Academy director Frank McParland confident future is bright for Liverpool FC

TWO years ago this month Frank McParland was handed the sizeable challenge of coming up with a plan to kick-start Liverpool’s production line.

The dearth of talent emerging from the state of the art Academy in Kirkby was a major concern and sweeping changes were required.

The Reds’ former chief scout delivered his report to then manager Rafa Benitez, who was so impressed he asked McParland to take on the role of Academy director.

Since then McParland, along with technical director Pep Segura and coach Rodolfo Borrell, has overseen a remarkable transformation of the club’s youth base.

Now rather than fans bemoaning the fact that over a decade has passed since home grown stars like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher burst on to the scene, there is genuine excitement about what’s happening at Kirkby.

Teenage right-back John Flanagan made an accomplished first team debut against Manchester City on Monday night, while left-back Jack Robinson – the youngest player in the club’s history – was sat on the bench. Fellow FA Youth Cup starlets Conor Coady and Raheem Sterling have also been involved with the senior squad.

The blueprint McParland put in place is bearing fruit.

“I’ve been back pretty much two years on the dot,” he said.

“I came back to do a study in April 2009 when Rafa asked me to take a look at the Academy and make some recommendations.

“I stayed to carry the project on and it’s still a work in progress. It was initially Rafa’s project and over the past year we have taken it on again.

“The coaching philosophy has completely changed. Pep and Rodolfo have worked really hard to bring the Spanish and Barcelona philosophy in. Both were involved in producing a lot of the current Barcelona team.

“As technical director Pep teaches the coaches the way he wants the kids to work. It has worked very well. The style of play now is 4-2-3-1 and we keep the ball. We play the same way right throughout the club.

“We are building the philosophy from the Academy up until it hits the reserves. The under-16s and under-18s are both doing very well.”

McParland believes the club owes a huge debt of gratitude to Kenny Dalglish for the role he has played in the Academy’s revival.

The Scot worked with the youngsters at Kirkby for 18 months in his role as an ambassador prior to being appointed manager in January.

Dalglish has proved he’s willing to put his faith in youth and that is inspiring the next generation.

“Kenny has had a massive influence,” he said. “He is very supportive and very knowledgeable about the youngsters. He knows every player involved in the reserves, under-18s and under-16s by name and a lot of the younger ones as well.

“The boss still comes down at least once a week. If the first team have a day off he comes down to watch training and wants to join in. With everything he has achieved in the game it’s amazing for the lads.”

The days when Liverpool were hampered by mistrust and friction between Melwood and Kirkby are thankfully long gone.

McParland, who is also now responsible for overseeing the reserves, knows he has the full backing of Dalglish and director of football Damien Comolli.

He added: “There was a division there before, it has to be said. That’s why Rafa asked me to come back as he was very keen to get the added resource of the Academy helping the first team.

“It’s great knowing I’ve got the support of the manager who I’ve worked with for the past two years. I’ve also got the support of the board more than ever because Damien has come in and is very committed to the youth.

“He is very keen on getting players at the right age and making them Liverpool players.

“Damien hasn’t just come and supported us, he has given us ideas as well. He has said ‘maybe you could do this or that’ and his input has been great.

“Damien, the boss and I talk all the time. Between us there is a lot of experience and it’s a really good mix. I oversee the reserves and the Academy and we have a really good link with the first team.

“That ensures the messages are the same all the way through. With the fitness and medical staff starting to tie in, we are making it one club. There is a real co-operation between both sites.”

Liverpool now boast 31 youth internationals. It’s a source of great pride but McParland’s goal is to produce players capable of nailing down a first team spot at Anfield.

“From under-21s down, we have 17 England internationals and when they get picked for their country it just reinforces the job that you are doing,” he added.

“Four of them – Raheem Sterling, Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and Matty Regan – recently helped England qualify for the European Championships by beating Spain.

“I had a call from Noel Blake who does England Under-19s and he’s talking about taking six or seven of our players. We’re certainly helping England out a lot but what me, the staff, the manager and Damien are desperate for is to get a Liverpool player through.

“We want someone who was born here and has come through our system playing in our first team regularly. That’s our ultimate aim. That will certainly give me more enjoyment than spending millions of pounds on players.

“If we can get a few Scouse lads in the team, that’s what we want. I’m sure that will happen in the next couple of years.

“Sometimes when you work in youth you say you have a five-year plan but we have a plan in the next two years to be feeding players into the first team. That’s our job. If we don’t do that, the club won’t be happy and I won’t be happy either.”

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

Tnx Pipa, good read.

Can't say I'm hugely bothered about tommorow. Ofcourse I want them to win, however a loss has a potential silver lining aswell so it's not all bad. Seeing as City have won the Fa Cup, well hopefully Bolton. I wonder how that will effect Utd; Get them pumped up to make that extra effort, or maybe give them some extra doubts? I can't remember them really getting out of 2nd gear all season, if they have extra in the tank to do that also remains a mystery.

