Football Manager 2008

Anyone else here beta testing FM Live?

Haha, I've gone bonkers in my second season. I read in all the papers that we were going to struggle in the Championship, and we had no transfer money available, so I went after all the free transfers I could find. This is the new Tranmere Rovers line-up (spoilered for those who don't like to read player names - don't know why you wouldn't here as they're all carthorses but it's frowned upon on the SI board):

GK: Sébastien Hamel
DL: Yannick Zambernardi
DC: Stephane Henchoz*
DC: Ibrahim Tall
DR: Frank Sinclair*
ML: Johan Micoud
MC: Patrik Berger*
MC: Nicky Butt
MR: Wade Elliott
FC: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
FC: John Cunliffe

AND FINALLY: Andy Cole*
The asterisked players only have a two-star current ability. Uh-oh. :D

I'm enjoying it, its easy to get to grips with, very similar to FM.

I'm on a losing streak right now though.

I have more of a love\hate relationship with this game than any other I've ever known.

When a season starts it's great, getting new staff in, getting a shortlist together, setting up the training. Love it. But then the season starts and you start losing games for no reason that you can spot (your passing ratio is good, your strikers can't score despite having great finishing/dribbling/heading/jumping/strength/pace...

I stopped playing it for months, started again in February and really got into it, now I'm completely off it again.

The only way I play this game is with my mate online hes MK Dons and Im Doncaster, awesome season

One thing that would make me buy FM09, would be if we were all in for an Evo Web Managers Game, so just like a big multiplayer game with whoever from here wants to be in it? :))

I would have done that with any Football Manager to date Tim but I don't think there's enough interest. And it's a pain in the arse when someone quits.

I dont think it would work either, but it would be great.

I'm getting bored so quickly on this lately, I've started about 5 new seasons in the past few weeks. Premiership, Championship, Russian league, Italy. I've only actually finished one full season on one of them before starting a new one.

I need inspiring.

The secret to sucess in this is to really breed your youth players. I am Hearts and have very good youth players and played them in the cup comps and have now decided to play them in the league games as they are full of confidence after hammering Motherwell 6-0 in the league cup final.

Kostadinov, Copil, Rapnik, all come become very good players. I also signed more youngsters called Biker Bjarnesson and a Brazilian called Danilinho.

lets just say the fans are excited!!

I bought a few highly-rated youth players (with okay current ability but massive potential, according to my highly-rated scouts), and the fans go ballistic after a couple of months. "X has shown very little quality in his few appearances for the first team" - and the board say the same in your appraisal each month.

I keep getting crash dumped error when trying to start a new game now, its after i installed the 8.2 patch? anyhelp

You're absolutely right. Some strange things happen in my game. In the first season I won the Euro 2008 with England. Then I moved to Tottenham Hotspur. I won the FA Cup but in the Premier the team was too bad finished 10th. Next season I went to Manchester United and won the Premier League and the Carling Cup. Now, in the 4th season, I continue with Man Utd and I'm at the 8th place!!! The same team in 2 years going from 1st to 8th!!!
My team in spoiler.

GK: Edwin Van der Sar
DL: Patrice Evra
DC: Rio Ferdinand
DC: Nemanja Vidic
DR: Daniel Alves
ML: Cristiano Ronaldo

MC: Rafael Van der Vaart

FC: Wayne Rooney
FC: Sergio Agüero

I prefer believing that the opposites start to get your team's way of playing, so you can't surprise them as before...

And, well, it's football, so it's unpredictable... :D

I had a great first season with Newell's Old Boys at Argentina, finishing second in Apertura and Champion of Clausura (The objective was mid-table). Now I got more money for transfers, but the team is not doing as well as las season :P

The focus now is next year's Copa Libertadores!

A Evo Web league of this would be good- its the only game I can play anytime because its on my computer :DD

But I have a Mac - will I be able to play with Pc people?

I have never played Football manager online.

A mac?! what where you thinking :DD

I was half tempted to buy this for my laptop.... until I came in here!

Is it really that bad? Any other suggestions? Is there a patch for FM07 that would have January's transfers all accounted for?

I would say it's "all that bad", I still play one match per night (so that the seasons last longer, I've done it since before I can remember). But only because I want to see the players I've brought from YTS to first-team do well for themselves, not because I love the game. It's so frustrating to get a winning tactic for a month and then get beat 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 the month after that for no noticeable reason.

It's one of those games, reminds me of the later PES's. So crap in so many areas but it's such an involving world and such a part of your gaming history that you can't just throw it away. Not until it gets really, unrecognisably bad.

There's some data updates here for FM 07:

Not tried them myself, but some have been made recently so should include most of the transfers.

The FM WeeGiE update for FM 08 is being released on Friday at 6pm, I might start a new game on it with the update.
www.fmweegie.co.uk

Personally I think FM 07 was a bit better than 08 in a few ways but 08's few additions have made it the better game.
09 needs to be very different though... I won't buy the same recycled bullshit again, FM 08 is almost the same as CM4.
It needs either a 3D match engine or semi-3D (like CM) so you can at least see the height of the ball.

FM Weegie's updates are pretty good :)

I'm happy with FM 08. Since I moved in with my mate a week Sunday, we've hammered FM due to not having a TV aerial/Sky/Virgin yet and hardly any 360 games. I'm just into my second season as Atletico Madrid, finished 4th after pipping Espanyol in the last game of the season :D

My mate got sacked 3/4 through his first season for making Leverkusen the laughing stock of Germany, and is now the Shrewsbury boss (talk about a drop in quality) and he's enjoying himself. Although he is struggling with the money difference. No more players worth £10m, now worth 10k

Funnily enough he also got sacked in his first SWOS season as Hull manager, he's now managing an Albanian club team

Im sick and tired of having an offside goal debate every two matches, its really ruining any kind of fluency to my game.
