Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

You don't want to see a backup striker come in?

We're still being strongly linked to Negredo, anyone know much about him?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Not sure about the back-up striker, I mean which top quality player will want to be second choice and cost a packet. Would rather it be shared between Kuyt, Babel and Ngog. Admittedly you would have to play them all at the same time to be as effective as Torres but still....

Re: Liverpool Thread

The problem is that a league-winning side relies on having more than one top striker and if Torres picks up injuries again next season then I worry about us getting the goals needed while he's out with the likes of Babel, Kuyt and Ngog standing in.

Looks like Arbeloa is off then.

I think that Kuyt playing in the position of Torres is great, remember how much goals he scored in Feyenord, he is much much better than Babel and Ngog.

Are we going to sell Yossi ?

Re: Liverpool Thread

I very much doubt Benayoun will be leaving.
So if Benayoun stays if Torres is injured he can play in the position of Kuyt and Kuyt in the position of Torres. Anyway, I think that we need to buy a player like Saviola, good, that is not going to be into the 11 but he can apport good things when Torres isnt playing and that is cheap.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Come on guys, Rafa's transfer record is pretty poor to be fair. Whether or not he wanted Keane, he didn't gave him a chance to fit in the system and sold him at a loss 6 months later. Same with Dossena really. Babel is clearly not happy and having confidence problems or being played out of position but Rafa doesn't seem to be trying to remedy it. Players like the ones Mathero mentioned plus Mark Gonzalez, Josemi and so on are all Rafa buys, there's very little chance you'd have signed any of them if somebody else had been manager, not to mention the fact your youth and reserve teams have been steadily filling with young Spanish lads since he became manager, yet all the blame for their failings goes on that guy he sacked a couple of months ago.

Your turnover of players during his reign has been really quite high and I just find it hard to believe he's had little say in the dealings and targets. All this just makes me think it's not quite fair to attribute all the blame on Parry and co, whilst painting Rafa as some kind of talent spotting transfer genius.

Yeh, it's very poor to be fair. Torres, Mascherano, Alonso (10M!), Kuyt, Yossi, Agger, Skrtel, Reina, Arbeloa, Aurelio all terrible buys. And Luis, Crouch, Momo were poor buys as well....

The only reason Rafa's bought so many players, is that he didn't have the money to rebuild the team instantly, so he had to buy stop gap players, and then sell them at a profit.

Had enough discussion of this already. Rafa's transfer record is good, some rather brilliant buys, with some poor ones, most of whom were sold at a profit.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Well said Abhi. Considering we could be selling Arbeloa for £5m (and that's only because he's in his last contract year) when we bought him for £2.5m, Alonso could go for any figure over £25m when we signed him for £10m, Leto is likely to go for just over the same price we signed him for, and Voronin was a free transfer who is meant to be going to Hertha Berlin for £6.5m.

We've had this discussion before, no manager makes perfect signings, even Whiskeynose.

Re: Liverpool Thread

My point was what I said in the last line. He's not some transfer genius like you all seem to be saying, and Rick Parry is not to blame for every single transfer that hasn't worked out.

Nobody's blaming Rick for players we've bought. It's about the players we haven't bought that he's fucked up.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Well the general impression I get from this thread in paticular is 'Now Parry's gone and Rafa's in control, we'll sign quality and do great deals'.

You mention Alonso as a great buy, which he was for sure, but Rafa was selling him last summer and for at least £8m less than you'd get for him now. To be honest you're bloody lucky it didn't go through cos Xabi as you know was outstanding and the fact if you do sell him now you'll make a fuck sight more.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Need I remind you that it was Rafa himself who refused to sell to Juve because they didn't meet his selling price.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Exactly, so he was quite happy to sell him! Compare it to this season where he's point blank refusing to even consider the idea, which is basically an admission that selling Xabi would have been a huge mistake.

If Juve had have paid that extra £4m he'd be playing in black and white and last season could've been very different for you guys without arguably your best player.

Re: Liverpool Thread

You don't need a backup striker at all. Gerrard will cover the goals whenever Torres is missing and the likes of Babel/Kuyt will be good enough for the 4 or 5 games he will miss.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Time for Darby to make a step up if Arby is going, I just can't see Degen staying fit to have an impact on the season!

And Lucas and Emiliano Insua.
I think that Rafa may not be Wenger, but his buys are still excellent.

Maybe Berbatov and Hargreaves were better buys, dont you think ?

@ Jumbo,

You should give this album a try:

Re: Liverpool Thread

Seen you guys linked with Lee Cattermole today, I think he'd be a quality signing. He's been really impressive at times and is still only 21, he'd boost your English contingent and would be a good replacement for Mascherano if he decides to leave in the next season or two. He just needs to work on his discipline really but at least you'd actually get a couple of red cards a season if he was in the team :D I dont think he'd break the bank either unless a bidding war started between you and the Spuds.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Seems Aurelio got crocked playing footie with his kids and will need surgery. Guess that means Dossena will get another season to prove himself.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Newspaper reports claim Xabi Alonso has moved a step closer to leaving Liverpool after saying his goodbyes to members of the Anfield backroom staff, and that the club have placed a £35m price tag on the rumoured Real Madrid target...

Re: Liverpool Thread

Can someone tell me whats the reason of the 'Stop...Babel Time' pun for Ryan Babel? Is it just because of his rap songs or something else?

Yes. It seems that Madrid is going to offer the 41m € Rafa pretend from Xabi Alonso. Horrible notice.

Seems that Ferguson wants Aguero, excellente good notice cause he's really overrated. Atlethico Madrid was Forlan.
