Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Sorry, guys for it being a little later than promised but I just got off the phone with Michael and scribbling down notes as fast as he could talk. But it's worth the wait. First, they switched Next-Gen to today. He was able to talk to David Rutter for 15 minutes and was able to cover a lot of our questions. So here's some good info that we haven't seen elsewhere.

Red Cards are fixed. They totally re-wrote the AI for the refs and now tackles from behind can result in direct reds. This is all being driven by the new trapping system. Michael was told that you will definitely see more cards in general. Next, let's talk cameras. All cameras are available in all modes and are adjustable. Stadiums look better than ever and now have away fans and also there were supporters with scarves. But I must bring up the 15 new stadiums. They are all generic. They have a style similar to regional stadia, but aren't real. There is a knockoff of White Hart Lane. There are generic Italian, Mexican, African and Spanish. Can't remember the rest. Sorry.....

Next some more gameplay stuff.Ball physics are vastly improved and skill moves are responsive and easy to pull off. The new team tactics have given the teams a very realistic feel and they play in a realistic style to their counterparts. Michael played as Arsenal v Tottenham and said that the Spurs were real aggresive. He then played a Serie A match and it was very laid back in the Italian style. He asked how often the teams change tactics and was told continually in response to your style and game situation. Now, in case you haven't read it yet, there are three gameplay speeds. Normal which is Euro, slow which is 08 and fast which is slightly faster than Euro. Michael also brought up how the free kicks have been changed where you can do two-man kicks with layoffs. Now you can also charge from the wall this year. But there are no quick-kicks. David Rutter said they wanted to do it but couldn't this year. So the game will still halt and reset postions.

Okay, big stuff here. The whole backline D AI was re-written. Last year only one man at a time could approach in the box. Now up to five can. So no more cutbacks and running across the box for chippies. But it will vary based on tactics. He said he talked to a guy from EA for 20 minutes just about this alone. Now switching has been improved so we shouldn't have that helpless feeling where the CPU won't let you have control of a guy who can break up a play. Dummy passes are in. Michael defined that and was told yes, it's in. The fatigue system has been totally redone. You'll see a major difference near half. You'll get some energy back at halftime, but not all. And late in the match it'll show. Goalies can't get hurt. But they can come up late in matches in support based on their attributes. You don't control it.

Now before this sounds too good to be true, he's the bad stuff. Manager Mode got next to no love. This year was all about gameplay. They said they know things need work and it's on the agenda for 10. And one of the big problems they haven't been able to figure out is how to manage fatigue over the season. So the CPU is probably gonna be exausted by match 5 again. But here's a good note. There is now a premium in how you substitute, The game will let injuries occur if you subs all three guys out. So you really have to have some strategy for subbing. Now here's a good counter balance: injured players will now go off the pitch and be able to re-enter the match. Michael said you see them oon the sidelines laying around in pain, and then when ready the ref waves them back on. Cool little touch.

Sliders make a very visible effect on matches. They actually had these in mind way back last November but had to wait for this title to get them in. Michael gonna list all the sliders for Team Tactics later. Bu they are in some of the interviews out there. He likes them and say they work well. Now he hasnt' gotten to "Be a Pro" stuff yet. There are going to be playing all night so there will be some more questions asked and more things explored. But I've gotta drop a few loose nuggets I still have on my notes. Headers are totally ripped out and redone. They went back and looked at older games and captured all new animations to bring the feel of those games back. Back to cards: there are delayed cards. You can play the advantage and go score and then the ref will show the card.

Now this was a 6 week-old build. There have been many improvements since. But they couldn't show the newest build because it had the super-secret online stuff. If my stuff sounds all over the place and not very concise, it's because Michael was so excited about the game it was just one "man this game is great" moment after another. I just wanted you guys to have info as quick as possible, as he'll be playing the game tuntil late in the night their time. He'll fill in anty blanks I left and answer more direct questions probaly weither late tonight or tomorrow. But all in all, the game sounds really, really good form Michael. That's it for now. Here's another nugget. There are no unlockables, everything is already unlocked. Balls, kits and all. Michael just called me as I was typing my last post. He's still playing and getting info. He'll be on later tonight.

Yes we are. Thank you.

About the read. I read just on main Fifa site. ABSOLUTELY GUTTED about MM! Next year there will be no excuse to not get it perfect. They better revolutionize the whole thing.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Michael also said there are 5 different arenas to choose from for practice. I asked him if the dummy-wall was usable and he was going to find out. But I want to bring up the new stadium thing again. David Rutter went into great detail with Michael about the costs that are incurred with adding new stadia and how time consumming they are to implement. So it sounds like, IMO, we'll get more generics than real going forward. But the gameplay sounds like it's getting a top dollar effort and the game is continuing toward a great simulation of football/soccer. Michael said the graphics and animations are phenominal. Well, that's all Ive got for now. Michael can take it from here. I can't wait for October! Brian the Secretary.......

Michael said the stadiums look even better than last year. Good stuff.

Oh yeah, one final thought. This is coming from a guy who loves Pro Evo. So to hear him gushing really makes me feel confident this game will rock, fanboy that I unashamedly am........

:))

EDIT: And from FSB..

