Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Great win yesterday, congrats. Completely stopped Chelsea playing football, very akin to the United match. You guys are great at making great teams look ordinary. Plus some of the passing in the second half was superb, certainly a team with confidence.

But...I still don't think of the course of the season you have the squad to take it. Will be nice having 4 teams competing for once though!

Re: Liverpool Thread

Don't think Hull quiet have the squad to make it through.

Very cheeky. Yes I will confess my team are hitting a bit below their weight at the moment. However one figures that at some point Ronaldo will remember where the goal is - last season whatever you want to say about him you can't knock his finishing - and when he does we'll be in much better shape. We were terrible against you guys, but it still took duffed shot into the ground and a VDS/Brown mixup to get the ball into the net. And that was the worst I've seen us play in about 3 years.

At the moment all is going Pool's way and you need to build a big ole lead while you can. Cause once the CL comes a calling, you can bet Rafa is going to have issues. Keane cannot lead your line by himself, and Torres can't play every match. In the end I think that'll be the downfall. Guess we'll see in May!

Well, my comment was aimed at Arsenal, but I guess it applies to United too! ;)

Oh, and I'll never write off United. They've been there and done it, and they'll be thereabouts come May. Doesn't matter how far behind they are.

Think it's crucial we build on this lead now. Not confident myself that we can come from behind and win it like United last season. So, we need to set the pace. Got a easy run till the Arsenal game, and we need to try to gain some more points.

The CL games is the least of my worries. We're leading the group, us and Atletico are pretty much through. Got 2 games at home, and I'd expect us to win at least one of them, so qualification is straightforward (what a change from last year!). Not too worried about the squad either. I think we've got a very, very strong squad. We've got ridiculous cover at center back and center mid, and loads of attacking options now. You say Keane can't lead the line (and I'd agree), but what he can do is play as a strike partner to anyone in the squad (Torres, Babel, Kuyt, Ngog). Plus, Babel lead the line brilliantly in his cameo yesterday. Kuyt's been scoring when Torres was out, and Keane is bound to go on one of his scoring runs. Riera and Kuyt both have been excellent on the wings, and Babel can't even get a start despite being on fire, and Benayoun's performed every time he's played. Not to mention El Zhar who's made an impact every time he's come on.

Plenty of options, and plenty of depth. What does worry is the consistency. That's going to be the main thing. If we can avoid a dip in form as long as the one we had last season (no win in 6 games) then we'll be thereabouts too.

Oh, and another thing. This 'Liverpool are average without Gerrard and Torres' has now be proved as bullshit. We now have Keane, Kuyt, Riera, Alonso, Babel all capable of winning games. So it doesn't matter if Torres can't start every game.

Ah the age old, scientific argument of we beat x team and they beat you, therefore we're better than you. Very clever. Aristotle-like logic. By that token then, every team that beats Stoke are clearly better than Pool. Erm. No.

The reason you'll find us United and Chelsea (and Arsenal) fans not running for the hills is that over the past 5 years (ish) Pool have always had a 'great' squad at the beginning of hte season, the line being that Rafa has finally cleared out all the dross he inherited and made some astute signings and now they have a squad that can challenge. Obviously this year it's looking better, but Pool havent' shown for almost 20 years that they have what it takes to last til May. Arsenal, Chelsea and United have, consistently. (Ok Chelsea just since oil injection, but since then).

Personally I think its great that Pool are finally challenging cause it'll make things more interesting than money (red) versus money (russian). But I really don't think you guys should be getting too cocky just yet. I've watched almost all of your matches and while obviously you've won a lot of them, I haven't sat back and gone, man, that's a title-winning team. Maybe I'll be proven wrong and if so, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong, but like I said to Abishek, you better hope you ride out the wave of good fortune you've currently got into a big lead, because Chelsea and United will still be the teams to beat in May.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I dont think Liverpools squad is a issue, they have a top quality squad and the only reason people may think its light is since Chelsea (and us to some degree) have Football Manager type squads. The one thing for me is, Liverpool currently our on form and still aren't blowing teams away like we and Chelsea do when were on our same runs, there instead grinding out the results so it will be interesting to see when Liverpool get a dip in form (inevitable, every team has atleast 1 a season) and if they can still keep winning.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Hmm I dont think we're even out of 2nd gear thats why we are grinding results.

