eFootball PES 2020 Discussion Thread (PS4/Xbox One)

What do you guys reckon??

Sorry, couldn't resist! :D

It's identical for me. I don't use gameplay mods any more because nothing has ever beaten DP4 or DP5 with mods, that was the best it ever got for me and since then I've found each DP and each mod doesn't come close. Other than v1.0 perhaps, which I refuse to go back to because I don't want to play with the unlicensed squads etc., can't bring myself to do it.

In terms of defending, what you speak of - it being easier to dispossess the opponent by just holding X - for me, that would be a really bad thing... I'd rather be punished for doing that, and concede a ton of fouls for not positioning properly and double-tapping X. But I'm not feeling any change here (still winning the ball and conceding very few fouls in the process).

I'm not saying it definitely is or isn't different - I don't play the game often enough to say for certain. But in my opinion, there is no difference. I imagine all effort is going into the 20/21 Season Update gameplay changes right now!

Just had a blast with another 5 or so games (on pc again, mainly because of the evopatch, plus endo turfs, nesa's cam mods and hawke's balls - just makes this too good). Yeah its really good. Still on Top Player... Things just seem more varied, and im seeing new animations as well. The opposition attacking AI is shooting more from distance if you dont close them down quick enough, and im seeing new types of attacks with mid-raised through balls that i havent witnessed before (previous versions).

Also..and this is probably the biggest noticeable (positive) change ive seen in the game, .. its noticeably easier to dispossess the opposition (sometimes leads to foul) with 'x' - whereas before, it seemed my defenders were just so unresponsive and when i went in for a tackle (x variety, non sliding), the ai would just get by me too easily. So its easier to dispossess if you are at their feet, and as mentioned before, easier to close down and actually intercept passes.. which for me is so much more realistic than how it was before. The cpu would often just ping the ball around and would be super hard to dispossess particularly if you were 1-0 up etc. I attributed this to scripting...
Bottom line: its more realistic as its now easier to defend, which ive always thought was important for good realistic gameplay (it should always be easier to defend, than to attack). What do you guys reckon??... Definitely makes the game looser and/or scrappier.. but in a good way. Also, i do think there has been a slight improvement to the weight of this game (referring to how the players move and feel on the ball, and how it feels passing ball grounded and through the air) - best its ever been i reckon. Anyways, just as i was getting used to dp7.0 and enjoying it, i must say... This version is just another step up.. they havent fked anything up, and have actually improved the defence part of things which i think was much needed. Hoping to find new things over the next week...
🙄 Okay?

Did they even mention any gameplay changes?
I dont think they always do mention the gameplay changes. But its quite obvious changes have been made.. and in fact it seems every datapack this year has come with a change in gameplay. Its always different. This one was particularly noticeable, as ive been kinda addicted to playing pes2020(pc) of late, doing about an hour or more a day for the last month, so after playing today's update, it was very noticeable - feels new and fresh to me..considering the changes that were made (mentioned in my previous post). Definitely not placebo.. Surely others are noticing changes???? anyone??

A new Update File (Data Pack 8.00 & Patch 1.08.00) was released on 25/06/2020.
See below for details.

haha, i have to say i just watched that Mourinho clip about 10 times just then.. amazing how funny it is.. and so little is said.. lol.. so dont say sorry.. im thanking you for that Chris lol.. good stuff really :)

anyways re the dp8... yeah i usually dont notice differences unless they are major.. i do remember dp5 and how it was a decent backstep. I think you have to be playing it very regularly to notice the differences.. so as mentioned, ive been playing dp7 heaps this month.. probably more than i ever have.. mainly due to the pc patching/mods making the game that much more enjoyable (not gameplay patches though.. just all cosmetic), and so when i started dp8 this arvo, there was a noticeable impact what what i saw and felt. I guess if nobody responds with similar observations, i could just be crazy... and attribute it to whats going on in the world atm.

no mention of the "minor gameplay fixes to make it a better experience" or whatever they usually put down for that general gameplay comment???