They Came, They Saw, They Fell In Love!
Posted by Carl at 07:34

It was a long day for the FSB Team visiting the EA Canada facilities here in Vancouver. Starting very early at 9am and working through till 9pm. But it was worth every minute! Over the next few days we will be providing the viewers with much insight into the PC and PS3/X360 versions of FIFA 09. Having played the game on both formats we are pleased to tell you that you are in for a treat. Next-Gen football has finally arrived!

The PC version of FIFA 09 has undergone a massive overhaul this season and is looking a real treat with the new mouse and keyboard controls that remind us of a certain football game on the Wii, be it with much much more accurate controls. The focus... a much more innovative control scheme.

The next-gen version of FIFA 09 though stole the show. From the moment you get your hands on it you will realise how much this game has come along. We were pleasantly surprised at the progress the team here in Vancouver have made over the course of the year. The focus was "250 Key Changes", and its clear they did deliver!

Over the next few days we will be posting impressions as well as images and exclusive interviews. Be sure to check back for a full in-depth look at PS3/X360 and PC versions of FIFA 09.

Signing Out,

FSB Team (Vancouver, Canada)

Screens, videos, cmon!

:-pp

There's always PES2009 and the glorious ML.
not a single player person. i couldnt give a toss if they completely remove manager mode. all i want is manager mode online. im an online player and hate the AI in single player sports games

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Yap AI sucks, only way to play a master league/manager mode is with a friend.

"all about gameplay" sounds great, they clearly ripping off pes ideas on pretty much everything but that's the way....bring it on please.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

yep. playing with people online on a sports game is what its all about, not againts robots. its the soul reason why i have much prefered to play pro evo on the pc then in consoles in the past gen just for online play

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Sounds great about the gameplay and online yes, but I don't hold out too much hope for the online staying great, games often go silly online nowadays. Really wanted the Manager Mode improving as it's what I spend most time on the game doing of late, but I do go through phases. If only EA had just altered 5-10 things I would've been chuffed, it'd be enough before they revamp it all.

I hope when it was said there was no love for MM at all, things like altering CPU clubs so they actually sign players away from my rejects in the first 4 seasons will be in now, as well as more signings in general. But I doubt it.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

I played 08 on PRO level and could win games on the WC level. In this 80% build of 09 I'm getting my a** handed to me on Semi Pro. At times I'm even struggling to get off shots.

Arsenal 5 Milan(me)-1

West Ham 2 Arsenal(me)-0

Spurs 3 Arsenal(me)-0

Just like in EURO, you cannot play 09 the same as you did 08. You'll need to adjust your playing style based on the new tactics system which is very well done.

This is by far my favorite part of the new game. The producers will ship the game with tactics already loaded for each team. They will guess based on their knowledge of the teams. Admittedly they know they won't be right in a lot of cases so they will look to the community for help. You'll be able to download tactics from the EA Locker.

Because of the new tactics, every team plays differently and the CPU does adjust on the fly during the game based on the score and situation. This is probably the main reason I was getting beat. I did not adjust the tactics. Your CPU teammates adjust their positioning and runs based on the tactic settings.

Here are the options for tactics:

OFFENSE

Build up
Speed
Pass
Positioning-Free form or Organized

Chance Creation
Passing
Crossing
Shooting
Postioning-Free form or Organized

DEFENSE

Pressure
Aggression
Team Width
Back Line-Offsides Trap or Cover

It's kind of tough to explain Vince but, because they have improved the controls and response the player seems to move into the animation a lot quicker.

I never used tricks in 08 because I couldn't remember how to do them all. Playing today I just held the LT and moved the RS and the tricks almost seemed automatic and believable.

Ok. A 12 hour day at the studio (plus a few Ketl on the rocks after) and the day is completed.

BP, I asked him (David Rutter) this question word for word in my 15 minute interview. I made it a point to give the example of a team playing a league match on the weekend, a CL game midweek, and another league fixture on Sunday. I also stated that it's feasible to think that a player with low stamina ratings may have to sit out a match. If that's the case why are we seeing the same lineup for the CPU every week?

David made it clear to me that they have yet to figure out the fatigue on a match by match basis. They can do it within a game, but not match by match.

I made it very clear to him and the other developers that the members of our community play a lot of MM and against the CPU and he does know that MM needs to be updated. They want to do this next year. Also try to remember this is his first year on the game. Don't misconstrue that as an excuse because when I mentioned many of the issues that we had with the game last year he completely agreed. He just stated that they wanted to get the gameplay finished first. MM is a huge mode in the game that can't just be fixed with a tweak here and there.

Last thing for tonight that I wanted to mention was about the fouls. Let me just say that they are probably tired of hearing me ask about it.

Not only has the collision system been totally overhauled for the better, so to has the referee system.

I spoke with gameplay producer Aaron McCarty about the lack of free kicks/set pieces in the game because of the lack of fouls. He assured me that you will see more fouls called in the final version. I saw a minimal number of fouls in the games I played today. I will bring it up again tomorrow to try to get more info.

Well, a lot of positive news except for the manager mode of course.

Re: FIFA 09 Discussion Thread

Sounds superb shame no manager mode improvements but everywhere else sounds sweet cant wait. :))
