ROSICKY CLAIMS CHELSEA CONTACT
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Tomas Rosicky has claimed that Chelsea have been in talks with his agent over a proposed move to England. The highly-rated Czech Republic international told Prague daily newspaper Sport that he has been aware of interest from Claudio Ranieri's side and their Russian billionaire backer Roman Abramovich.
"Yes, it's true. I have known for eight or nine days now of Chelsea's interest," said Rosicky. The 23-year-old joined Dortmund from Sparta Prague for 14.8 million euros (£10.2 million) at the end of 2000 and the financially-troubled Bundesliga outfit would expect considerably more in return with the Euro 2004-bound star under contract until 2008.
Dortmund may be keen to cash in on their brightest star with a much-publicised shortfall in their budget due to the club's failure to make this season's Champions League group stage, after they were downed by Belgium's Club Brugge in the third qualifying round. Having already asked the players to take a voluntary wage cut, Borussia are still likely to yield record losses at the end of the financial year after failing to see a return on their high investment in new players.
A concrete bid for Rosicky would appear to be something the Germans simply could not afford to refuse. "If someone - like in the case of [goalkeeper] Jens Lehmann - wants to leave and the price is right, then we can discuss it," admitted Dortmund business manager Michael Meier.
Rosicky also told Kicker magazine in Germany that he would be prepared to walk away from the club if they failed to qualify for next season's Champions League.
And with the club languishing in sixth position at the midway stage of the season, 14 points behind leaders Werder Bremen, their chances hang in the balance.
