FC Barcelona Thread

barcelona being the team with less penalties awarded in La Liga the last seasons..

The numbers are there and it's a little odd considering barcelona spends more time with the ball on the opponent area than practically any other team. At least you should concede that there is something really fishy in the fact we practically aren't awarded penalties of late.

As a matter of fact, in a madrid newspaper there was the data the other day that Real Msdrid has been awarded more penalties every season in the last 28 years...

Yes that I do find strange.

Harsh? Why? Just to understand it, because in my book it's quite clear. Miguel doesn't have any chance to play the ball and jumps on Messi from behind, not touching the ball and sacking Messi to the floor.

Is people watching the same play I do, at 10:00?

Pathetic the Spanish Federation, again. Mourinho banned for only two matches, and practically none considering it's suspended only for the Spanish Supercup.

I'm quite sure if this had happened in the Premier League and Mourinho did an agression like that to another coach the ban would have been fair, and at least a month away of the bench, in ANY english competition.

That shows how corrupt are the Spanish institutions and how Madrid has little to moan about.

They are promoting violence by not banning him properly and some day we will suffer the consequences of this decisions.

Just to compare, a similar aggression happened in the Rugby World Cup. 48 hours later, the player was banned with 15 matches.

don't worry, in next "clasico" guardiola kicking the mourinho ass, again.

federation, referees, Tv...nothing help we..

Alex, i'm reading Ronald Reng's book about Robert Enke at the moment.
I 'd completely forgotten the fact that he once played (barely 3 matches) for Barcelona.

Enke wasn't treated very nice in Barcelona, especially not by Van Gaal and Frank De Boer (who comes across as a big asshole), also not by the club (Barca's board at the time never had the guts to tell Enke he had to leave...they just left him home for a pre-season training camp).

But...

Reng has interviewed Victor Valdes and he seems a very, very nice and fair guy. He was a young GK at the time Enke was at the club. And while they never talked much to each other, he admired Enke a lot, thought Enke should have had a fair chance and should have been the number one GK at the time...had the grace to tell that Enke was a much better GK than the first GK at the time. And who was that (not all the time)? Victor Valdes...i've changed completely about him since reading the book.

PS: the book is perhaps the best football book i've ever read...fantastic read.

Yes gerd, enke just was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Being keeper of barcelona has always been so difficult. Too much pressure. And van gaal was probably the worst kind of personality to deal with Enke. I remember him clearly, with light blue shirt, in a match in wich he played quite well, but then he had one or two blatant errors and the media went for him. It's sad how the media have so much power, specially in Spain.

I always try to defend Valdes. He has had some errors and in the pitch sometimes he is too energic, but he isnt at all an arrogant person, he is actually very very humble. He's the keeper with more matches and titles of Barcelona, probably the best keeper we've always had, and he's still young. He is always underrated and he's been key in a lot of matches, and probably the best keeper in 1vs1 as I can remember. And despite this, out of the pitch he always talks well, polite with everybody, never did a sounding statement, never misbehaving and always respecting the opponents.

I happen to have met himon several occasions (a friend of mine works in BarcaTV) and he's just a great guy to talk to, and surely he is very different of the image most people have of him.

On the other side, it's Xavi the one who is cocky and feels more like a "divo", while people tend to think opposite of him. I guess it's down to public image vs the real person...

MESSI DON'T STOP!!!!!

Yet another clear penalty to Messi that the ref decided to ignore... What must happen for us to have a penalty? It's ridiculous...

By the way, 8 homegrown players in the first team and Busquets and Fontas in the bench. One of those days Pep will do a starting 11 based only in homegrown players! That would be historical.

Club Deportivo Guadalajara " Chivas" is a club that uses home grown players only! most of them from the same city. Only 3 players are known in Europe Chicharito , Carlos Vela n Salcido.

To think they only use what they produce . Like a farmer getting his own milk, eggs, veggies and steak from his back yard :)) .Barca has the formula to do it. I would love it to happen EVERYWHERE !

Yes, I knew about Chivas! It's a great club and fans are very proud of it. Bilbao tends to be a club based on homegrown players, and they won't sign any foreigner.

The definition of "foreigner" has changed a little over the years so they can grab people from Navarra or other regions, but anyway Bilbao is one of the clubs I admire the most for what they do and ho wthey do it (still no advertising on the shirt, that's remarkable!).

Besides, homegrown players really feel the shirt and have more empathy with fans. I'm sure that most clubs in La Liga would play much better if instead of signing people let their youngsters arrive to the first team. There's a lot of wasted talent there.

I was thinking you were going to nail me to the wall with the formula bit. See it like this only the pure stays and others will return it they live up to it. There's always Blackburn :P

I admire Bilbao too! (which is weird considering I'm a Madrid supporter, I think it's because of FM I like them!) Anyway, I respect and back their Basque policy, it's kinda unique these days. They haven't the success they had in the past but they are still a good and dangerous team. Nonetheless, when you look back at Real Sociedad's recent history, then you realise Bilbao have probably chosen the right way to be in football. :))

Don't forget they are sponsored by Petronor Alexis.

As what concerns to your last point, I just don't agree with one thing. Homegrown players tend to have a different sense of commitment with the club but, unfortunately, there are some exceptions. By the top of my head, João Moutinho. Being a Sporting player since his childhood he revealed his greediness handing a transfer request to FC Porto. So, all said, homegrown players can be the most loved and the most hated (like LeBron James for example ).

Btw guys did you know Messi is already tied for first spot with Raul for most Knock-out phase goals in Champions League, 18!

39 goals total so far, Raul got 71.. i figured it will take Messi around 3-4 years to break that record... If Messi ever gets World Cup with Argentina he will surpass Pele and Maradona as best player EVER WITHOUT ANY DOUBT!