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

I want us to win tomorow definetly..just becouse i don´t like this making arsenal win just to make it harder for United...i remember well it was Arsenal fault they didn´t make anything about the fact, they had the same amount of points as United few weeks ago...they might loose after match against us and then we will look like idiots if United win it despite our possible not-win mentality tomorow...i want us to win, don´t care how much..i want us to give the seme performance like against City, with possibly the same lineup.

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

 was after the goals from the 6:0 win against Utd but goals for us today will do as well.

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

I watched some of it - decent goals. But to be fair, we rested our academy side for the match on Wednesday. By the end, United fielded 8 school boys!

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

We also played three 16 year olds I think?

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

Okay, who is that little misplaced-pass machine and what did they do with Suarez? ;)

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

wow...how we managed to keep it 0-0 at half time is amazing, especialy playing with 18 and 17 year old full backs...

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

Our passing has been atrocious, such ann awful display from us so far.

On top of that, the ref has been abysmal. Missed a clear foul on Spearing in the area and giving countless decisions to Arsenal that weren't given to us for the same thing. It seems to me if you punch the floor then you'll get the other player booked, good tactics by Arsenal. Also not sure why Koscielny wasn't booked for a tackle the same as, if not worse, than Skrtels or Flanagans.

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

Skrtel touched the ball before Eboue was on ground, that was not a foul...Koscielny on other side should be booked for Suarez foul...

our teenage full backs are doing quite good so far...but they have though oposition...

my god, Nasri vs Flanagan, Wallcott vs Robinson. That says something...

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

Sigh.

On a side note, Arsenal have had 16 penalties this season! F*ck me that's one every other match!!!

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

That is absolutely the most insane 97 - 102 minutes of a match I've ever seen. Just. Wow.

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

Wow. What an insane end! Definite penalty from Spearing as well as a stupid push by Eboue.

Loved Kenny telling Wenger to piss off at the end

Probably a fair result with Arsenal maybe shading it for the amount of possession but we had a good amount of shots too.

Decent game.

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

You lot are such a different beast under Daglish. Crazy what a difference he's made.

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

we play with heart, that´s what makes me happy, even if we would not have draw today..

Arsenal look all but title winning side sorry guys...

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

Great result, especially when you consider the youth players in the team. Was really nice to see Dalglish have a laugh with Robinson before he came on to relax him a bit. Thought they did really well, got a bit sloppy towards the end, which is expected. But other then that were really solid.

You have to say Arsenal just aren't good enough to be champions if they can't beat that Liverpool team. In the last 20min. Liverpool were looking more likely to score. Decent result, but really happy with the performance.

well, you lots spend 50 mil in the transfer window something Arsenal hasn`t done in 6 yrs total. We don`t look the part I fully agree but you lots spend £££ to reach what?!?!? 7th spot some achievement there buddy!

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

well.. the Torres money was spended but to be honest we spend just 2 milions if we look at this closely...we still don´t know how much can our new owners afford...

we bought Torres for 24 milion pounds if i remember good and for that 50 milion we spended on two new players like if it was swap..

we also have players that we signed for free..

the position we are in is not relevant to come up with, since we chainged owners + coach + many people in board since start of the season..

I think you should direct your bitterness at the club for not spending money when it's been obvious to everyone else that the team needs some investment. Maybe if the club had re-invested from selling players (which Liverpool did) you might have won something! Liverpool have been asset stripped for two seasons now, so your spending argument holds little water, when you look at the trophies and title/CL challenges in that period.

not bitter at all disappointed and rightly so, We`re sitting 2nd w/o spending loads. Their no excuse I agreed w/ his comments about not good enough. Spending money might prove Liverpool did it right, doesn`t guarantee us being better, If Arsenal spend. As it stands the biggest spenders are sitting btw 3rd and 7th .

Re: Liverpool Thread(I Just Can't Get Enough!!)

i didn´t mean you are not good enough team, but that you did not good enough to be title winning side today...you got your chance to overcome United this season even before this game...and there is still 6 games to go...but you didn´t used them, same as we didn´t used our chances to figt for top 4 place...after VERY difficult season...now it all came to this point with Kelly, Carra, Agger, Gerrard, Johnson, Aurelio injured... and yet we managed to fight.. that is outstanding imo. If you take Nasri against Flanagan and Wallcott against Robinson, that sayes something about how our squad was destroyed after Rafa´s sacking by former managment and owners...

I have nothing against Arsenal, i would like you to win the title, but Wenger or your board needs to invest...not make stars only, but to buy players who can lift the team immediately, like we did with Suarez...we bough him and he has immediate impact..you for example create a player who reaches his peak in same age as Suarez and then you sell him...wich might happend with Nasri, Fabregas etc, if good offer comes.. this way you always play fancy football but when it comes to winning things, you lack true leader, someone like Vieira, Henry, Seaman, Bergkamp, or even before Adams..

United are not far better than Arsenal, or chelsea or City...thay have something other teams don´t have - consistency, luck and leaders (Rooney, Giggs, VdS) and this constantly, with Giggs retirement, they still have very experienced players who could chainge a game..

That is why i said, you are not good enough to win the title, becouse on paper you have amazing talent, but not all have the experience to take pressure on their shoulders.. i guess you need to combine the policy of Wenger mixing with true leading types of players you can afford to pay and to keep at the team..
