he was never supposed to be part of italy squad at the world cup. he hasn't been in the squad for years now. not because he's not good enough of course.... but if u don't play u can't expect a call from the national team coach.
as for his price tag, guys, it's not like roma and benitez didn't know aquilani. both knew exactly what they were about to get themself into. and 20 millions euros was the only possible price for alberto, as if alberto wouldn't have been such a injury prone player, if alberto would have played, say 6\7 more matches per season in his last 3 seasons at roma, his price would have been around 35/40 millions.... and if he would have played even more than that (say +40 matches per season), roma wouldn't have sold him for any amount of money (they would have rather sold mexes).
aquilani is like an armani suit with a buttonhole missing. since it came out of the factory with a flaw, u can get it on the cheap in an outlet..... but the only reason why it costs 1.500 euros (instead of 4.000), it's because it has a flaw.... u might say 1.500 is way too expensive for a suit with a flaw, but that's because we're still talking about an armani (wich means, missing bottonhole apart, that's the highest quality money can get).
the same way u might consider 20 millions euros too much for a player that gets injured so often (and i might also agree with it)..... but that's because u guys have absolutely no idea what a fit aquilani (playing in a system that suits his game) can do.

I would normally call BS, but there are a few very decent teams still in it. Offcourse having Fulham in there aswell destroys any argument you could make.
Groan, I'll probably look like some blind Rafa defender here, but it's more my own curiosity to see how "good" the remaining teams are:
Benfica - ? - Last season knockout round
Liverpool - CL groupstage
Fulham - ...
Wolfsburg - CL groupstage
Hamburg - ?
Standard Liege - CL groupstage

Atletico Madrid - CL groupstage

No i dont think we are gonna sell him either, i raised the point because if like with robbie keane the club decided to sell,in the current situation there could be problems. It's not based on performance, it's based on the timing of payments. To date it's only been £5m. It's a bit of a desperate argument, imo, he cost £17m, regardless of when you pay it.

We used to have one of the best coaches in the world, Pako Ayestaran.
Totally agree. I saw him a lot in Roma and I know what Alberto is capable of. What a pitty that we have this awful medical stuff and I dont know who is our phisycal coach but it is incredible that all our players have problems with injuries.

Something that hasn't been mentioned though is Aquilani doesn't suit Liverpool's style of football either so even if he was to play most matches I'm not sure he'd play at his best anyway.

So far we've paid £8m i think, the rest isn't due to be paid til June 2011, i think the total comes to £17m.

A lot of his fee is based on appearances and CL qualifications and what-not, we could end up paying less, we could end up paying more.

yep. that's infact the reason why i always thought this was not a good move for both liverpool and alberto.
alberto is the most "vertical" midfielder in europe today. there isn't another midfielder that has his same sense of verticality (or uprightness) of football. on this concern he's much closer to a trequartista than a central midfielder (although he's not a real trequartista).
liverpool on the other side, is the most horizontal top team in europe today (and that's the obvious consequence of having a spanish coach, as the horizontal development of the play is the traditional trademark of the spanish school).
this peculiarity of liverpool's game is also the reason why u're struggling so much this season. horizontal football can work only as long as u have a damn good regista in the middle of the pitch. now u don't have it anymore, but the players still act as if xabi was still there (and that's what makes liverpool so flat and predictable).
and just to make the situation even more complicated, there's another thing to take into account. playing for years with a regista spoils the rest of the team. i'm not implying the players tend to become lazy, but they get used to that confortable feeling that the ball (better yet, the pass coming from the regista) is gonna create the opening, is gonna build the play.... and not their off the ball movement.
and it's really hard to detox from the regista addiction, to realise that the team doesn't have a fulcrum anymore and that it's up to each and every player to step up their own game to give some fluency to their football.
actually bringing in a player like aquilani might coming handy to help the players to "move on", coz aquilani has exactly the opposite impact on his teammates a regista usually has. while the regista effects his teammates by "calming them down", by making them feel more confortable, aquilani keeps everyone around him in a constant "alert status" that, long term, changes their way to interpretate the game. alberto is not a guy who gets the ball and tries to do everything on his own. he demands partecipation from his teammates, he involves them in his game (and u can notice this by watching how many one-twos he tries). and this, in the long term, tends to bring his teammates in his same wavelenght.
but.....
for alberto to have such a huge influence on his teammates will be almost impossible. first of, coz he barely speaks the language. second, coz he's not a famous star (i believe most of his teammates didn't really saw him playing before he joined liverpool), hence they can't have that sort of trust in him required to allow him to change their game. and 3rd (and most important) coz he won't ever be able to have such an influence on the team if he doesn't play on a consistant basis..... and aquilani's history tells us he's never played more than 35 matches per season.
and the fact that liverpool already has 2 mezz'ali (gerrard and benayoun) certainly doesn't help him either, for 2 reasons.
1- it drastically decreases his chances to play in that position, pushing him backwards as a pure central midfielder.
2- playing as a central midfielder with a mezz'ala ahead of him (gerrard) his ability to break the tempo of the play becomes useless, coz he obviously can't just skip the whole 3\4 of the pitch (wich would be his normal instinct) and accelerate the rhythm of the plays.

well i can't really talk about liverpool's medical staff, as i don't know about it, but i'm afraid having the best medical staff in the world would help that much, as the main problem here is alberto's fragility itself (and since u know him from his roma days, u'll obviously know what i'm talking aboutliverbird said:

If you look at Liverpool´s players you will see that almost all of them got injuries problems. Benayoun, Riera, Fabio Aurelio, Gerrard, Torres, Aquilani Glen Johnson, Skrtel and Agger, for example. There were also a lot of bad diagnosis, being Torres, Gerrard and Aquilani cases the most representatives.
Anyway, next season we will find out. We have brought in Peter Bruckner, who has an impressive curriculum and is very well known and has contributed to a lot of science investigation. He is also the doctor that fixed Harry Kewell. What an irony that his deal was confirmed the same day that Alberto had a setback with his ankle.

Brilliant performance by the referee there.
Would've taken 2-1 before the match and thought we did well enough tonight, especially considering we went down to ten men so early in the game.

A good game on paper ruined by a dreadful refereeing performance. I have a lot of respect for some of the talent Benfica have, but there were some seriously shoddy violent, sly and petulant play coming from them and it ran through to the fans, who very nearly got the game stopped and a 3-0 awarded to Liverpool.
I would list about everything he did wrong, but I think most people know already.
How Luisao (not just for the Torres/Babel Incident) or David Luiz werent sent off I dont know.
Considering the circumstances, not a bad result, but with the amount of set pieces we had and those Torres chances....could've been a hell of a lot better.
2nd Penalty was correct, albeit not deliberate. First penalty was a joke, he span round to get the ball and fell over before he was touched. Aimar? wasnt it, who had dived for a pen 5 mins prior to that and wasn't booked.

No, I didnt write it correctly. What I meant was that he was the doctor that finally fixed Kewell´s problem. Now, in Galatasaray, he isnt having problems with injuries.

Don't agree at all. Luisão and David Luiz got yellow carded when they should have. Babel, besides putting his hands all over Luisão's face, clearly said something that made the ref pull out the red card.
If Cardozo had scored half his chances you would be in real trouble.

Some idiots aren't representative of all fans. When those bombs went off, the stadium in unison chanted someting like "Stupid clowns, stupid clowns" to those idiots in particular. And that was actually good for Liverpool, Benfica lost some momentum after those incidents.
And diving? There were a lot of dives from Liverpool players as well, but as usual, there's some hipocrisy in some English fans, "only the other teams dive, not ours..."
