Benitez signs long-term Reds deal

Benitez won the Champions League with the Reds in 2005
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has ended speculation over his future at Anfield by signing a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2014.

The 48-year-old Spaniard has signed after protracted negotiations which put a doubt over his tenure at the club.

But Benitez said: "My heart is with Liverpool, so I'm delighted to sign this new deal.

"I love the club, the fans and the city and with a club and supporters like this, I could never say no to staying."

Benitez has penned the five-year contract after just over a week in which he has led his team to two of his most impressive wins since taking over in 2004.

The Reds beat Real Madrid 4-0 in the second leg of their last 16 Champions League tie and win 5-0 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

They then went to Old trafford and came back from a goal down to win 4-1 against arch-rivals Manchester United in the Premier League.

Benitez added: "I always made clear I wanted to be here for a long time and when I complete my new contract it will mean I have spent over a decade in Liverpool.

"The club is greatly respected around the world due to its incredible history and tremendous heritage.

"It is my aim to uphold those values and help create a new chapter in our history.

"Throughout this process, I would like to thank the owners for their hard work in finalising the deal.

"All of us at the club want the same thing, which is to be successful by winning major trophies."

The rumours over Benitez's future reached a crescendo before the first leg of the tie against Real Madrid, although he insisted after the 1-0 win at the Bernabeu that talks were continuing and he was confident of staying.

Benitez guided the Reds to victory in the Champions League final against AC Milan in 2005 and Liverpool beat West Ham to claim the FA Cup in 2006.

They again reached the Champions League final in 2007 but lost out 2-1 to AC Milan.

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks said: "It is wonderful news that Rafa has made a long-term commitment to the football club.

"Since he became manager in 2004, he has been responsible for the great progress we have made.

"I know he will continue to build on his achievements as he has a tremendous hunger and desire to bring more success to the club - success our fans and everyone connected with the club deserves."

Fellow co-owner George Gillett added: "With Rafa continuing to manage the team, we can look forward to more great football and success on the pitch.

"He has special abilities and qualities which are admired here at the club and around the world.

"Coming after our excellent wins over Madrid United and Real Manchester, this gives us great momentum going into the final stages of the season."

Good news, stability can only be good.

Re: Liverpool Thread

this result people highlights how poor madrid are nowadays - the fallen giants i may say, no one fears playing liverpool in europe any more, they cant cut it - i stand by what i said! AND YOU'RE GONNA CRASH AND BURN AT OLD TRAFFORD - time 12:45, REVENGE IS ON!!!!

ahh why did you have to ban him? hahahahahahaha

if he'd have carried on like this Liverpool would win the league and the European Cup! Everything he predicts is totally off! haha

I'm glad he's fucking banned can you imagine the outroar he would have caused no doubt he would have made it personal by mentioning Michael Shields as well as this year being the 20th Anniversary of Hillsborough so I'm glad he's fucking banned! Things like that do not need to be bought up

Re: Liverpool Thread

May be good to get it out of the way to be honest. I'd hate to see that as a final in Rome. It would be hell.

Re: Liverpool Thread

We could have Shankly managing us still and Tim would still hate on Liverpool ;)

Re: Liverpool Thread

Seriously though, you're trying to push to win the title and this man plays 0 strikers for half your games! I don't understand him at all. Plus he knew that Robbie Keane was going back to Spurs in January but failed to have a replacement striker lined up, and now this is costing you.

Re: Liverpool Thread

It didn't cost us against Madrid or United ;)

I don't blame Rafa as much as Parry for not getting a replacement. Rafa could only identify targets, it wasn't his job to actually put a bid together (that was Parry) and he had his hands tied.

Now that Parry is going and Rafa has a new contract (with what everyone believes now gives him FULL control over transfers) I wouldn't expect us to repeat the Keane situation. I also expect us to properly compete for quality players instead of Parry bumbling up deals for players like Simao, Ronaldo and Daniel Alves. Idiot.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Yep, we were interested in Cristiano before United made a move for him but Parry ballsed that up as well I believe.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Congrats on keeping Rafa, that and getting Torres will be the two smartest moves the board make this decade. I'm still not convinced he'll win the league, but he is the best man for the job, so glad he's staying. Will make next year much more interesting, imo.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Am I the only one that doesn't buy that Ronaldo story? Wasn't he going to stay at Sporting for another year or two until United begged Fergie to sign him after the played?

Is it one of those, Jorge Mendes called every coach in the top 10 clubs in Spain, England and Italy to say he had this tricky winger? And that's now translated into Ronaldo would have joined Liverpool had Parry not said no?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Ronaldo was way too young to judge. He could have easily been another Pongolle, or Le Tallec under Houllier. We'll never know.

But Simao, and Alves. The two deals that really, really hurt. Would have taken our flanks to another level. Imagine Simao on the left, Alves on the right, and Gerrard and Torres in the center. Urgh....

no, Liverpool actually had talks and a fee of around £8.1m was agreed in principle, shortly after this United made a bid of £12.2m which surprised everyone, Liverpool pulled out and the rest is history.

Re: Liverpool Thread

The story of Fergie missing out on Torres/Masherano is even better :D

And yes, we were a Ginger Twat O.G away from quite possibly the most mental CL Final even. Thousands of Scousers and Mancs descending on one of the most lawless cities in the world, infamous for its hooligan problems.

Mind you so is Rome!

Re: Liverpool Thread

Atleast you guys didnt have Peter Kenyon. We should have had Ronaldinho during the time he was reaching his peak but Kenyon messed that one up big time.
But the guy we bought instead wasnt too bad either.

Re: Liverpool Thread

anyone see the results of the rehearsal draw this morning?

Arsenal - Chelsea
Man Utd - Liverpool
Barcelona - Villereal
Porto - Bayern Munich

hahaha UEFA are shit.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I wonder why they publish the results of a rehearsal draw?

Does that mean the ball warming/cooling technique worked on the English teams then? I actually think it'll be:
United v Arsenal
Liverpool v Villareal
Porto v Cheslea
Bayern v Barcelona