@aussiepesfan
I had 2 matches so far: Norwich vs Chelsea and Norwich vs Barca. Both felt different with DP8.
As you said, a lot of humanized mistakes when passing by the AI. I like that together with closing passing lanes and being rewarded for it.
The AI was easy to get off the ball and I don’t think it’s easier it’s just the player physics work a little different. Players collide and bump off each other differently.
Saw Messi being Messi a bit more (Griezman as well) but need to play more matches.

It seems a tad slower in speed so I’m good with +1 for now. 0 feels a bit to slow somehow.

Played superstar, 20 minutes, fuma, on PS4, no mods. :)

Played 2 matches. First was against Genk away on top player. Then Liverpool on professional. Both games were a complete mess. I didn't even finish the match against Liverpool as the ref was fine with Keita and the gang's constant attempts to break my legs. They succeeded. I went off injured and turned off the game.

When you're not having fun when you're winning, it's time to do something else. Same reason I stopped playing league of legends.

I don't know what's going to happen with 2021 whether it'll be a full release or an update but, in regards to the BAL experience, the game needs fundamental and significant changes to core elements before it can be redeemed. The kind of change that doesn't come in a patch or a yearly update.

So what I'm going to do now is take a break. When the itch to play a football game returns, I'll continue my BAL save in PES 2017 that I've put 8 seasons into. I re-signed with Atletico after a 3 year stint at Barcelona. Me and team USA are finally good enough to maybe win a world cup now (that's the only nice thing about the regen system).

And when I'm done with that save, I'll start a new one on PC. Doing what I've been doing on 2020; playing out a career with my favorite club at United.

2020 isn't fun. At least not for the experience that I want from it. I can't be spending so much of my time trying to figure out a way to make it fun.

Sad to see every player/team condition set back to C with this update
:(

Almost 3 months later:

Seems like this weekend it's going to be Zenit time
:...

Game has deffo changed.

It ain't placebo before people start. I'm 5 seasons into a ML save on superstar. I play a good couple of hours per evening.

The ball is 'looser', seeing more richochets and bounces in certain situations. The AI are making more misplaced passes, just seen 3 in one half v Bologna.

I've also witnessed the best save I've ever seen on a computer game. The Milan Derby v Inter, Icardi gets it in the box. I think he's gonna take another touch but he hits a early strike. Donnarumma flicks out a palm and tips it over the bar, it was superb.

Like I said, I've played this game a lot, and this update has put the game, for me, in a very good place, great stuff.

Played 3 games with Atletico Bilbao. Some quick observations:
  • Reactions of players and keepers(!) much better
  • More precision to shooting and passing
  • Collision model seems preciser
  • Defenders seem smarter, less headless chicken runs
  • Players are better at shielding again without it being over powered, seems like a good balance
  • You can actually receive a ball in the box and continue play, AI defenders less overpowered in the box
  • Passing a bit slower
  • Dribbling more responsive, feels much more intuitive
Of all builds this reminds me the most of the demo but with AI that is more capable to deal with the ball physics and a more finetuned referee; actually got a penalty in my second match but that might be a coincedence.

Overall game feels less predictable, more polished and fun. You have to be more precise and thoughfull again on a micro level yet i find it rewards opportunistic, fast attacks still a bit too much compared to a more conservative strategy and picking your moment. The added freedom due to the responsiveness and explosiveness of the players is counterbalanced by a bit more physicality and closer marking but i think they can make it even a bit more physical and maybe reduce sprinting power just ever so slightly to keep the balance.

Smarter marking on midfield might help as well to make it even less end to end. CPU does take more time for attacks because my defenders position is better so they try more different strategies, more short passes. Midfield is overall slightly more prominent it seems but not by much and its easy to skip compared to 2017 for example. All in all room for improvement ofcourse but definately a huge step in the right direction.

After 3 games I can't say it feels any different beyond the usual incoherence on a game to game basis, i.e. some games will feel slow and congested, others fast and end to end...

I certainly didn't notice may players being positioned better and/or more alert to passes going right by them, but perhaps the AI makes a bit less precise passes towards the end of matches.

Just my 2 cents on this update...

Btw I'm playing as Southampton in league mode on PA1, Top Player.

