in a mediocre performance.

Carrick + one of Ando and Cleverley in the bigger games, I'd only use Ando/Clev in home games where we need to be on the front foot for most of the game.

Come on...this is irony at its best.

You call people armchair managers for their comment or judgment and yet you can come up with "Scholes is allowed to have bad games."?

There are no passengers in this team or any other team as a matter of fact.
