FIFA 12 Discussion Thread

But in gameplay terms I think this generally gets a bad rep from people.

I could be wrong but I think that people dont give it enough time or comment on it without actually playing it. Alot of the opinions of the game I read in the PES forum match what I thought of the game after only a few hours play or what I thought of FIFA in the PS2 days. I have put in about 20 - 30 hours now and its just starting to click. The problem was that PES is soo ingrained in me and you cant play the game like PES, its not at all rewarding that way and it takes a LONG time to break the old mindset. Now that I am playing the game for what it is I am confident in calling it the best football game this generation, by a long way too.

I straight away started a career mode in League 2 with Bristol Rovers and I found it a bit of a chore to play. I would turn it on, play a few games and turn it off feeling bored and very underwhelmed. After a couple of weeks of this I had a better understanding of the game and was enjoying it a bit more but I still wouldnt say I was happy playing it. Then I bought a few players in the January window and they, along with a better feel for the game made a big difference. After playing with tactics and formations I now had my team setup how I liked and there was a decent amount of movement, which was something I felt was lacking from the game. With the new guys I ended a horrible run of about 10 - 15 games without a win and started to play some nice football, we went to the end of the season with just 1 loss. It wasnt enough to keep me employed though, I finished 3rd from bottom but only about 10 points from mid table, it wasnt good enough for the board and they let me go. I was actually gutted I lost my job to, I made the team my own and we were starting to get into a groove. I did not want to carry on with another team, I considered loading an old save and trying to turn my season round earlier and also thought about not playing the game anymore, in the end I decided to march on. I had some good offers from other clubs, I could of gone to Korea or Australia and had a large transfer budget but they expected to win the league. I decided to stay where I had failed and took the least attractive job with Wimbledon in League 2. I let a load of the guys go to supplement my meagre £250,000 transfer budget and shifted it all into wages, then I went and got a new 3 man midfield and 3 players for the front 3 made up of free agents and loans. I am 10 games into the new season and I am totally in love with this game. Everything is starting to click now, the way I can move the players on and off the ball, the passing, the shooting, the defending, I am starting to get that old PES feeling when I score goals and put good moves together. Its a brilliant game and more I play it the better it gets. There are only 3 things that bother me at the moment which are CPU tackling being 100% accurate, first touch with L2 being far too good with crappy players and player switching not always doing what it should. But given how good the rest of the game it when these things happen I forget about them straight away.
My next game is against Chelsea in the Carling Cup, I am excited to see how different its going to be against top class opposition. In PES2011 I would take my team of ML defaults into cup games against Arsenal ect... and it would be exactly the same as playing a team from the lower division. I hope that FIFA doesnt play the same way, I dont expect it to.

Got a bit carried away with this post but to summise, once I freed my football gaming brain from its PES shackles I found FIFA to be the most realistic, entertaining and exciting football game I have played since PES5.

that's the best comment about playing fifa as a former pes fan :)

Really liked fifa12, but got the usual samey feeling after a while. Switched to pes12 and instantly found it fun. Now that is bugging me (can't find a comfy pass assistance level and lots f little things bugging me) so I'm swinging back to FIFA.

Stuck it on my love film list, so hopefully will get it soon, but has anything changed much recently? My biggest bug bear I think was the lack of CPU shooting. Was annoying when they just dribble it around inside the box?

I noticed that increasing cpu shot error makes them want to carry the ball into the net rather than shooting from long range
now i'm playing with 55 shot error for cpu and i'll test it more

I don't see why not, I'm using them on World Class and I like it

this patch is harder? I had some odd games.

I lost to liverpool 7-0 at home and got 3 gusy snet off. SO i reset it then load up and then I won 2-0 simialr shots and possesion both teams.

I then draw 0-0 away to wigan or something?

I then lose 5-0 away to man utd so reboot and lose only 1-0. And simialr stats both teams.

I then play WBA away and lose 3-1.

this is on professional.

There is definitely a learning curve to the game, and the neat thing about it, every team has their own quirks as to how to use them to play well. I never saw the stats for team chemistry anywhere for the career mode, but obviously changing your players up creates a gap in quality of good and bad play if you don't have a good formation, strategy, and players placed in the "right" position. It's evident or we wouldn't feel weird or ineffective playing as certain teams. Tactical defending is a headache, but it is definitely a true challenge to keep your defender in front of you 24/7.

All good things of course.

Another observation is the varied flavors of games. I am only playing on professional and I am having games where I am dominated in possession and shots, score late winners, have late winners scored against me, varied shots from the CPU, random fans streaking across the field, the works.

My gripes are the same as some, yet minor, player switching has been a pain at times causing my player to suddenly stop from continuing a run onto a well placed ball or not staying with the CPU attacker, players not aggressively crashing towards the goal for a loose ball after a deflected shot, me continuously losing to Dortmund or Bayern every season, lol.

I really do think every PES/WE fan should give this a try, just like some of us gave WE6 a try (and some time) from playing Fifa for so long. It's a great experience and awesome to see the strides EA has made with this franchise. The last football game I invested in was WE9, I was a bit jaded and never got into any other games. After a couple years, I just game up (hence my long hiatus from the evo forums).

It's nice to enjoy football gaming again.

I have no problems at all with the player switching.

