Manchester United Thread

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Really :SS doesn't the fact we scored in both legs ATLEAST get us into extra time or does their 2 away goals rule out our 1 and 1 each

No bro.

Jamesey explained it well.

In the event that the aggregate result is tied after both legs, then the team that has scored more goals AWAY from home will go through and although not that fair, I like this rule. It does encourage more attacking displays away from home rather than teams just sitting back soaking up pressure and hoping to take match to 2nd leg when they're at home since it can play such a big role in qualifying to next round and often has in the past.

So yeah if Chelsea were to win 2-1 at Old Trafford, they would go through.

Similarly if Shakhtar could hammer Barca without conceding a goal (4-0) then they would go through because of that 1 goal they scored in Camp Nou as opposed to Barca's none.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

What I hate is that away goals count in extra time, meaning the away side in the second leg gets an extra half an hour to score an away goal.

Liverpool got knocked out of the Europa League last season in this fashion.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Feels good to be given a decision against a Chelsea at SB. Now they know how it feels. :D
You got a decision against Chelsea in the CL, not much of an achievement for any club.

Anyway that probably sounds bitter so let me make clear that your win was absolutely deserved and I'll be very surprised if we somehow go through now. IMHO you could have got another one had you not respected us in the second half.

Yeah that part of it is really stupid and unfair.

I suppose the argument is the home side has 30 mins extra to score aswell.
I agree extra time should be win outright though.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think we should just scrap away goals. It's ridiculous and usually (though not this time!) results in the first leg of ties being really dull.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Did anyone see the Reserves against City last night?
You might want to sit down before reading the next bit.

Ready?

Anderson came on in the second half, and scored 2 (yes, two!) goals! He played really well too, so wouldn't be suprised to see him feature against Fulham tomorrow.

Bebe is still pony though...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I remember this game...particularly because Ando was having a great game and wasnt happy when being subbed. He literally ran the game from the middle.I hope he can be back to his best and stake a claim in the first team for the remainder of the season.

But if both teams score in extra time the away team still wins, they still have the extra advantage.

It's a ridiculous rule imo.

Aye. It's daft. I can accept why they do it over the 2 x 90 mins games but extra time is a strange one.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I think the argument is that the home side get to play on their own ground for longer. If the game is a tie after 90 minutes, we'll play another 30 minutes at Old Trafford. Chelsea dont get the benefit of playing that extra time on their own ground.

Of course that begs the question, whats more important to you? Playing in front of your own fans or being given more time to get an away goal that had higher priority?
I'd imagine a character like Jose Mourinho would rather have more time to score the away goal than play at home, where as teams like Liverpool and ourselves seem to really benefit from playing at home.

At the end of the day, its something you wont be happy with either way if you were on the recieving end of a defeat.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

The thing which annoys me about it is that scoring 1 is pointless, it doesn't give us anything. Chelsea need 2 to win going in and they will still need 2 to win.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

But they only need 1 to take it to extra time if we don't score.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

To be honest, I'm not too fussed about it. If we tell ourselves its still 0-0 and go for the win, we have that lead to fall back on if things dont go our way. As long as we dont rest on the lead, we'll be fine.
I just dont want us approaching the match as if we're already winning and becoming complacent.

EDIT
And another thing. We need to start playing Berba more and bringing Chicharito on late. I still think he's a better impact player at this stage in his career.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah Hernandez is much better at being an impact sub than Berbatov. Dimitar needs to start matches to show what he has, he doesn't have the acceleration and youth and energy that Javier can just bring out of nowhere in 80th minute instantly settling into a match... he needs to be in the rhythm from the start and I think he's earned it anyway.

Berbatov should be starting more chances (not always but in general) and Hernandez as big a fan as I am for now at least coming on more as a sub though it all depends on tactical decisions such as who oppositions' defenders are, etc. of course.

Anyway, here's an article about Tomasz calling time on his Man Utd career. Two goalies leaving Old Trafford this season then.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

That's been in the works for a while and is why Lindegaard was brought in to be the new #2.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Yeah. The guy's clearly not happy and I can understand why.

It's a good move for him I think. He needs to leave this summer, go to a club where he can be #1. Put in some good performances, regain his confidence and go to Euros in his homeland.

I can see why he wants to move on now at this point. I'd do the same.

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

So, looking for an explanation from a knowledgeable betting type guru:

Tonight's match on Betfair, you can bet on Chelsea going through, at 3.9/1
However, a Chelsea victory is shorter, at 3.5/1

How can this be the case? Surely given that they can only go through with a win means that the odds should be the same? And if you argue that maybe it could be a draw in regular time and they still go through, this would actually decrease the odds on a Chelsea qualification?

Just don't get it. But do have £20 on the Chavs doin us at home. Will make me feel better if it happens.

Also just put £10 on Arsenal winning the league...at 7.4/1! That's craziness. Win their game in hand and against us, and they're 1 point back. And those kind of odds!

Okay, enough of that. How are we feeling ahead of tonight?

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Nice to know that you're out to make yourself feel better....

also shows either the faith you have in tonite's match or the amount of money you have to just throw 30 pounds away...

but i digress, I think we have a great chance to win tonite and to head for a game versus Schalke...the lads seemed pumped and ready to go out for the kill...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

I like to think of it as emotional hedging. I ask myself: Would I give £20 for United to win tonight? (and as I'm not able to hit the pub for it, I'll save that anyway) and the answer is yes, I would.

So if we win, I view it as sunk, but if we lose, I get £60 to make myself feel better.

Anyway, it's probably a sign of weakness.

It would be utterly incredible if we came out and actually played to our potential tonight. Things have been slowly gathering momentum the last few weeks, and if we could finally, just once this season, play to the level that Fergie clearly believes we can, it could be a real victory for him and the squad.

That said, I expect us to be cagey, nervous and make this as tense as possible. It's what we do. Also a bit of fear about the ref, uber card happy, so better not have Scholsey out there!

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Man Utd line-up...Kuszczak; O'Shea, Smalling, Vidic, Evra; Gibson, Scholes, Anderson; Valencia, Berbatov, Nani. Subs: van der Sar; Brown, Fabio, Carrick, Park, Hernandez, Owen.

No Rooney.....i wonder why...he's not playing this weekend anywayz, and Gibson?? O'Shea??? I dunno, but i feel like i should pay those £20 as well...

I wonder if SAF has something in store...

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

All the media I'm reading says it's exactly hte same lineup as last week? Where'd you get that from?

Certainly Rio tweeted he'd be playing?

Edit, Sorry, O'Shea for Rafa and Nani for Hernandez (big mistake imo).

----------------VDS----------------
---O'shea----Rio---Vida---Evra-----
---------Carrick--Giggs------------

Re: Manchester United Supporters Thread.

Both Wrong

O'Shea/Nani In
Valencia/Rafael Out

Nani--Carrick--Park--Giggs
-----Rooney--Hernandez---

I think one team will come out the blocks flying, expect a goal in the first 15'
