Liverpool Thread

Re: Liverpool Thread

Right, so what's the point you're both trying to make?

The title wasn't "realistic" last season, but we could win it, just like he said there in that interview.

"It would be good if the owners made an effort economically, if they pushed. It would be lovely if we could find ourselves in an economic position where we can bring players in and build a squad that can compete with other sides. But it's up to the owners to try to bring players in, not us."

That's the most interesting part of the "interview" and the only real part I imagine hasn't had any kind of media spin put on it. Other than him saying that other teams have standout players, which is true. We were crying out to sign Silva or someone else who could bring a touch of magic and turn a game. Whether that's Aquilani or not, we'll see. But we do lack flair compared to other teams when you think of the players at Chelsea, City and Arsenal for example.

You lads should know more than anyone not to believe everything the media say is an "interview" after having Ronaldo speaking to the press constantly ;)

Re: Liverpool Thread

I think you know what NSH's point was and I was just showing you that it wasn't just The Sun reporting it, they've nicked the quotes from The Guardian so it's probably a genuine interview.

And you spent more than Arsenal, Chelsea and United this summer. Infact only Villa spent more.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I can't be arsed getting into "but you spent X amount wah wah!" shite this early on a weekend

We sold one of the best players in the world and had to replace him. We spent a large amount of money but we didn't spend that on extra players and make the squad stronger, did we? No, we spent it on replacing players who left.

This topic has came up far too many times now and it was boring when we discussed it months ago, it's even more boring now.

Oh, and City spent more as well.

Edit: Now this is interesting, Carragher has came out at the same time and dismissed our title chances as well. Rafa trying to deflect attention away from us? Some kind of bunker mentality being set out by Rafa?

http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/126774/Carragher-fears-he-will-miss-out

VERY surprising to see TWO players say the SAME thing at the SAME time ... hmmm

Maybe the squad is actually fed up and the dressing room isn't a great place at the moment?

Re: Liverpool Thread

Oh yeah sorry, City too.

I agree it's too early on the weekend to be doing this, but it makes me laugh how this excuse keeps coming up. You spent more than the rest of the Big Four, and that's a fact. ;)

You spent huge amounts on signing on fees for current players who renewed their contracts, that cost's a lot of money too.

We had to sell the best player in the world therefore any signings we made were to replace him too.

Arsenal sold Adebayor and Toure, and only brought in Vermaelen.

:)

Re: Liverpool Thread

And the fact is we sold a MASSIVE player in our team and had to replace him, we didn't spend on "improving" the squad, we spent on "replacing".

We spent a lot on contracts, sure. Contracts cost a lot of money these days.

You did sell Ronaldo, sure. And you wanted to replace him but couldn't find anyone after you failed with an attempt for Benzema and probably wanted the likes of Ribery as well. If you could've got those players for what you wanted to pay, you'd have spent more than us in the summer! And then what would your excuse be? "But you didn't have to replace the best player in the world and we did!"

Adebayor and Toure aren't world class players in my book so not really sure on the point here. Arsenal are a whole new ball game anyway, they never spend money so pointless even including them in clubs that spend the most in the summer.

:)

Re: Liverpool Thread

:D

Either something isn't right in the dressing room, or Rafa/the players are trying to deflect the attention away from us. I'm still surprised two players have said such things so early in the season, and in the same weekend.

We'll see.

Re: Liverpool Thread

I've always wondered about the atmosphere in the dressing room at Anfield since Rafa went there and the influx of all the Spanish,Have you any idea if the team all socialize? Must be strange for Carra and Stevie G being in the minority.

Probably the same as other teams with foreign players (Chelsea, City and Arsenal for example).

Re: Liverpool Thread

Well Gerrard is mates with a lot of footballers from the Merseyside area (often with Accrington players etc) and seems to socialise with them mostly, rather than the Liverpool squad although he does seem popular with the other players.

from what i've seen from photos/interviews etc its fine, they mingle.

