gerd....you said the decline started under Benitez.....ok I do agree
with that...
but you will also agree that Benitez was responsible for very good
seasons just prior to that....so last season was a disappointment
for sure.

BUT...please realise it was a blip.....1 bad season out of 6.

What was the main reason for the decline?
Was it the players who suddenly turned bad ?
Alonso leaving, some bad signings and the injuries and Rafa's bad
man management were responsible....

But with a new manager, Hodgson who came in with new signings
should have lifted the club....why is it that he has failed to
even match what Liverpool achieved last year...albeit half way
through the season.

He was never the fans choice....he has done nothing to change
their minds...he has angered us several times with his tactics,
comments, cozying up to other managers, etc....

Yes he has done some good things like bring in some youth players...

BUT he has actually made things worse by trying to impose his playing
style on a team that only needed a few tweaks here and there.

He has failed in bringing out the best out of this team....
he has had enough time...and his constant defensive attitude about
his record and reputation are sickening....he sounds worse than Houllier
and Benitez in their last seasons....

We need a new younger manager, a new team devoid of "big" personalities
like Carragher and Gerrard....and build it around a younger squad...
Ship out the dross ....starting with Hodgson

If Rafa can be sacked at Inter....if Allardyce can be sacked at Blackburn...
then why on earth is Hodgson being given time....
a man who will not change his ways...who will sign "his" players....
who has constantly angered the fans and pleased other managers and the media.

Tbh I'm not sure getting rid of Hodgson will do much for this season. I think it all depends on who is available, I'd rather stick it out or maybe with Sammy as caretaker till the summer if that enables a really good manager to get the job then piss about now and do more damage.

The best option would be to get a top manager in now and give the players a 6 month job interview to see if they will stay at the club past the summer. And have 6 months to work with Comolli to target players and have a good pre-season.

It's not all Hodgson's fault, Gerrard and Torres have been poor since Xabi left and look like they are both fed-up. They need a big kick up the arse imo. And I only think that will happen if the club get a big name manager who has an even bigger ego.

everyone has an opinion on a "good season " or "bad season" most mutd n chelsea fans call it a "bad season" if they lose the title. Arsenal fans called a good season if they challenge for the title past March. Spurs over the moon for breaking into the top 4 spot.

Naturally mutd supporters can`t relate their playing below par and top of the league . I remember Rafa most of all was his team selection (hence selection is my theme atm) Gerrard looking at him "WTF are ya doing gaffer?" players lost all respect for rafa near the end. The power struggle was open for all to see. Roy on the other hand seems to listen to the players, almost like if their making the decision .

Dalglish in until the end of the season, by which time a CEO has been appointed and a full-time replacement can be arranged with plenty of time to research who the best man for the job would be. And Kenny would command the respect of the players so would gain support and motivation straight away.

dont know bout having dalglish in temporary.would like to remember dalglish as it is,legend.as much as i feel things would change 360,would dread it to go any other way(shearer at newcastle).would rather we just leave sammy in charge till we get deschamps or villa boas end of season(rijkaard now would be great as well).anyways itll be em two local lads managing the team with sammy in charge.@gerd,we just gonna have to disagree bout anything liverpool.can see your point on other team though.happy new year folks....

Good to see the media beginning to realize Hodgson's inadequacies....
it's not just the players who are not performing....the tactics are
terrible too.


I am not sure who we should hire...tbh....
Dalglish is a romantic idea....if it happens NESV will seem
like they are appeasing the fans.
But I have my doubts about how he will manage....
I can see the team getting better than they are now....
but he is not the long-term solution.

the 3 pts vs Bolton...and after that we can discuss issues...
ominous that he has not said anything supporting Hodgson....

For me it is someone who can bring attacking football,
with a world-class pedigree,
someone who will not cost a fortune,
someone players will respect,
who can attract other players....

to me that is Frank Rijkaard.....he is the only one available.

I totally agree with tik (although i agree that Hodgson should be sacked, if only to relieve him of this predicament).
I have a feeling that the players were fed up with Benitez and maybe rightly so, because it all became too much for them (don't forget that the average player is not very bright). Both Benitez and Hodgson adjusted afterwards. Benitez was uncharacteristically low key with Inter and Hodgson adjusted too much to the players' wishes.