Well at least then everyone will be silenced, for me its enough to see him in Barcelona.. Going next spring to Barcelona again to see him live :)

Yes Enzo, watching this fella play is like watching Pele or Maradona at their best... every week. And even twice a week. It's got to a point that people on the stadium expect him to score AND assist every match, and silence of expectation can be felt whenever and wherever he takes the ball.

He will be amongst the best scorers ever and he plays as a midfielder, not a striker... Point is, theother day there were statistics showing he's also the best assister ever in terms of assists per game in the last 3 seasons...

I won't put any adjective to Messi, because this guys is far beyond adjectives or general vocabulary. No words to describe him, that's why everybody should watch him play live at least once in their lifetime!

Plus, coming to Barcelona you can also enjoy the city! Enzo, if you need any info, ask me!

Ive been in Barcelona 3 times, its amazing city and amazing country! Im still to visit Camp nou, i have no idea how i f*cked up that :FAIL:

We have a friend at Plaça de Lesseps we usually visit him when we come to Barcelona, might be that he isnt around so I will remember your kindness and offer, thank you!

Messi is Maradona of 21 century

I went to Barcelona for my stag. I loved it there but I have to say, after midnight, Las Ramblas is a very seedy place. Prostitutes everywhere! If you are into that sort of thing then you will love it even more but I'd never pay for a five knuckle shuffle! Thieving bastards too! They rub you up for you to take your hand out your pockets so they can then pickpocket you... I took the free rub lol. My mate got pickpocketed, realised straight away and had her by the throat until she gave his wallet back! This lad is into paying for it though so he "gave" the money to one of her mates later anyway!!

Only sightseeing I was interested in though was the pubs and Camp Nou. Amazing stadium. Shame they drew with Betis 1-1. Prob cost Barca the league that year. Also a shame that some of the top players disappointed on the night. Messi just went sideways all game with none of his magic runs or anything interesting. Ronaldinho scored the penalty but apart from that he was dreadful! Xavi was Xavi. Never gave the ball away and just oozes class. Best player on the pitch by a mile Eto'o. He was absolute quality. This waw 4 1/2 years ago and Barca were good then but god I'd love to watch them play live again now... and have a few bevvies afterwards to relive good times.

Yeah Las Ramblas is famous for its pickpockets! Apparently some of the best in the world are there!

You have to be very careful. I was there last January and me and my gf never had a problem but I've heard some bad stories and we had been properly 'warned' so we were careful.

Beautiful place though. Coastal city. Very touristy! Good night life. Lovely place! Unfortunately I didn't get to go the stadium or see any matches but I did get to see the city!

Yes, las ramblas is not a nice place to be at night, but there are lots of things to see and do. And lots of places to visit other than the stadium! I remember that betis match, it costed us the league indeed! But messi then wad just 18, and still had to explode.

Barcelona is a great place to live, due to the weather, the food having beaches and mountains equally near. Pickpockets have appeared due to the mass tourism of the last years. 9 million tourists each year, and not enough policemen due to the crisis. A bad thing, bit if you are warned and aware, there's nothing to fear at all.

I think Kanoute did well to disturb the penalty and lash out at Cesc . It caused Messi to hesitate, although credit to the keeper he play out of his skin . At first , I couldn`t tell what had happen I thought Barca players were bad at rushing/surrounding the refs , but Sevilla went in pairs to surround every ref in the stadium

I heard Cesc said "you were better at Tottenham" :P old derby boiling point.

What a pitty, we deserved much better against a Sevilla that simply defended with 10 mene all the match. They had 2 chances in the first half and that's all they did, although they defended superbly.

Probably the worst Messi match in almost 2 years, and the first time we don't score at home in a looong time. Vara was spectacular and saved 4 goals.

Barcelona didn't play a great match, but did a good match overall and if it had ended 2 or 3 - 0 nobody would have been surprised. A pitty we didn't finish our chances, something that happens now and then. Tuesday we should have scored at least 5 goals against Viktoria Plzen and yesterday some more against Sevilla. Maybe it's time we try a more direct approach on goal in the last 20 meters!

By the way, our first penalty in 6 months! And we missed it... Ouch!

We were all right at the top of the stadium. Cracking view even that far up. One of the boys rolled up one of the free mags handed out and made a paper airplane. It flew for gaes and landed on the pitch. The ref stopped the game to remove it :) It's not that funny but we laughed anyway.
It is a lovely city. The Formula 1 was there on the same weekend and they were showing the cars off down by the harbour. Damn they are loud. Some of the lads wanted to go and see The Cathedral. I said we are on a stag! My stag!! And I want us in the pub!!! :) I said stick your head out of the window of our apartment, look right, see that tall building down there? That's the cathedral! Now get dressed and get out on the pop!!! :)
Ended up in The Casino down by the harbour one night. Surprised they let us in as we'd been on the lash for 26 hours already as we started 6am the previous day. Leaving the casino out the back door, some of the cars there were amazing! Ferraris, Porsches etc. Beautiful machinery. There were loads of Chinamen sleeping in the casino which was quite funny.

Had a great time there. I've been on better stag places but it was still amazing to finally go there and to the stadium as I've followed Barca for almost 30 years since my late Uncle brought me a kit home for his holiday. That's another reason we went to Barcelona. It was in Memory of him.

Anyway, shame about the draw this weekend so back on topic... :)

Worst match in a lot of time. Players look tired and they continue to waste so many chances. It should have been a 0-3 easily. Patience. The team dominated and it's only a bit of freshness that we are missing.

How awesome is Cesc admitting he didn't deserve to be in the Ballon D'Or list? These award lists are a joke and now the players are acknowledging it.