You're lucky then, I have had a few chances simply squandered after I lobbed some great through balls into space to allow my attacker to get a 1v1 situation, but for whatever reason, the running player simply stops for a moment losing all momentum and any advantage to be the first to the ball for the opportunity. Usually there is another player the CPU switches to for some reason even though the ball is obviously not intended for them since they have no chance of winning the ball, then switching to the right player causes the issue. It also has occurred on basic through balls into an open space, the CPU thinks I want to switch to a player farther away, it makes no sense. Like I said, it's minor, just a bit annoying seeing as some of those games, I end up losing by 1 or staying tied up.

Are you playing with assisted passing on? I feel like the more manual you go, the more errors like that can occur since the CPU has to sense which player has the best play on the ball even though you are trying to switch the players yourself.

After playing Skyrim and Batman Arkham Asylum on the PC for the last few weeks, and not playing FIFA since early November, I decided to have a quick game of FIFA last night.

The graphics seemed pretty awful, almost like an XBox 1 in comparison! Models seemed to lack hardly any detail, despite having details to maximum etc, and it just seemed unbelievably plain. Pretty surprising because I remember being quite impressed by the graphics until I took a break from it.

Moral of the story? Don't play Skyrim or Batman and then play FIFA straight after it!

Actually, are there any mods for the PC version to improve textures or anything? PES has tons of mods to improve the level of detail, does anything exist for FIFA?

Playing all manual. If you use the default switch button the computer gives you the man closest to the ball. If you use the right stick you can pretty much get the right man.

I have my slider settings for attacking runs set to 60 for both side and that seems enough to get players forwards without being over committed, but in my game's they do shoot from all over. I think maybe the marking settings may have an influence, mine are at 56 I think so there's still that tiny bit of space for the CPU to be invited to shoot. It depends on your opponents though. In recent CM games, Wolves didnt shoot all that much unless from inside the box but Liverpool and Man City would shoot from all over. Gerrard hit the bar from about 30 yards, and also against Chelsea in my first season I recall 80 minutes of defending being undone by an Essien screamer from 30 yards or more. The top teams try lots of long shots and are pretty deadly at them too.

I'm thinking it's Trait related. Whenever I play Sunderland, Craig Gardner is always shooting from range. Rooney scored a 25-yarder against me, and Gerrard attempted a few. I think the 'Long Shot Taker' trait makes them shoot a lot, but players without that trait (i.e. most of them) are far too reticent to have a go, from what I've seen.

I don't think the Marking slider affects it. I've tried high Marking and low Marking and didn't pick up any difference in shooting.

i tested by uping the long shot to around 85-90 in player editor for a couple of teams .all top strikers and midfield players . a it works all those players were blasting in long shots.

would take along while to do all players for all teams though but seems to make a great differance

Obviously I had my injuries set too high and now I'm forced to forfeit my next game (which happens to be an FA Cup game) because of a lack of players. And not enough time between games to sign players either. Great. CM pretty much ruined there.

Edit: Had to load up an earlier save, sell two players then put all of that money into my wage budget and sign four very average players just to get the squad up.

Oh, so it's Attribute related? Very interesting.

But it would take too long, like you say. Has anyone tried the Custom Tactics route, maybe whacking the Chance Creation Shooting up high? Does that make CPU teams shoot more?

That explains why the top teams regularly hit long range shots then. I like that it's stat related, Gerrard is far more likely to try and succeed from range than say Gareth Barry. Nice.

Tevez scored two long range shots yesterday against me the game finished 3-3, his first was a belter on the half volley in the top corner.

I don't really notice that teams don't try long shots that often, it seems right to me.

I've had Bradley Johnson score from range against me and most of the top players (Rooney, Ibrahimovic, Van Persie) seem to be accurate and frequent with their long range efforts. I'd say it comes down to attributes and traits.

I wish it was all stat related and for example when speedsterg get the ball with cpu the try to beat you with speed and are hard to catch.

Dribblers try dribble moves and are always run with ball etc...

Maye CPu does do this?

The only problem that I have with FIFA 12 now is the lack of fouls the AI commits and its bugging me more and more and more. I had a game of Liverpool V Everton and there was 2-1 fouls and 1 of them was for handball.. The may the defense backs off and gives you room to shoot grates me more than the pressure fest from last year. I've tried all different patches, ini files, sliders and no one can fix it. I've posted on the EA forums and to various EA members on twitter and they ignore it like it doesn't exist.

I am now eating my words as PES with various gameplay patches, kits, option files and camera mod plays surprisingly well although its early days yet

What is your CPU marking set at? Fullback slider? Length Height and Width?

Ive tried all sorts of sliders from day 1..i think now its at 100 man marking 65 full backs 45 width and height..ive tried altering my acceleration slightly to entice them to foul..Im now trying the latest gameplay patch from soccergaming...its not the postioning that is the problem its the mentality to back off and let you run past them..an example of this is I was playing as man u, pro level and ran down the wing past 3 defenders with Anderson and not one of them attempted a tackle..I cant play on WC ledgendary mode the speed of the AI turns just piss me off :)

increasing the man marking means it will be 1 on 1 fight and iregular positioning of the opposing team ,so increasing the marking to 100 is totally wrong

Try these new sliders/settings of me then, I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

When I am playing somebody 1vs1 who is in the same room as I am, do the sliders revert back to default? or do the sliders stay the same? so the person I am playing against has the computers sliders?
