Liverpool’s hopes of keeping midfielder Xabi Alonso, meanwhile, increased when Jorge Valdano admitted Real Madrid were some distance away from Benitez’s valuation of the player.

While Valdano admits Alonso remains one of their targets, the Madrid director general wants the price to be right.

“Xabi Alonso is a priority if he fits into our budget, and this doesn’t seem the case. We are very far from the figures that Liverpool have set out,” Valdano said.

“Liverpool have taken up a difficult stance over Xabi Alonso. I don’t like to talk about the private details of negotiations.

“We are now studying many alternatives.”

Funny how when footballers do something so casual like a kick about they're made of glass.. where as when normal people play they rarely get such injuries...

Benitez confirmed earlier that the press reports about Aurelio are miles off, he'll be out for a month he reckons and only 2 months at the very most.

Looks like Insua will be starting the campaign from the start. Can't wait to see how he progresses, personally I think he's gonna be special that boy.

I think he's definitely got the potential to be a top player, but he's still a bit raw at the minute and in one or two games last season (West Brom in particular) he looked really nervous and panicked a lot. I suppose that's to be expected from him at this stage, but something that needs to be addressed.

well theres panicking against West Brom and not putting a foot wrong against Arsenal and getting MOTM (away). It happens, and its an age thing, I'd give him a long run of games to boost his confidence.

If you sell Alonso or Masch and replace them with Ribery that would be stupid . Ribery has already said its Real or nothing so I doubt it.

He's denied making that comment now or said it was misquoted so maybe there is truth in it.

Three clubs have made bids for Torres and all turned down, in excess of £60m as well :D

Well in Rafa for telling them to get stuffed, well in Fernando for showing commitment and even G&H get credit for not taking the money and cashing in :D

kind of disturbing seeing as nobody heard about this until rafa revealed it, whereas there's constant speculation surrounding alonso and masch...

I doubt it. Maybe we did but it's unlikely SAF thought Rafa would sell Lucas to him let alone your best player.

It still wouldn't stop Ferguson from trying to unsettle Torres and see how much he really did want to stay at us though. I'm confident that United were one of the clubs to make an offer even though they knew they wouldn't have much chance anyway.

Why are you so confident though? The reports just seemed like paper talk and the usual bullshit we get during the summer.

Like I said, we may well have done but I just don't think it's that likely.
