Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Maybe Rafa's idea is not to play wide men at all, and bringing width from full backs.

I'm pretty sure that is the case, I'm also thinking I've seen Rafa saying he wants to play this way as well.

Re: Liverpool Thread

4-3-3? I could see that working but you would have problems with your LB position.

------------Reina-------------
Degan-Carragher--Agger--Dossena
-----------Mascherano---------
------Barry-------Gerrard----
----Keane--Torres--Babel---

Something like that? Hmmm....not bad but i still have my doubts. :))

4-4-2

------------Reina-------------
Degen-Carragher--Agger--Dossena
-----------Mascherano---------
------Gerrard------Barry------
-------------Babel------------
---------Keane---Torres-------

Can't see why LB would be a problem? We just spent 7M on Dossena, and have Aurelio as well as Insua.

Re: Liverpool Thread

"We knew that we could only spend money by selling players and we have been doing this (for Keane)," said Benitez.

"We are still trying to sign the players that we need, and if we need to sell someone now, okay, we will do so.

"If we can do it (the Barry deal) before the end of the transfer window, we will continue to try. We will always continue to improve our squad."

The news could see Jermaine Pennant, Andrei Voronin or Steve Finnan head for pastures new, while Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso's future remains uncertain.

Goes with the post I made earlier about Keane saying "players" and now Rafa, so looks like we're hoping to sign more than Barry.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Sorry meant RB, I thought about the diamond but then thought you wouldnt play that? suprised if you lot play like that, unless your pitch is small it can make you very narrow.

It probably would, but would explain why we bought two supposedly attacking full backs. And with Gerrard and Barry on either side, they can both go out wide, and whip a cross in.

Yeh, RB is problem. If Arby goes, I hope Rafa does buy a proven right back. Hopefully, someone like Glen Johnson.

Looks like we're missing out on Bentley. I wonder if we did make an official bid though :((

Re: Liverpool Thread

Nice interview with Ballague

Liverpoolfc.tv: Rafa Benitez says Pepe Reina is the best keeper in Spain – is he right?

Pepe Reina: That's what Rafa said when he first arrived. Rafa firmly believes Pepe is the best goalkeeper in Spain. He wasn't an automatic choice for the international team when he arrived at Anfield and nobody knew that much about him but Rafa said he was the best because he believed it. Now I think it's pretty clear what Pepe Reina offers, and I firmly believe he and Iker Casillas are at the same level. They are the best two goalkeepers in Spain, no doubt about it.

It did make me laugh when some people on this forum were going on saying Reina is rubbish and overrated. Probably the same people who thought we wouldn't get Torres, or Keane ...

Re: Liverpool Thread

reina is definitely a very good keeper, but comparing him to casillas is a bit too much. iker is almost at the same level of buffon :))

Re: Liverpool Thread

HUNGARIAN hotshot Krisztian Nemeth is in line to make his eagerly awaited Liverpool debut in tonight's friendly against Villarreal.

Rafa Benitez called the 19-year-old striker into the travelling party for the trip to Spain after being impressed by Nemeth's progress in the reserves and his performances at the recent European Under-19 Championships.

With new £20m signing Robbie Keane and recent recruit David Ngog also likely to make their first appearance for the club all eyes will be on Villarreal's El Madrigal stadium as Liverpool take part in a friendly match which was organised as part of the deal which brought Pepe Reina to Anfield three years ago.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Not sure how wise it is to let Finnan go with Degen injured.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I think they'll bring in one RB from the reserves to add cover. And there's an option for Carra to play there more often to accommodate Skrtel and Agger at CB. But who'll be the starting RB, if this is true and Arby's departure is true?

I agree too. Casillas is on a different level. He single handedly won Real Madrid two La Liga titles. But he still needs tips from Pepe to save penalties :-pp

Pepe is still top class though. He'd be No. 1 at most clubs. And he obviously plays a huge role in keeping the morale of the whole squad which is just as important. I'd like to see Reina be captain next season, if Stevie G or Carra arn't playing.

Reasonable team being assembled for the usual champions league run you hope to get on, but again i feel that Rafa will keep tinkering and blow away any consistancy that "might" com the pools way in the league

Re: Liverpool Thread

Sky Sports now reporting that we have met Villa's valuation this afternoon of £17m and Finnan but Villa have pulled the plug as the bid came too late.

Hahahahahahaha

Re: Liverpool Thread

At fucking last.

Don't want him, he's not worth that sort of money and losing the experience of Finnan.

Now lets bring in a quality wide player!

Re: Liverpool Thread

You lot dont need Barry and that is a fact...The lot you have in the middle of the park speaks enough for the team, without adding Stevie G in it.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I think most Liverpool fans will be happy at Villa pulling it, I wonder how Barry feels though.

I agree though, hopefully we'll spend the money on a winger. Ideally someone who can play both wings if we're getting rid of Pennant (which seems very likely).

I could see us making a move for Arshavin now in fact.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Why would you need a winger? I thought you said your going to play the diamond?

Re: Liverpool Thread

about the Barry saga ya gotta give it to(15 minute too late) Randy Lerner he`s 1 tough cookie w/ a massive heart Acorns says it all really. Not too shabby from a bloke who went to school in Cambridge and that went to Villa and sometimes Arsenal games. IMO Alonso is a better player w/ an eye for goals in the middle of the pitch.

Re: Liverpool Thread

LIVERPOOL will try to revive the Gareth Barry transfer saga after Aston Villa tried to finally kill it dead last night.

The Anfield club were finally close to agreeing a deal for the player – with American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett prepared to sanction a cash-only £18million transfer.

But Villa released a statement saying they had ended negotiations when their deadline of 5pm passed before the terms had been finalised.

However, as the predicted sales Liverpool have seemingly needed to make to finance the transfer have not materialised, that will only re-affirm manager Rafael Benitez’s determination to land his top summer target.

He is now armed with the money to persuade Villa to relent in their stubborn refusal to allow their captain to leave and pursue his ambition of playing Champions League football.

The latest stumbling block is not thought to be about the valuation of the player, rather the way the deal is structured.

And Barry will be more desperate then ever to seal his switch to Anfield after his already agonising wait was so close to a conclusion yesterday.

Re: Liverpool Thread

lol barry who?

we all saying we dont want him, even our blokes in spain said we didnt want him, now we do, we do, he to expensive any way , and a joke to pay 19 m for an ageing kean who looked lost last night dont you think, they say the coffers are now dry unless we sell again, who will we sell though thats the problem.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Looked lost? I thought Keane played well and looked sharp, especially considering it was his first game and had been with the squad for a day or two.

I wouldn't say ageing either, 28 is the perfect age for a striker, that's the age when they reach their peak.
