EA SPORTS FC 27

I tried playing a match on Competitive with sliders similar to Authentic and custom AI. What a difference. It was not "realistic" but I had so much more fun! You can tweak the AI to be so much more like another human player so at least the game was different to the drab boring crap you get with Authentic and default "Tactical" or "Dynamic". And because you remove the "Authentic tweaks", the ball is not lost at every challenge made by an opposition and the AI cannot press all the time.

I fixed the defenders of both teams by using a lowered line height and line width.

Authentic is a sham lads. It is just a bad gameplay mod on top of crap. Thankfully, they've added a lot of sliders which can do quite a bit, especially for you guys on the consoles, there could be fun to be had here. Maybe?

Edit: I wanted to also say. I cannot understand why Authentic mode comes with a preset of sliders. It makes no sense. Authentic runs in its own folder in the game files but they still use sliders. It is a layer -> layer -> competitive design. Not the way to do things at all IMO.
Can you explain how you change the slides in competitive mode? It's greyed out for me...

It's not the highest difficulty level. Players are supposed to make mistakes on lower difficulties so people can actually score goals once in a while when they're learning how to play the game.

Well, I don't think “World Class” is the difficulty level you'd start with when you're just learning the game...

I've only played 6 or 7 games in the trial so far, and aside from that extreme example, it somehow always comes down to getting through the midfield with 2–3 passes and after a through ball you're in a 1-on-1 with the goalie.

Same, but the "successful" way to play (vs the AI) has been the same in every single FC - I don't try to play something resembling football because it's of no gameplay benefit to e.g. hold onto the ball. Just wait for a counter, go from WB to CM, trigger a run, through-ball it to them and score the 1-on-1.

So much so, when I play an older FIFA or PES, I go through a period of frustration as I try to essentially cheese my way forward and find that the laser-accurate long-distance passing I'm trying to pull off doesn't work. My initial response is "how was that intercepted?!" before going "oh yeah, because I was being dumb".

FC feels more like a third-person shooter that's had a football game modded into it, with how the ball doesn't react correctly to any contact but instead magically moves to where it's supposed to be. (And I know that's a bitchy thing to say but it's honestly how it feels to play, to me.)

is it something you will share? Based on your experience I think many would love to try it.

You not tried the sliders yet? I am using one, it's a crazy mish mash of different people, but you definately cannot get through midfield easily, and 1v1's are super rare.

Can you describe in what ways you think the career mode is brilliant?
I mean, just look at the feature list basically. As much as I've only tested it briefly because the gameplay is so poor, I only saw great things.

Dynamic OVR makes every save different, making it so you have to play players or their ability will decline (and it applies to the AI too - so sometimes you'll see youth players explode out of nowhere who don't reach their potential in any other save). Fatigue is actually a thing this year, meaning squad rotation is a must (unbelievably there are complaints about this on Twitter and I REALLY hope they don't change it, because they've already added a toggle to make this easier if you want). Transfers are more streamlined, deals can be hijacked, the logic (in my experience) was sound...

Morale is less easily "gamed" - you can't just pick the right press conference answers and boost all of your player attributes by simply insane amounts. It helps that press conferences have been reduced in frequency too. Plus there's the changes to how coaches work, which plays into this over-arching focus of making it far harder to give your first team huge boosts and make the game too easy. The Career Mode team are clearly passionate about their own product, IMO - I just don't see any of that passion in the gameplay, which is 0% fun for me personally due to how plastic everything feels.

One of the only things I don't like are the "random events". Yes they're based on real-life stories, but a player out for six weeks because they "dropped a suitcase on their foot" because this happened in real life one time is stupendously immersion-killing when - if implemented more sensibly - it could be a cool, dynamic system that makes every save unique. But this was added last year. It can also be turned off, which I hate to do because it removes an element of risk that it's nice to have... so I personally leave it on and just imagine a more realistic alternative, e.g. whenever one of the sillier "injuries" happens, I imagine that they simply picked up an injury during training.

It's not Football Manager (and sadly I don't think the devs want it to be, which I would love, but I get why they want something more accessible whilst being full of its own challenges) - and it's not quite LMA Manager (there are a few buggy player interactions that don't make sense, and the fun - but unrealistic - bits like choosing sponsors and building stadiums are missing) - but it's the best career mode there's ever been in a football game, I reckon.

By any chance Chris have you tried cpu vs cpu games? Not sure if its even possible, im just wondering if its entertaining, exciting or if its an annoying snooze fest like in most football games and the AI is incompetent. Im just here, havent really got into any modern football game for 6 years now at all, have a PS5 finally so i might buy this if at least the cpu and cpu action is exciting and play a "manager career mode". PS i know FM exists but i suck at that completely and i spend way too much time in the menus and i still feel like i dont spend enough probably in order to succeed.
I haven't sorry, if I wanted to do that I'd just play Football Manager - but knowing how the AI plays against the human player, I can't imagine it would be good.

Yeah of course I have, but it doesn't fix the game, sorry. That's not to be flippant - I know we have very similar opinions on FC generally - but you can't make a game that isn't designed to be a football game into a football game by tweaking its variables.

You can make it more balanced for your personal tastes of course (that's what they're for) but when you play the best football games ever made, FC27 is objectively worse in terms of AI and physics (if you're looking for a realistic football game), so I just can't understand why anyone would (if that stuff matters to them). Other than being desperate to play something new and less predictable, sure, but knowing that every weird player movement, ball movement, FCIQ-forced bad positioning or nonsensical AI decision (e.g. choosing not to shoot in a 1-on-1 situation) etc. is something that wouldn't happen in the pre-Hypermotion games... I just can't enjoy it personally.

Unrelated:

I wanted to start a conversation about the number of button combos in the game now - because I'm a 41-year-old PES player and 100% okay with being told this is a "me" observation and that I need to open my mind up to this being a good thing.

But before I start - I'm coming at this from a realism standpoint, not a complexity one, and I'm interested to know the general thoughts here.

So. I've seen a few social media clips promoting the R3 "speed boost" that's in the game, and also the R2+L1+:triangle: pass, as ways to more easily blast through defences and lift passes away from an interceptable range.

Seeing the difference these combos make (not quite "exploit" level but not far off either):
  • is more control always a good thing (undoubtedly it is for the "1v1 me bro" online players who want no AI "help"),

  • or are the fundamentals being kept basic (or, to exaggerate, kept "broken") when they could provide a much larger range of outputs,

  • and/or does this mean less personality/realism, because the players you control aren't using their mental attributes in the moment to do something with the ball that makes it more likely to be a successful action? (A bit like you being required to shout to your players on Football Manager "lift the pass a bit" instead of them having the eyes and ability to do it themselves.)

I feel like more controls are good on the surface of it, and yet if it means my Tranmere players have a tool that helps them weave through defences and/or hit passes that are harder to intercept as if by magic, it's surely a bad thing. Right? Or... not right? :D

I realize that as I age, I won’t get back the amount of time I’ve spent playing video games. I don’t see this as wasteful - what I do see as wasteful is all the time I have spent trying to make games be something different than what they are. Modders, slider tweakers: I have enormous respect for what you do and I hope this delivers you satisfaction but it only furthers my frustration.

This game was not made for me (or @Chris Davies). No amount of modding or sliders will change that.

I'm the same... I spend hours making the game better, buying mods on Patron, setting up sliders, and when all that's done... Well I don't want to play matches anymore ...

I'm playing FIFA 17 again and the game is so good, the animations are good, the AI adapts, the matches are very varied... How can we, 10 years later, have a game that is as catastrophic as it could have been before? This business world is a disaster.