Once we click we will be back to winning 3-0, 4-0 at home etc

Our squad doesnt have the depth of United or Chelsea but there is competition for places everywhere. I think the january transfer window will be important if we are still in the hunt after Christmas. If we manage to bring in a couple of players who can come of the bench, or start who can create and score goals, we will be in a much better position.

Only thing I can see is that I bet Arsenal will beat you home and away, and we'll beat you at Old Trafford.

Might not happen, but it's just how I see things going. Draw with Chelsea at Anfield as well?

We're nowhere near our best. The way we started the season, was our dip in form. We kept winning.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I'm always more confident about beating Chelsea and United than I am Arsenal. I just think Arsenal are the only team really capable of ripping us (or anyone apart) if they are on a roll or catch us on a bad day.

Saying that we did quite well last year ;) and the year before that ;)

:CONFUSE: Last year in the CL it could have gone either way and in the league it was 2 draws. The year before that it was a win apiece in the league but we beat you in both cups at Anfield, 6-3 and 3-1 respectively :BOP: and you think that you did quite well??

Pretty confident in us nullifying just like we did to Chelsea. Wenger is quiet naive tactically, so I'm confident. Long way to go yet.

I don't agree, We'll have to see but for me you've peaked.

Peaked? Hardly. Keane still isn't playing to his best, Dossena needs more time to settle, Riera is still new, and needs time to forge partnerships with the forwards, Agger is only just back to the team, Mascherano is still to get into full flow, and Torres is quiet away from the player that ended last season. Only Alonso and Kuyt are playing to their full potential, and the team itself can still play better. Let's be honest, we were poor in all games before the United game, and we won. It's only against Everton, United and Chelsea that we've played to our potential. There's more to come from this team.

Yes we did quite well given the respect and fear I have for Arsenal when playing them. Take the compliment.

I don't think you're a better team than us, but I think you have the imagination to beat us even if we played like we did again V Chelsea.

Theres no way we've peaked, we might have a run or poor results or dissapointing results eventually, but we've been nowhere near our best. We've shipped quite a few sloppy goals which isnt like us at all. Torres has been stop start this season, with injuries, Keane hasn't settled, Reira is still new and settling despite his performances so far, Dossena is getting better every game, Masherano has had niggling injuries and is being flown all around the world every international break and isn't back in time for games. Gerrard isn't even close to his usual best (end of last season he was out of this world). Agger has only played a few games this year.

Last season we were close than most people thought. If we had got the results against United and Chelsea that we've had so far this season for example (6 point swings) then we would have at least have been in the title race in the last few weeks of the season. And this would have been despite a poor run up to Christmas and the early part of the new year, with poor results (draws mainly) and the shadow of player/manager/board/fan unrest.

If Liverpool keeps it self out of the media spotlight (will be hard with the current financial climata) and maintains its solid defensive base with an added cutting edge in attack (Reira, Keane, Torres, Babel, Gerrard, Kuyt) then hold onto your hats.

I think if we get three points tomorrow the camp will be flying. It will show we can follow up impressive results and get down to the basics. Whilst pompey are a top team, we usually don't have problems with them at Anfield, and the shock of losing Harry could work either way, its tricky. We have to show that we don't fold when the pressure is on us to attack and force the issue.

congrats guys!! you guys played well.... we bottled it big time!!! Guess we needed Ballack on field!! Congrats anyway!!

Re: Liverpool Thread

Good Result, decent performance, poor finishing.

Last 5 mins was hell. I can't believe how much pressure we invited by not keeping the ball. Sometimes I wish Anfield was a bigger pitch. I don't think we have the technique in our squad to keep the ball in tight spaces.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I think Mourinho's team won their first 10 or something.

Still, 8 wins, and 2 draws is incredible.

Re: Liverpool Thread

They won the first 10? Blimey.

I can't complain really, but there were some worrying signs in this game. Notably a lack of confidence in front of goal (though no torres or keane) and how we lost composure in the last five mins and stoppage time.

Think we missed Aggers abillity to bring the defence up further.

Still, we should have some fresher players now, well thats the idea anyway.

I cringed when I saw the teamsheet tonight, and then saw the bench and felt a bit better.