I don't think Dalglish is a good option. Dalglish is a legend and everything he does now will inevitably taint him...i also think that Dalglish long inactivity is the reason why he logically should have problems with this generation of players. Liverpool either need a caretaker for the rest of the season or a high profile manager who has stayed active the last years. And that certainly isn't Rijkaard, he is immensely overrated.

I would only want Rijkaard if they get Ten Cate with him. Together they have done good jobs, but on his own I don't think he is strong enough.

My prefered choice would be Van Gaal, he has developed teams wherever he has gone and has had succes nearly everywhere. And he has a huge ego which will make the media happy (Jose-esque) and won't tolerate anything from the players. And he has done it for different teams aswell; Ajax (with their great youth), Barca, AZ (small team he built over a few seasons into champions) and now Bayern (big team but struggling in the CL).

I agre with you Tiktik but unfortunately Van Gaal has made it clear that when his contract in Bayern Munich finishes he is going to retire.
There is clearly no world class manager in the market, other than Benitez. If you want to bring another one then you are gonna have to look a manager that has a contract, and that is gonna cost a lot of money.

Good performance in general imo. 1st half was unfortunate (or crap defending) to concede as Liverpool had the better chances. 2nd half is how the team is supposed to play, higher up the pitch, pressing and having more possesion in their half.

However, to me it looked more like the players being pissed off, with their own performance or the manager I don't know, that changed the match. Gerrard was dragging the team with good performances around him that got the win. Not sure if it was any tactical difference.

I think that is one of the issues aswell, you can never tell whether it's the manager having a good influence or that the players started to perform by their own initiative. Quite a ridiculous season though, if they win the games in hand, with Blackpool not winning their's Liverpool can be 6th!

Either way he is a deadman walking, just depends for how long.

Funny to see Matt Le Tissier (Sky sports) saying this win may save Liverpool's season......ridiculous media....were they asleep in the 8 defeats we had?

Roy claims he has the support of the owners.
I get the sneaky feeling that they will persist with Roy until
we get a better manager....they don't seem to be the type
who will make a quick decision....but will bide their time.

And at this point no one but Rijkaard is available.
And they will probably just wait till summer....and rebuild
the team with more young players....Torres and Reina will leave...
Gerrard/Carra will be around...
Problem is .... I don't know if anyone will want to join.
It will probably be a long-term rebuilding project with less superstars..
maybe then we will see players playing for the shirt....
and a new dynamic manager given full reins to implement his 3-5 year plan.
As NESV stated...their aim is to win the League and/or CL in the next 5 years.

Roy's tactics for me are the issue....his rigid two banks of 4...
and the "quick" ball to the forwards.....reminds me a bit
like Houllier's dry but successful (underdog) tactics.
This can never be good enough for us....it's a backward step.
Houllier if you remember was great at stifling the big teams
and struggled when his team had to take the game to the opposition.
Hodgson seems similar in his approach....and not surprisingly Houllier
endorses Hodgson....take that with a pinch of salt.
Houllier claimed success for Istanbul....so not much credibility there.

Doesn't mean nothing. Remenber Mourinho had contract with Porto when signed for Chelsea. Personally I would love to see this guy at Anfield. He's a Mourinho prototype but even worse (although he says not) who likes to capture media's attention and constantly blame the referees. However tactically he's perfect, he reads the match like no one.

If you think Mourinho is a selfish and an arrogant guy wait until you see Villas-Boas!

By the way, I didn't understand why Gerrard started as a sub. Maybe Roy's craziness I guess...

According to Hodgson, Gerrard was fatigued (more than likely Hodgson had planned to start Gerrard but was told not to by Peter Brukner).


Several journalists seem to believe that Hodgson will be sacked very shortly with Dalglish taking over as caretaker manager until the summer when he was move back into his higher-up role and a new man brought in the manage the club. One name mentioned was Owen Coyle, now, i like Coyle, he's a good manager, but what has he done really to suggest he's ready to take over Liverpool? Yes he's got Bolton playing good football, but Hodgson did that with Fulham ffs.

A lot of speculation that Ralf Rangnick is in contention following his resignation at Hoffenheim. Seems like he knows his stuff, like he shares the same philosophy as FSG and likes his teams to play attractive attacking football.

Van Gaal would indeed be a good manager for a renewed Liverpool team.
Louis is a teacher and i'm not sure his methods would go down with the more experienced players.

It seems Gerrard was very good against Bolton. Superb assist for the first goal.