Re: Liverpool Thread

In my mind players shouldnt really say things to the press like that. I'd rather something more neutral, like one game at a time, need the fans backing blah blah...

Its happened before where the players have been bullish and they havent then gone out to do their talking on the pitch.

This is quite negative and it will get the fans nervy, and other clubs/players will see it as a weakness.

i did like the dig at the owners however.

A bunker mentality could work well.

Re: Liverpool Thread

 Bloody 'ell I predicted March but were still in September!

I think its a extremely silly thing to come out with and does nothing but harm your chances even further.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Wow, that's a change.

I suppose they've finally learned that being pessimistic won't make you look as stupid come the end of the season.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Benayoun in the centre = GOALS

Nando having another shocker again, but hes getting walloped all over the pitch by Bikey and the likes, and yet he was penalised for a clearn tackle on a Bunrley defender.

Think we need to switch to two up top, Nando will finish chances he gets but his hold up play has been terrible this season, on the other hand the ball has been sticking to Kuyt!

Re: Liverpool Thread

Defenders are smashing Torres out of the way as soon as he tries to hold up the ball, refs aren't interested.

The only way we're going to see Torres get back to what we know he can be is if someone is close to him to take the attention away from him. Because right now he's completely wasted as a sole attacker.

Re: Liverpool Thread

getting sick and tired of these oil tanker defenders in the prem getting away with hauling down players with their hands. Elbows leading everywhere. We will have serious injuries this season if it continues.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Only managed to watch the first half properly but saw the goals, pretty impressive performance. Loads of energy, drive and commitment which we lack at times. When we play like that, we're capable of beating anyone. Comfortably.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Haha, yeh. Gerrard can play anywhere. And be world class at it.

Yossi was magic, as he has been since the New Year. Ran the game.

Gerrard's assist was fucking ridiculous. Credit to Lucas, did the dirty work, and tied things together well.

Re: Liverpool Thread

yeah yossi was the man today.....ref's aint to bothered by Torres getting the shit kicked outta him because we dont have manager that winges about his players being percecuted everyweek (although he is prone to a "rant").

Great that Skrtels back, Agger will be fit soon because he adds a dimension going forward when teams just sit back against us.

I think Reina's comments are justified but I think hes trying to spur the players on because lads like Babel & Riera n0eed to step it up a gear and prove their worth for the £22 Million (approx we spend on them combined.

But all in all good performance......and just because I heard him talking aload of shite today on Soccer Saturday... fuck tony cottee!

Re: Liverpool Thread

yup Degen wasnt a bad player before he joined!

Good news lads:

Standard Chartered are going to be our new sponsors. 80m over 4 years, 20m a year, joint highest sponsorship deal with the Mancs. Amazing that we only had a 7m a year sponsorship, even the Bitters got more from Chang!!!!!

First step towards equalling the playing field with United/Chelsea etc. Now...lets get the second step....the stadium.

Re: Liverpool Thread

Yeh, we never will.

Just a shame all this happened now. If Moores and Parry had a bit of nous to use the brand name, we never would have to sell the club in the first place.

CL already this week? I almost forgot :P

Re: Liverpool Thread

7th August
Rumours abound that Standard Chartered Bank are going to replace Carlsberg as Liverpool's main sponsor, they rivalled AON in bidding for the sponsorship of Man Utd and so they will be able to meet or better the £15m a year Liverpool are asking for which Carlsberg seemingly can't afford to offer.

I'm a bit sad about it tbh, i've pretty much grown up with Carlsberg on the Liverpool shirt, ok my first couple of kits had Candy on the front but most of my life as an active Liverpool fan has included shirts with Carlsberg on the front. I've grown very fond of their logo on the front and i don't like the logo that Standard Chartered uses, even in white i don't think it'd look as good.

actually...in the process of typing this i thought i'd see what it'd look like and just had a quick go at mocking it up in photoshop, doesn't look too bad in the end, might be ok...

Well, well! Looks like that's our new shirt then! £80m deal over four years, joint highest shirt sponsorship deal along with United :SMUG:
