Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

if he comes out and says what he wants , it may not happen and he could be left in a difficult position.

especially with the media being involved best not saying to much and let things get settled behind closed doors, which i expect things to be further along than the press make out

think of ronaldo with him saying he will be a man utd player next season, all the fans were disappointed at least he isn't doing that to our fans

That's Ronaldo though, he's a slimy muppet anyway. I'd expect Alonso to be more up-front and respectful than say something like that.

At this stage, Alonso will have spoken to Madrid and decided whether he wants to go. He'll have also spoken to Benitez and gave an indication on where he wants to go, and Benitez will have a price in mind if he is to be sold.

So hopefully Rafa will sit down with Alonso, find out one way or another whether he wants to stay or not and if he wants to go, then get in touch with Madrid and give them the price. Alonso will have a pretty good idea from speaking to Madrid of whether the move would be likely to happen so he needs to come out and say he wants to leave for X reasons (tax reasons, family etc).

I just don't think it's fair to come out and say he'd have no problem staying here or playing at Madrid. Either come out and say I want to stay at Liverpool and that's the end of my comments or I'd like to leave (and not necessarily to Madrid as Juve are also interested).

Re: Liverpool Thread

What is up with footballers these days. It's just ridiculous imo. You've got a great job, stop whoring yourself about. Something has fundamentally changed between player and club power - and I think it really sucks that players are now able to basically screw clubs to their hearts content.

Players like Gerrard, Hyypia, Giggsy etc are from a different age it appears.

That's a problem with getting Spanish/Latin players. For them, United or Liverpool will never be the biggest clubs. They've grown supporting Milan or Madrid.

That's why I'd prefer us to have more English players. We'd be the biggest club for them. With Johnson, you know we're the biggest club for him. No chance of him wanting to go to Spain or Italy.

Re: Liverpool Thread

From Phil McNulty's blog on BBC Football

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has moved to address weaknesses in the full-back position by paying £17.5m for Portsmouth's Glen Johnson. Johnson is much-improved player, but this is an eye-watering amount for a defender.

Eye-watering amount? Really? Ferdinand for £30m? Sergio Ramos for €27m? I'm sure there's countless others.

Sloppy press. Again.

exactly, a lot is being made of Johnson's price in the press, if United had paid it they'd be talking about how the price is fair because he's England's first choice right back.

Plus when you consider how prices have rocketed lately, £17m isn't much by any standard but £30m when another defender named Ferdinand was signed years ago when transfer fees were far lower than today is okay.

Re: Liverpool Thread

XABI ALONSO has urged Liverpool and Real Madrid to sort out his future.

The 27-year-old midfielder has returned to Spain following the Confederations Cup in South Africa to hold talks with his agent.

Alonso now has three weeks off before he is due back at Melwood for pre-season training and says he wants the long-running transfer saga settled before then.

“I do not know what will happen,” Alonso said.

“It is up to the two clubs to negotiate now.”

Reports in Spain suggest Real are hoping to pay just £20million for Alonso but if Liverpool do reluctantly sell him it is believed they will demand a fee far closer to £30million.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez wants to keep Alonso but accepts there is little he can do if the player wants to leave.

Alonso has so far refused to come out and publicly make his intentions clear.

“It is always positive when various teams are said to want you because that is better than nobody being interested, but I cannot say much more,” Alonso said.

“I know that I have to keep playing well and will be able to decide what happens next whenever it arises.

“I do not think a move to Real Madrid is impossible, but I would also have no regrets at all staying at Liverpool.

“My relationship with Benitez is professional. I’ve already been in England five years and the truth is that I have adapted well.

“I’m happy there, though I do miss certain things from Spain. I cannot rule out a move or even staying in the Premier League.

Anyone else reading that as he wants to leave then? The second bolded text is interesting as well, Chelsea or Man City also interested then?

Totally agree. Dont understand why he would want to leave. Xabi Alonso, Carragher and Gerrard are about to be legends (Gerrard already is), no Champions for 20 years > the come and win it. No Premier for 20 years > this year they are going to win it.

Re: Liverpool Thread

What Ronaldo did to us was worse. I no longer have a problem with him leaving, its the fact that he lied to us by saying that he's staying is where the problem was. Other than that, I think theres nothing wrong with either Alonso or Ronaldo leaving their clubs. Just cuz we support a team, it doesnt mean we get the right to tell the players where and how they live their life. If Alonso wants to go then let him cuz if he cant see that he can be a legend at Anfield then thats his loss. It was the same with Ronaldo. He had almost reached legendary status before the age of 24 but because of his lack of loyalty, players like Giggs are gonna be remembered well before Ronaldo.

Gerrard's not the best example in that case ;)

You're right, he's going overboard with that comment and the fact we pay our license fee to pay for him to write a blog on a non-subject is pretty poor from the BBC.. nothing new there. There have been quite a few defenders who cost a fair bit more than that and Ferdinand who you mentioned has cost more twice! I suppose if he said right or left backs in this country he'd be a bit closer to the truth, there's only Bosingwa at £16m I can think of that's even close to what you've paid for Johnson but at the end of the day, it's a seller's market at the minute and like you say for the best available English right back, it's not too bad a price.

Back to Alonso, on top of all the other human factors mentioned, I really think what happened last summer is a big part of him considering leaving. It must have really strained the relationship between him and Rafa. I know he's said they're 'professional' but that sounds a bit like they co-operate for the club and not much else. Anyway, like someone said, if you get a decent price for him it's no bad thing, you should be able to replace him with somebody.

Yep, it's always next year. ;)

Re: Liverpool Thread

We didn't really get a chance to see him unfortunately, I believe we have a 50% sell-on clause though.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Looks like Alonso is off, if anything it sounds more like he's making sure he doesn't lose his loyalty bonus by saying he wants to leave. Doesn't matter though, we have Lucas......

Re: Liverpool Thread

:APPLAUD:
This year Im pretty sure that we are going to win it. If last premier we finished 2nd when Gerrard and Torres played together in very few matches and with Manchester having the best of world, this year without Cristiano and if Torres and Gerrard are in good shape, we are going to win it.

Re: Liverpool Thread

14.04 Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has dismissed press reports suggesting the Serie A side had entered the race to sign Spain international midfielder Xabi Alonso from Liverpool.

Re: Liverpool Thread

lucas has nothing on alonso, you guys are going to miss him as much as you would if torres or gerrard left.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I was being sarcastic.....Lucas doesnt offer anything IMO, he doesnt have the drive and power to replace masch and he doesnt have the passing ability to replace Alonso.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Will Real have the money for Alonso? They're fucking crazy.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Portuguese press says you want Falcão from River Plate. Crap, almost a done deal for Benfica and now... :(

Re: Liverpool Thread

Falcão is probably the best striker in Argentina 1ª Division. He is a dynamic striker noted for his ability to finish with both feet, he has pace and intensity on his play. He also got good header skills. River will let him go for about 4M€.
