Premier League
- 4 January 2011
The big club bias happens all the time, and to be honest it's becoming a joke.
Over the last two months in the Premier League for example, the bottom clubs have been absolutely shat on by the so called 'elite refs'. I have a big problem with this small pool of elite refs who are supposed to be the best, familiarity breeds contempt and not good refeering in my book.
The refs may come into the league calling it down the line, but the referee's are on an ego trip after a while, and the Sky camera's only inflate the problem. I could name four or five in particular who adore the limelight. Who's to say that the Premier League refs are the best anyway? The refs should all go into a big league pool, and drawn out randomly every week. Manchester United one week, Colchester the next! The 'elite' way has failed once the refs start calling Mr. Rooney Wayne, and Mr Cole Ashley! This first name smooching needs to stop. Their rubbish decisions for the top sides will ultimately cost a manager his job and get his side relegated, and it won't be long before a club takes a pathetically biased refeering performance to court. I'm thinking Ashley Young's recent diving performance, Andy Carroll diving, lots of other top players diving; I'm thinking Shaun Derry not getting his card rescinded etc etc!
The referee and officials last night were fabulous I thought. Drogba perhaps should have had a telling off much earlier for his antics but it's about time the officials started paying close attention to the 'dark arts' of Barcelona too.
As for the entertainment factor someone mentioned in here, as I have said before, I can fully appreciate the way Barcelona play. It is admirable that they play football the ultimate way I suppose. However, it is not for me. I much rather a team have chinks in it's armour, be more direct and fast. Give me Madrid any day of the week for example.

I'm 30 fella, and watch my fair share of games, in most leagues. When I was younger I was always a backer of Barcelona, during the Stoichkov (sp), Figo, Enrique, Laudrup years just to name a few. Back then Barce where the underdogs a lot of the seasons, and Real were the glory boys. Now it's different. I've never liked being a follower of a team that is in the ascendency, that suddenly has a million and one noob followers with Messi on their little replica shirts, so now, for a change I hope Real come out on top. And like I said, I prefer faster, more direct football.
Like someone said here, what you get essentially with a Barcelona game is 70% possession and an endless amount of passing in the opposition half. So yes lol, it is enough to send me to sleep! That's not to say I don't appreciate them as a team or group of individuals. I do however think weak willed refs give into them too easily however.
