Mafia 2

It should run alreight but for some reason keeps locking up on my son's PC (running XP) ahven't tried it on my Win 7 rig.

Jonney taking his mate bowling then sucking his cock? Why don't you hook up with Grim you won't even have to go bowling?

After playing the demo i'm not so impressed. Seems like just another GTA to me. The game looks good, but somehow it doesn't blow me away the way GTA did when i first played it.
Letting this one slide by.

this game looks amazing on PC with full graphics .. i can post some screens if anyone wants

Just watched the review on firstplay (via psn store) and it didn't sound great.

They spoke about the problems of no side missions or activities so while the game world is large, there isn't anything to do. You can go where ever you want.. but there isn't anything to do once you get there. And there isn't enough of a feel that the game world is a living breathing city.

Story is predictable but fun... but once you've done a great set piece you never get to experience it again.

I'm prepared to wait and see, the 1st game was so well written that I didn't miss the sandbox stuff. IMO I'd rather play a good scripted game than spend ages driving around looking for a pigeon or taking a girl bowling!

Shame, missed opportunity.
how?

first one was all about the story not the side missions. plus for me i dont give a fuck about side misisons. their pointless and boring. i care about the main story.

I dont mind side missions in MMO's that give u more skills and unlock new weapons and shit but what does side misisons bring on action adventure games? fuck all especially in GTA4.

pointless

So you wouldn't have enjoyed say running a protection racket in the game - hiring goons to look after the place and trying to fight off rivals? upgrading them and buying weapons... fighting to gain control of an enemies area etc...

How about having the ability to say rob banks or hold up security trucks at will and then get put into a police chase with random scripted events thrown in to make each chase you do different.

How about some dirty cop gives you a list of people he wants taking out and you have to stealth your way around the map and make sure you kill each target without being seen. Or he wants you to make one of the kills look like an accident and so you have to jump out of a moving vehicle at speed so it goes off into the distance and takes the guy out.

Maybe one of the mob guys has a list of people on a witness relocation program and he needs you to go and take them out.

With the money you make from the side missions you could upgrade your weapons, purchase new ones, purchase new clothing just for fun, maybe new cars, new music for the game... maybe even thrown in some purchasable cheats for when you've finished the game and would like to play around at he end.

Silly maybe - but it would be nice to at least have SOMETHING do do between or after the missions.
Hell... why not let us replay certain scenes in the game? Firstplay say there are some really memorable set pieces but that it's a big disappointment that these things never follow over into the rest of the game.. once you've done an amazing mission you're left with just a huge drive from one side of the map to the complete opposite just to hit a checkpoint to complete that mission. then the same huge drive back to start the next mission and then you can start having fun again.

TBH the protection racket stuff in The Godfather 2 game was one the biggest turn offs for me. It was far too distracting and I struggled to keep up with the story. In fact at the end of the game I ended up reading the wiki to find out exactly what had happened as I'd done that side missions I'd lost the plot.

I'm with biker and jonney on this, as long as the execution of the main story is as good as the first game, I'll be very happy. Side missions and upgrades would be a bonus, but the first didn't suffer for not having them as the story itself was long enough and meaty enough. I'm guessing races will be back though?

i dunno. i just dont like doing side missions in general. thats just me. i always do just the main quests/missions.

in fallou 3 i diddnt do a single side mission but instead went out exploring on my own killing anything that moves:WORSHIP:

So if the same side missions were actually part of the main storyline.. you'd play and be happy. But just the fact that they're not mandatory missions you don't bother with them?

Fallout 3 had some great optional side missions and most of them offered more than just travel here, shoot, mission done.

Yeah Fallout 3 is a bad example, it's a different beast being an RPG as the side missions are crucial to you levelling up and acquiring different abilities. They can also be stories in themselves that add to the main storyline, I don't mind doing them in fact I thought the side missions in Fallout 3 were better than the main storyline .

What I don't like are sandbox games that have meaningless side missions and mini games that don't really add anything to the story, they're just there to make the £40 game seem more value for money. This is why I never bothered with Just Cause 2, Mercenaries 2 or Saints Row 2.

side missions in fo3 were 100 times better than gta4. but like i said, i killed everyone so no side missions to do LMAO.wont make that same mistake on vegas though :) my point is many games have shit side missions. in GTA4 side missions are pointless and just slapped on to seem as if the game is good value for money.

im not getting mafia 2 for side missions, im getting it for the main story.

I did say earlier on that mmo/rpg's offer brilliant side missions while action adventure games dont and fo3 is not a action adevture game, its a RPG done in FPS mode.

Oblivion was excellent as well.

The first Mafia didn't have side missions or protection rackets and all the other stuff mentioned that were all in the Godfather games and it was one of the best games i have played

I thought the first one was a great game and I loved the ending to it. But I zoomed through it in no time at all without even trying to get it finished asap and then I was left with absolutely nothing to go back and do. I think it would just be nice to have a reason to play the game and have some fun outside of the missions once finished or halfway through the main story if you get stuck on a tough part.

Damn right! :)

The first game took me over 20 hours to complete but thats because I take my time and enjoy the game. I hate when people rush through games just to show off that they completed it so quickly. Savour the £40.

It is when new games here cost around £60, guess I'll pick a used copy up at some point :)
whats wrong with picking up the pc version. if you can play arma 2 fine than mafia 2 will be no problem and is cheaper than the console version.

You have no excuse ;)

I pre-purchased Mafia 2 on steam and got the original for free which wasn't bad for a pre-order gift.

Problem is I was disapointed with the demo, noticed all the things I really like about the original Mafia seem to have been removed for a GTA clone.

I loved the original is still one of the best games I ever played but they have removed so much of what I loved to make it more user friendly to appeal to the masses who will buy a GTA clone this year cos there is no GTA.

I am disappointed about no side missions as although there wasn't many in the original they only took 10 mins to do and you got an extra car for you garage and it was completly your choice if you done them or not.

I just hope their is a decent story like the original.
