English Premier League thread

Exactly, on Saturday it was Rafa out, now it's Rafa in. He'll never be manager there next season.

Di Canio...just wow. If nothing else he'll bring some fire to Sunderland, maybe the owner thought that was all they needed to avoid relegation.

QPR currently down 3-1 to Fulham...big half to come. QPR desperately need a comeback if they've any hope.

And now a terrible decision for a red card. Sidwell absolutely pulled out of that. Looked like it was going to be a bad tackle, but in fact wasn't. Poor officating.

But, it does mean this game has everything! Goals, penalties, red cards, blunders, now just a late winner...

Sorry - to be clear it was probably a second yellow and hence red, but the ref gave a straight red.

It surely is. No team on earth would be insane and unethical enough to engage a fascist.

I had the same reaction. But i heard James Richardson about Di Canio. It seems Di Canio is not as black and white as we see him. See my reaction in the Italian football thread.

It seems that Italian people have come tot terms with their WWII past in a better way than most German people. It seems as if Italians can discuss Mussolini in a rather objective way: it's obvious that he has done an awfull lot of things wrong, but they also see the positive things about him...I'm no specialist about this, but the truth is never black and white.

It also seems that Di Canio had a very good record with his previous club. During his time at Swindon only Ferguson had more win than he had as a manager in the football league and the EPL. So maybe i was wrong to call him unproven. I'm not sure if the players will take to him because he seems a very confrontational manager to me...

And Martin O' Neill (who i always rated high as a manager) seemed pretty clueless and desperate wit hSunderland this season...

Personally, I don't see what all of the fuss is around.

Di Canio isn't overtly expressing his politics is he? He won't go and sack all of Sunderland's black players now will he?

"Sunderland City Council's deputy leader, Councillor Henry Trueman, called for Di Canio to "leave his politics aside" during his time at the club.

"Everyone has political views but extremism is the last thing we need in football," he said."

Some interesting things said in here. But I think this statement is ridiculous. To label him as an extremist is a bit bonkers? Am I the only one seeing that? I consider myself pretty left wing(politically) and I just think it's sad when a person's political views are brought into question for no reason. There are many Italians who still hold far right views (I presume) but as far as I'm aware the view aren't put into practice.

All that aside, if he succeeds here and keeps Sunderland up I think everyone will be a lot more comfortable that he has a history of accepting Fascist views.

He only has himself to blame, he was stupid enough to do a fascist salute (Twice I think?) when everybody could see him, he has to live with the ramifications of that, full stop.

That salute is reportedly traditional with Lazio fans, unless I'm wrong?

Also, if you scroll towards the bottom of this article, there is a tweet of a direct quote from his autobiography, I think it sums up his views.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion on this, I just think there is a big negative knee-jerk reaction going on.

Because the ultra fans do it, it is ok for him to do it? He knows fully well what it represents to do it, he isn't stupid. There is no justifying it imo. He did it he has to live with the consequences of doing it.

It's not really a knee Jerk reaction, people have been saying it about him for years, just he is now managing a premier league club, so it becomes more newsworthy.

Everybody has to live with the consequences of their actions.

Lazio fans are racist all know that , every match they got banners and racist songs , in Italy I think they are most racist fans!

Di Canio its same , all know this and I won't be surprise by any scandal if he does at Sunderland ! but still he got much energy and can put some fire on players and make them try more and finish out of last 3 !

anyway I think its really interesting , seems more like comercial move to premier league , it will make more interesting and more curious as many people are to see him at EPL !

I think he will give them a kick up the arse and it could be exactly what they need. Although even if he gets them out of the rut and keeps them in the Prem I can't see him being that successful with them afterwards.

O'Neill was good at Aston Villa, results wise, but he is a very overrated manager. And he has his teams playing the one of the dullest, turgid and unattractive styles of football I've seen.

Having said that, he has the experience to keep a team like Sunderland at the Prem. I doubt he would get relegated. But now with Di Canio, I'd put my money on Sunderland going down. Wigan must be happy.

O'Neil was also splendid with Celtic IMO and at times his Villa team played very good and exciting football.

I agree to Bobby's posts, he's only being called a neo-fascist, because he acted like one and praised Nazis and reportedly admitted that he's one(in an interview with German football magazin 4-4-2 in the December 06 magazin on pages 110ff if anyone wants to look it up).

Dunno about that, it was generally a very basic and direct way of playing with two wingers off a target man.

Dear footballing higher power: please please please let Stoke be relegated. The footballing world will thank you and worship you forever.

I just really dislike Pulis' Stoke approach to football. They foul more than any other team, the ball is in play for less time than any other team and every season they injure someone important with their 'robust' style of play.

Watching them is like pulling teeth, and they've even lost the one moment of excitement which was their long throw ins. Plus Pulis is really unlikeable, and talks about Refs whenever he can.

wigan always stay up, they just fuck about for 3/4 of season then they decide to start performing. i actually want stoke to stay up cos they annoy all the funboy teams. their style is shit but they do what they do to survive. queer power rangers are probably already down with samba's £100k a week contract...

I don't think I'd mind Stoke playing the way they do if Tony Pulis wasn't such a prick.

I agree with that.
I hope both Wigan and Villa say up.
If i had to choose between those two then Villa should stay up (and this has nothing to do with Benteke, he will be gone anyway next season, but i like Lambert and his approach where he plays youngsters).

That Lowton goal was exceptional, but my goal of the season will always be a team effort...some good passing and then a goal.

The best goal i might ever have seen was a Lokeren goal with tremendous passing and a finish similarly like that of Lowton (not as good, but the whole move was fantastic, just google Lokeren-Standard, the goal was scored by a South African player, can't remember his name).

I agree with you there, to a certain extent.

I prefer Martinez's approach to playing football over Lambert's, but if Wigan were to go down I'm sure that Martinez could easily get another job for a Premier League team and would bring that approach back.

Overall, I'd much prefer if Stoke or perhaps Norwich slid down the table and were relegated. Simply because I don't like how they play.

Remys goal was a class finish (if qpr keep most these players they should walk the championship) and wtf bobby doing kicking gomez in head?? when qpr went 10 men it looked like it helped them more than it helped wigan. wigan just started playin at like turtle speed and when qpr scored they decided to give a fuck...