Tried the new update. You can clearly see the subtle differences but...konami really are going round in circles with this game. One patch adds x, the next replaces x with y, the following patch replaces both with x(2). Meanwhile, there are no meaningful physics, stats mean very little, and there is zero granularity to the game. Everything is binary. It's all yes or no gameplay.

Youd think konami know this as they're writing 2021 off. 2022 must be built from the ground up and has to blow minds. If it's another pes 2011 / 2014 budget overhaul, then its hard to see how there's any hope for this game.

It's so stale and limited. I was a cheerleader in september/october but even playing the slightly wonky fifa 20 shows just how basic this game is. There is zero room for self-expression in this game. It's like playing with a calculator which can only add or subtract. You cannot make a decision to try a certain type of shot, or choose the power or angle of it. It's just automation everywhere.

My suspicion is konami knows this so they've tried to buy time by making the game appear to be real, by making it look and move like it's real, knowing theres virtually nothing behind the scenes.

Honestly I'm jealous of people who are able to get consistent enjoyment from this game. But I've said before, I'm sure my experience would be a very different one if I wasn't exclusively fixed cursor.

This has been simultaneously the best and worst PES I've ever played. I think the way the game works makes it objectively the best football game I've ever played. But it's because of that that it's also the worst. And it's because of one reason; the AI.

Frequently the AI will do things and attempt moves that would work in previous games but don't work in this one given how important body positioning is to passing and shooting. Routinely they do things no footballer would ever do and it drove me insane.

When you're controlling everyone, you can curb some of those awful tendencies more frequently. But I'm at the mercy of an AI that clearly was not intended to be utilized in this form.

So that honestly leaves me thinking, if this gameplay experience is so far down the priority list they are better off removing it entirely and saving those resources and time for something they are more focused on.

i gave it a couple of matches till late last night... even when i see some things changed with DP8, and thats for the good, the greater picture aint much better/different, imo.
STILL, and this is my main gripe, the AI isnt varied enough when attacking. i dont wanna talk about variety in AI defending as this is non existing to me.

When i said Messi being more Messi after DP8, i must have been lucky seeing him doing a fency trick or two. but its not nearly as 2017 Messi (hence the AI)! and boy, Barca subbed in Ronaldinho last night (2017 Ronaldinho!!) and he was dancing on the sideline beating one after another... IT WAS A BEAUTY! you have to love that even when they trash your SB's while moving forward. :D

one sentence i created in my head last night, after i gave it one last match (Burnley vs. Barca) in 2017 before going to bed (you know, i can sleep better if i go to bed in a good mood ;) ), is:
the 2017 AI at least is able to react to the gameplay I put in front of their noses!
they do react more accordingly to what is happening, and more important, more in a football-ish way!! a more varied one (i never really know what they'll do, there is more instinct to what they are able to do).
and that AI behaviour, besides all the flasws 2017 has, is bringing the fun part into my game! and fun is what i want from playing games.
its not perfect, but it delivers football aspects the best on PS4, imo! it could be my personal preference but the core of football is the shape of a team, playing the positions as best as they can plus having an idea on how to work/beat your opponent.

Had another go. It's a fool who does the same thing ten times and expects a different result each time (and that fool is me).

I've got a Leeds save where I've replayed the same game about ten times, with different DPs. Specifically, a cup game against Luton (and I know AI is different in the cup, so I play a league game after).

Tried again. Half time, Luton have 98% pass completion. Before half time, they hit the ball four times from defender to striker. With the pinpoint accuracy of a David Beckham cross.

Nah. I could rant, rave, ask how anyone can swallow this in 2020. But I won't. I'll just uninstall it, now it's been confirmed that DP8 is the last one (not sure if that's been discussed).

See you next year for another go on the merry-go-round of insanity.

Agreed - I'll still occasionally play PES2020 over the coming year because the good stuff is really good. But the bad stuff is so omnipotent, it's there every match, that I'm rarely able to play more than one match in any session before the irritation gets too much and I turn it off. It's a game that always leaves me feeling angry.

Fixed cursor is a disaster, as it was in 19. I do wonder if they're going to delete it altogether, which would be a shame.