I could watch that first goal over and over, that's how we should be playing every week. Great chest by Ngog from Gerrards burst and a lovely clip over for a brilliant volley.

Agree with whoever posted previous in here that it looked like the players had no regard for the usual shit tactics and went to play as they would like to, this was confirmed when I seen Agger doing his maurading runs upto their goal, havent seem him do this in a while!

The thing is you say now that you never thought he was good enough for your club but I bet if you went back over the posts made by the 'pool fans when he was appointed they'd be mostly positive. I don't remember many of you taking the hump with him until a few weeks into the season. And all this talk of being in a relegation battle is such bullshit. If you win your 2 games in hand you go 6th by one point! It's such a tight league this season a couple of wins can really change your outlook, look how Chelsea went from streaking clear to fifth after a run of bad results. Funnily enough at this point last season you were in 7th place and had lost 7 matches so things aren't that much worse now.

Coyle is Scottish and played for Ireland! Maybe that's why he seems a decent manager, cos England don't make 'em. :)

Just consider him another one season wonder ( or atleast someone who is doing really well for a midtable team). Has no credentials to be the manager imo, flavour of the month and all that.

Glad it's not just me then. Was thinking what the reason was why I'm confused whether it's just the players playing how they want or actually tactical instructions. Then I realised that everytime the first half is shit and the 2nd is good the gameplay has been; fulham 1st half and Liverpool 2nd. Which makes me believe it's more Sammy getting into the players and just telling them to do what they know they should be doing (or the senior players stepping up). You can tell that tactically there isn't much going on when the players do go to autopilot as defensively the team is pretty crap and unorganised. Bolton could, and probably should have scored another in the 2nd half with their counters.

Plus Aquilani and Insua out on loan, who could both be convinced to come back by a new manager and a new style.

That is not a bad squad as some would like to make out. We've got new owners who are willing to back the manager with finances and support if necessary and on top of that we've had a bad season and a half - some of that down to things that have now gone, such as the previous owners - and as seen yesterday, the players that are there are screaming out for the chance to attack more, a new manager with an attacking style could really get us flying up there again, and i'm sure they can see that.

Other then not being in the CL next season I don't see a huge amount of negatives.

The owners seem to be progressive and sensible and look like they will develop the club (both squad and stadium), there's a decent 1st team (top4/5) in place (when a couple aren't injured, I'm looking at Agger and Aurelio) but lacking depth. If you show you know what the f#$k you are doing you will get patience and support from the fans, who can tell a top class manager from a midtable one. I find it amusing that the fans were getting it from all sides a couple of weeks ago and that Hodgson was good enough, now the media have changed their tune and they have gone quite again. That's not a dig at people on here, but in general. The youth academy is said to be very good (Barca's people are running it if I recall).

And I won't even use history as a reason.

You can say the club is stuck and being left behind by the other 5, but really with how shit the team has been this season, and how shit the rest of the teams have been this season, it wouldn't have taken much to actually be up in the top 4, 5 this year. As mentioned, win the games in hand and the club is 6th! Quick stat; Benitez managed to have a 87% points haul compared to the champions over the period he was in charge. Today that would be 4th place. Seeing as he was pretty crap (and Hodgson was/is really good), atleast that's what the mancs are always posting in here, means that we should be able to be fighting for a CL place this year. Seeing the points dropped that isn't an odd suggestion.

So the club is actually an interesting prospect for a top, young manager. In the summer it wasn't but now it is again.

I never said I thought Hodgson was wrong from the beginning....
initially I was hoping for Pellegrini or even Dalglish over Hodgson..
but when Roy got the job I supported him...and was bowled over
by his initial press conference promising pass-and-move attractive
football....but in the 1st match against Arsenal...I was amazed to
seeing us pinned back deep in the 1st half....and only after the
red card to Cole in the 2nd half we played a high pressure game
and could have won....from then on it was downhill even though
I supported him...but that support eroded on the complete lack
of improvement...
remember Rafa was sacked because of a mediocre 7th place....
Hodgson should be improving on that...
but he has been a misfit....and proved it increasingly in the
last 3 months.
I am sure others on this board never rated Hodgson from the off.

I dont believe we will be in a relegation battle....
we will be in a mid-table scrap with Bolton, Newcastle, Sunderland.
Two seasons ago we were one of the best in Europe...
sorry...but Hodgson has done nothing to prove he will take us back
anywhere close to that level.
He is a good mid-table manager for the EPL.
