Re: Liverpool Thread
well I'm out of my mini depression. The other night was horrible, just one of those horrible nights football can throw at you.
Hate how it was classed as a classic counter attacking performance. Villa defended well in the first half and closed down the midfield, yes..but the first goal? No-where near a villa player, a very unlucky deflection, the ball came at Lucas very quick and he didnt have time to get behind it properly. The goal came after several missed sitters from Pool and was very much against the run of play. Although with the amount of silly freekicks we were giving away, I thought it was inevitable. AV are a very good set piece team.
The 2nd goal, was fair enough, badly defended, but it was 3 minutes into stoppage time, and the 3rd was just a mad rush of blood to Gerrards head. No dount the set piece defending (and attacking) has to improve. We werent troubled at all from open play, and in the 2nd half it was Brad Friedel yet again who won the game for Villa.
Just a shame that many fans/commentators and so called "experts" will slate him despite the fact he was one of our better players that night (although no-one close to his stoke performance). I think he got dispossed once on the edge of the box because he dwelled a bit (because no-one made a run) and the commentators starting saying how hes too slow for the PL.
Gerrard was a worst player that night. Too many flicks, dwelled on the ball, couldnt even strike the ball properly. Funny thing is, I didnt see Lucas or anyone else berating him for all the overhit back passes and balooned shots.
Torres was poor yes, he was getting very rough treatment and the ref was giving him nothing. His shirt was ripped ffs within the first 10 minutes and elbows were flying into his air when he was challenging for the ball. But I'd expect nothing less from a MON team. Thing is, even when he's playiang shit and not holding the ball up properly he still manages to score. His positioning in the box is excellent. 2 goals in 3 games for someone who looks like hes been kept up all night but his new sprog isnt too bad.
I'm not too worried. The kneejerk reactions from Press and fans alike is quite amusing at times. Suddenly we were a 4man team, down to a 3man team when Alonso went, but before that we were merely a 2man team.
The players will click, and the cobwebs will blow out. We have some brilliant players to come back into the mix. Aurelio, Agger, Aquilani, Reira
Positives last night? Insua. Could have got forward a bit more but he set up the goal and was so comftable in possesion and in defence. Even won the majority of his aerial battles!
And Voronin I thought. His first touch is excellent, hes a good option to have, he finds space in between the mifield and defence and you can ping the ball into him knowing its not going straight into a defender. Again, he helped to create the goal, and we looked more dangerous with him on the pitch.
Glenn Johsnon was great again, but didnt get forward as much on the outside of the defender as he did against Stoke.