Exactly how I feel - they may have tweaked a few bits for the better but the overwhelming problems are still there and for me, overshadow the good stuff. It doesn't matter how good they make the good stuff, they needed to fix the bad stuff....and they never did.

Before half time, they hit the ball four times from defender to striker. With the pinpoint accuracy of a David Beckham cross.

Exactly my experience - first match was some Euro match against Azerbijan - they spammed the defender-to-sole-attacker ball about 7 or 8 times (with 100% accuracy) in the first half before I quit, utterly bored.

I think I notice subtle differences, I think, but nothing major. I think.

But I feel I've finally made peace with the game. I can still take enjoyment from it if I get myself in the right frame of mind and not get consumed by all the things that could relegate it to a snazzy coaster. If I play the game it is and not the game I want it to be, I'm in a much better place. The issue is, I think it's very close to being the game I want it to be and it teases me.

I take the retro titles I cherish on face value and try to apply the same to 2020. But every time I get annoyed with it, PES2 has a ready-to-eat excuse of being 18 years old. There's a lot to like about 2020, but I shouldn't have to work so hard to find it among all the crap that is unbecoming of a football title in this day and age. Infinite respect to those who do - I wish I had your patience!

I played PES 2020 pretty heavily at launch then didn't really touch the game for almost 7 months... So after racking up 10-15 hours or so of game time in the last 2 weeks I'm really enjoying it after a pretty long break.

Scored some really nice goals, had some really tight games, been absolutely battered a few times and overall it's been really fun to play again - also see they added Wembley Stadium which was cool to play at! The only thing I really miss from PES 2017 is the tighter dribbling controls, felt like you could just weave round players in that game with clever and quick directional movement.

I feel like outside the box the refs are quite good - but I cannot buy a penalty or give one away to save my life. I use the double tap 'x' tackle quite a lot (partly because the animation when pulling someone down from behind is so good) but if you use that in the box there's a safe chance you're going to trip someone. I've definitely done some pretty questionable tackles in the box and still no penalty, or on the reverse, I've been completely floored by the AI in the box and the ref just isn't interested!

I thought this forum is the place to be for fools like you. And me. And all the other ones here. :BOUNCE:

Gave it a go as well last night, but I didn't even make it to play a single half. Started an exhibition match, ai hacked me down in the penalty box after 10 minutes or so and the only whistle I heard was in my head. Turned it off then.

Same here. Couldnt stomach it for 5 minutes. Dire

Slightly offtopic: I was searching why Konami doesn't give a PES for Switch. I strongly believe that N-Switch could carry very well the pes mobile game, with unreal engine, like EA offers a fifa legacy edition and since pesmoblie UE runs on mobile phones.
So I found an interview that I will give in a link below, which generates these facts.

Fact1: Someone asked yesterday, who is the current brand manager. His name is Lennart Bonzein.

Fact2: I am not sure which PES he had in mind, 2019 or 2020, but in the time the interview was posted, 28 Aug. 2019, he said: "This year we’ve added so much into the game. We’ve added a huge amount of new licences, Master League is now in Year 2 and has loads of cool and nice additions, we added MatchDay which is a complete new mode."

So last August ML was in year 2, of the 3 years cycle I assume. Whatever does this mean!

Fact3: In the question about PES on Switch, he totally avoided to answer, saying only some general faffery, that they produced Bomberman and Contra for Switch. So if anyone from pes productions reads this, I give you free idea. Take the pes mobile code, port it straight to Switch, making the appropriate optimization and just add the rest game modes, MyClub is already in mobile.

Worst team I played recently was Panama. Not a single player higher than 68 overall. They pinged it around like they had spent 3 months at a Guardiola youth camp. And this was on professional.

Nah. I could rant

Mate don't worry I will rant for you lmao

See you next year for another go on the merry-go-round of insanity.

Yup. It's so bad specifically because you can see how good it could be.

Have they fixed stupid stuff like not being able to receive a pass or just see the ball roll past you?
(For reference watch TTB's review of data pack 8)

It's about time to take this game behind the barn and shoot it.

I'm not even bothered to start it up and get pissed off after about 30 konami minutes in to the first half seeing garbage move from both the ai and my own AI/controlled players.
Enough!
